    Origin and Purpose of Problem Hundreds of freshmen are entering Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical College each year, a number of them have a very poor background in physical education. Since many studies have already been made dealing directly with the freshmen, I have turned my attention to the high school teachers, using the coaches and Physical Education teachers in the Trl-State Area ( Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico) as representative examples to see if they may be in any way responsible for the difficulties of the students. The necessity of well-qualified coaches has become increasingly important. Recent wars have demanded the services of the majority of the United States\u27 most physically fit young men. The low percentage of physically fit young men has certainly given rise to special emphasis in the teaching of physical education in the public schools of America. Sports and athletics play a major role in the development of the youth of today Young people have learned to relax and to develop strong, healthy bodies through physical education courses. In order that the students get a well-rounded knowledge of the fundamentals in physical education, it is important that they receive the best training possible In high school, It Is the belief of this writer that part of the fault of the students\u27 failure in physical education and lack of skills in a variety of activities may be due to the type of instruction they receive In high school. Many ideas may be advanced as to the reasons why inadequate instruction might have been given. The writer believes that the load of the coach and physical education teacher is probably the one thing that has affected the type of Instruction the high school graduates received most, It is for this reason a study was undertaken to see just how the load of the coaches* in this area compared with that of the regular classroom teachers

    Testing of a Wireless Sensor System for Instrumented Thermal Protection Systems

    Funded by NASA's Constellation Universities Institutes Project (CUIP), we have been developing and testing a system to wirelessly power and collect data from sensors on space platforms in general and, in particular, the harsh environment of spacecraft re-entry. The elimination of wires and associated failures such as chafing, sparking, ageing, and connector issues can increase reliability and design flexibility while reducing costs. These factors present an appealing case for the pursuit of wireless solutions for harsh environments, particularly for their use in space and on spacecraft. We have designed and built a prototype wireless sensor system. The system, with capabilities similar to that of a wired sensor system, was tested in NASA Ames Research Center s Aerodynamic Heating Facility and Interaction Heating Facility.     Developing European operational oceanography for Blue Growth, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and ecosystem-based management

    Operational approaches have been more and more widely developed and used for providing marine data and information services for different socio-economic sectors of the Blue Growth and to advance knowledge about the marine environment. The objective of operational oceanographic research is to develop and improve the efficiency, timeliness, robustness and product quality of this approach. This white paper aims to address key scientific challenges and research priorities for the development of operational oceanography in Europe for the next 5–10 years. Knowledge gaps and deficiencies are identified in relation to common scientific challenges in four EuroGOOS knowledge areas: European Ocean Observations, Modelling and Forecasting Technology, Coastal Operational Oceanography and Operational Ecology. The areas “European Ocean Observations” and “Modelling and Forecasting Technology” focus on the further advancement of the basic instruments and capacities for European operational oceanography, while “Coastal Operational Oceanography” and “Operational Ecology” aim at developing new operational approaches for the corresponding knowledge areas

    Global transpiration data from sap flow measurements: the SAPFLUXNET database

    Plant transpiration links physiological responses of vegetation to water supply and demand with hydrological, energy, and carbon budgets at the land?atmosphere interface. However, despite being the main land evaporative flux at the global scale, transpiration and its response to environmental drivers are currently not well constrained by observations. Here we introduce the first global compilation of whole-plant transpiration data from sap flow measurements (SAPFLUXNET, https://sapfluxnet.creaf.cat/, last access: 8 June 2021). We harmonized and quality-controlled individual datasets supplied by contributors worldwide in a semi-automatic data workflow implemented in the R programming language. Datasets include sub-daily time series of sap flow and hydrometeorological drivers for one or more growing seasons, as well as metadata on the stand characteristics, plant attributes, and technical details of the measurements. SAPFLUXNET contains 202 globally distributed datasets with sap flow time series for 2714 plants, mostly trees, of 174 species. SAPFLUXNET has a broad bioclimatic coverage, with woodland/shrubland and temperate forest biomes especially well represented (80 % of the datasets). The measurements cover a wide variety of stand structural characteristics and plant sizes. The datasets encompass the period between 1995 and 2018, with 50 % of the datasets being at least 3 years long. Accompanying radiation and vapour pressure deficit data are available for most of the datasets,while on-site soil water content is available for 56 % of the datasets. Many datasets contain data for species that make up 90 % or more of the total stand basal area, allowing the estimation of stand transpiration in diverse ecological settings. SAPFLUXNET adds to existing plant trait datasets, ecosystem flux networks, and remote sensing products to help increase our understanding of plant water use, plant responses to drought, and ecohydrological processes.Fil: Poyatos, Rafael.     The effect of breaking sitting time with physical activity breaks on cognitive performance in young people with cerebral palsy : an exposure response cross-over feasibility design

