Using IODyne: Illustrations and Examples

"IODyne (pronounced ""iodine"") is an Internet client program that allows one to retrieve information from servers by dynamically combining information objects. Information objects are abstract representations of bibliographic data, typically titles (or title keywords), author names, subject and classification identifiers, and full-text search terms. IODyne is being developed as part of a library research project, and so the emphasis on bibliographic data. Quantum Dots in Strong Magnetic Fields: Stability Criteria for the Maximum Density Droplet

In this article we discuss the ground state of a parabolically confined quantum dots in the limit of very strong magnetic fields where the electron system is completely spin-polarized and all electrons are in the lowest Landau level. Without electron-electron interactions the ground state is a single Slater determinant corresponding to a droplet centered on the minimum of the confinement potential and occupying the minimum area allowed by the Pauli exclusion principle. Electron-electron interactions favor droplets of larger area. We derive exact criteria for the stability of the maximum density droplet against edge excitations and against the introduction of holes in the interior of the droplet. The possibility of obtaining exact results in the strong magnetic field is related to important simplifications associated with broken time-reversal symmetry in a strong magnetic field.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures (not included), RevTeX 3.0. An International Perspective on Successful Strategies in Forestry Extension: A Focus on Extensionists

Extensionists throughout the world often share ideas and experiences. Learning what works and what doesn\u27t from practicing Extensionists is a common feature of conferences, symposia, and workshops. In 2003 an international conference of Extensionists held in Troutdale, Oregon, led to a compilation of seven successful strategies related to Extensionists. A follow-up survey of 500 Extensionists from 70 countries revealed that most of these strategies are used often or sometimes, from 53 to 88%. Only one strategy showed significant difference between regions of the world, and this strategy related to Extensionists being members of a professional society or association

Combined Effects of Montmorillonite Clay, Carbon Nanofiber, and Fire Retardant on Mechanical and Flammability Properties of Polyamide 11 Nanocomposites

This paper is focused on the development of polyamide 11 (PA11) nanocomposites with enhanced fire retardant (FR) properties for application in selective laser sintering (SLS). Test specimens of PA11 containing various percentages of intumescent FR additive, montmorillonite (MMT) clay, and carbon nanofiber (CNF) were prepared via the twin screw extrusion technique. The combined effects of MMT clay, CNF, FR additives on the mechanical and flammability properties of these PA11 nanocomposites are studied. Izod impact testing, tensile testing, and SEM analysis of are used to characterize mechanical properties. UL-94 and SEM analysis of char surfaces are used to characterize the flammability properties of these materials. Interlaminar stress analysis of dropped-ply laminated plates and shells by a mixed method

A mixed method of approximation based on Reissner's variational principle is developed for the linear analysis of interlaminar stresses in laminated composites, with special interest in laminates that contain terminated internal plies (dropped-ply laminates). Two models are derived, one for problems of generalized plane deformation and the other for the axisymmetric response of shells of revolution. A layerwise approach is taken in which the stress field is assumed with an explicit dependence on the thickness coordinate in each layer. The dependence of the stress field on the thickness coordinate is determined such that the three-dimensional equilibrium equations are satisfied by the approximation. The solution domain is reduced to one dimension by integration through the thickness. Continuity of tractions and displacements between layers is imposed. The governing two-point boundary value problem is composed of a system of both differential and algebraic equations (DAE's) and their associated boundary conditions. Careful evaluation of the system of DAE's was required to arrive at a form that allowed application of a one-step finite difference approximation. A two-stage Gauss implicit Runge-Kutta finite difference scheme was used for the solution because of its relatively high degree of accuracy. Patch tests of the two models revealed problems with solution accuracy for the axisymmetric model of a cylindrical shell loaded by internal pressure. Parametric studies of dropped-ply laminate characteristics and their influence on the interlaminar stresses were performed using the generalized plane deformation model. Eccentricity of the middle surface of the laminate through the ply drop-off was found to have a minimal effect on the interlaminar stresses under longitudinal compression, transverse tension, and in-plane shear. A second study found the stiffness change across the ply termination to have a much greater influence on the interlaminar stresses