    Objectives. To assess the feasibility of methods and estimate the potential effect of interrupting sedentary behaviour, with intermittent or continuous physical activity breaks, on cognitive performance in young people with Cerebral Palsy. Methods. A randomised three-arm exposure response cross-over design with process evaluation. Participants were recruited throughout the Thames Valley, UK between 01/11/2018 to 31/03/2020. The three 2 h activity exposure visits included: (i) sitting only (controls), (ii) sitting plus 20 min of moderate-to-vigorous activity burst, or (iii) 4×5 min of moderate-to-vigorous activity bursts, during a 2.5 h sedentary session. Measures of feasibility were sought. Cognitive performance outcomes (using the Eriksen Flanker task and Forward and Backward Digit Span) were delivered before and after the 2 h testing period. Results. 36 participants were randomised (age 13.2±2.7, Gross-Motor Functional Classification System 1–3). Study retention was 83 % across all three interventions and overall missing data for measures was 4 %. A small intervention effect was found in reaction time in the 4×5 min physical activity exposure session compared to the sedentary control condition (0.42; 95 % CI 0.40 to 0.79). There were two research-related minor adverse effects, an allergic reaction to the FreeStyle Libre and feeling faint and vomiting after consumption of glucose solution. Both events were resolved and participants continued with the study. Conclusions. The study design and intervention implementing short bursts of physical activity was feasible and indicated a potential effect on reaction time as a measure of cognitive performance in young people with cerebral palsy

    Long-term safety and efficacy of extended-interval prophylaxis with recombinant factor IX Fc fusion protein (rFIXFc) in subjects with haemophilia B

    The safety, efficacy, and prolonged half-life of recombinant factor IX Fc fusion protein (rFIXFc) were demonstrated in the Phase 3 B-LONG (adults/adolescents ≥12 years) and Kids B-LONG (children <12 years) studies of subjects with haemophilia B (≤2 IU/dl). Here, we report interim, long-term safety and efficacy data from B-YOND, the rFIXFc extension study. Eligible subjects who completed B-LONG or Kids B-LONG could enrol in B-YOND. There were four treatment groups: weekly prophylaxis (20–100 IU/kg every 7 days), individualised prophylaxis (100 IU/kg every 8–16 days), modified prophylaxis (further dosing personalisation to optimise prophylaxis), and episodic (on-demand) treatment. Subjects could change treatment groups at any point. Primary endpoint was inhibitor development. One hundred sixteen subjects enrolled in B-YOND. From the start of the parent studies to the B-YOND interim data cut, median duration of rFIXFc treatment was 39.5 months and 21.9 months among adults/adolescents and children, respectively; 68/93 (73.1 %) adults/adolescents and 9/23 (39.1 %) children had ≥100 cumulative rFIXFc exposure days. No inhibitors were observed. Median annualised bleeding rates (ABRs) were low in all prophylaxis regimens: weekly (≥12 years: 2.3; <6 years: 0.0; 6 to <12 years: 2.7), individualised (≥12 years: 2.3; 6 to <12 years: 2.4), and modified (≥12 years: 2.4). One or two infusions were sufficient to control 97 % (adults/adolescents) and 95 % (children) of bleeding episodes. Interim data from B-YOND are consistent with data from B-LONG and Kids B-LONG, and confirm the long-term safety of rFIXFc, absence of inhibitors, and maintenance of low ABRs with prophylactic dosing every 1 to 2 weeks

    The role of APOBEC3B in lung tumor evolution and targeted cancer therapy resistance

    In this study, the impact of the apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing catalytic subunit-like (APOBEC) enzyme APOBEC3B (A3B) on epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-driven lung cancer was assessed. A3B expression in EGFR mutant (EGFRmut) non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) mouse models constrained tumorigenesis, while A3B expression in tumors treated with EGFR-targeted cancer therapy was associated with treatment resistance. Analyses of human NSCLC models treated with EGFR-targeted therapy showed upregulation of A3B and revealed therapy-induced activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-ÎşB) as an inducer of A3B expression. Significantly reduced viability was observed with A3B deficiency, and A3B was required for the enrichment of APOBEC mutation signatures, in targeted therapy-treated human NSCLC preclinical models. Upregulation of A3B was confirmed in patients with NSCLC treated with EGFR-targeted therapy. This study uncovers the multifaceted roles of A3B in NSCLC and identifies A3B as a potential target for more durable responses to targeted cancer therapy.</p
