    This article presents the dossier “Worlds in Performance”, an outcome of the event “Seismology of Performance: 20 years Napedra”, which took place in 2021. Attention is directed to the “performative turn” and its seismic effects on anthropology and other fields of research. Horizons of knowledge expand, subverting notions of space, and imploding conceptions of time. The fragile and ephemeral, yet potentially powerful and explosive dimensions of bodily action spark the anthropological imagination. From bodily senses worlds of sense in friction are created. In performance, worlds are formed and disappear. Whirlpools of performance show traces of worlds yet to be. In Brazil, effects of this “performative turn” are revealed in the creation of Napedra – The Research Center in Anthropology, Performance, and Drama, and of other leading groups in anthropology and performance. They are also revealed in this dossier, which explores some of the whirlpools of worlds in performance.Este texto apresenta o dossiĂȘ “Mundos em Performance”, um dos desdobramentos do evento “Sismologia da performance: Napedra 20 anos”, realizado em 2021. Em foco, a “virada performativa” e seus efeitos sĂ­smicos na antropologia e outros campos do saber. Horizontes se ampliam, subvertendo noçÔes de campo e espaço e implodindo concepçÔes de tempo.     Design of Electromagnetic Cloaks and Concentrators Using Form-Invariant Coordinate Transformations of Maxwell's Equations

    The technique of applying form-invariant, spatial coordinate transformations of Maxwell's equations can facilitate the design of structures with unique electromagnetic or optical functionality. Here, we illustrate the transformation-optical approach in the designs of a square electromagnetic cloak and an omni-directional electromagnetic field concentrator. The transformation equations are described and the functionality of the devices is numerically confirmed by two-dimensional finite element simulations. The two devices presented demonstrate that the transformation optic approach leads to the specification of complex, anisotropic and inhomogeneous materials with well directed and distinct electromagnetic behavior.Comment: submitted to "Photonics and Nanostructures", Special Issue "PECS VII", Elsevie

    Rapid sulfurisation of highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) alkenes in sulfidic Holocene sediments from Ellis Fjord, Antarctica

The definitive version was published in Organic Geochemistry 38 (2007): 128-139, doi:10.1016/j.orggeochem.2006.08.003.Samples of particulate organic matter from the water column and anoxic Holocene sediment layers from the Small Meromictic Basin (SMB) in Ellis Fjord (eastern Antarctica) were analyzed to study the early incorporation of reduced inorganic sulfur species into highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) alkenes. HBIs were not detected in the water column samples from austral winter, whereas compounds containing the C25 HBI skeleton were abundant in all analyzed Holocene sediment layers. The structure of the C25:2 HBI alkene together with its enriched stable carbon isotopic composition suggest that the HBI alkene is produced by a diatom or diatoms probably belonging to the Navicula genus present in the sea-ice which covers the area most of the year. Within just 500 years of deposition, all of the HBI alkene was sulfurised. A mixture of products was formed, including components tentatively identified as a C25 HBI thiane and three S-containing dimers composed of two C25:1 HBI skeletons linked together by a sulfide bond. Most of the HBI alkene, however, was converted to polar S-containing compounds. The observed reaction rate for sulfurisation the C25:2 HBI alkene is the highest observed so far in natural systems. Sterols and other lipids known to be prone to sulfurisation were only minimally sulfurised under these depositional conditions.     Evidence for substantial intramolecular heterogeneity in the stable carbon isotopic composition of phytol in photoautotrophic organisms

The product, 6,10,14-trimethylpentadecan-2-one, was depleted in 13C by 1-4‰ relative to the parent phytol. This difference is significant, and indicates that the pathway for biosynthesis of phytol induces substantial intramolecular stable carbon isotopic fractionations. The nature and magnitude of the fractionations suggest strongly that it is associated both with the biosynthesis of isopentenyl pyrophosphate via the 2-C-methylerythritol-4-phosphate pathway and with the formation of carotenoids and phytol from geranyl-geraniolphosphate.     Reducing hospital admissions in remote Australia through the establishment of a palliative and chronic disease respite facility

The high prevalence of complex chronic diseases, limited access to primary care services, and the poor living situations of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians result in high hospitalisation rates and pressure on tertiary health services. Palliative Care NT identified a need for a flexible, community based, culturally appropriate respite service in Alice Springs. It was of particular interest to assess the impact of the respite service on the extent to which hospital resources were accessed by this population of patients. Methods Respite service use and hospital use data were collected over two time periods: the 12 months prior to the establishment of the service; and the first 10 months of the operation of the service. The financial implications of the facility were assessed in terms of the National Weighted Activity Unit (NWAU). Of primary interest in this study was the impact of the respite service on admissions to the Emergency Department (ED), to the Wards, and to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The amount of ventilator hours consumed was also of interest. Results Overall, there was a mean cost saving of $1882.50 per episode for hospital admissions with a reduction in: hospital admissions; mean length of stay; Intensive Care Unit (ICU) hours; and ventilator hours. Conclusions The establishment of the respite service has met an important and unmet need in Alice Springs: provision of respite where none has existed before. The service did assist with savings to the health department which could contribute to the cost of the facility over time. Two features of the respite facility that may have contributed to the savings generated were the enhanced coordination of care for patients with complex chronic diseases, as well as improved medication compliance and symptom management

    Registered reports: an early example and analysis

    © 2019 Wiseman et al.The recent ‘replication crisis’ in psychology has focused attention on ways of increasing methodological rigor within the behavioral sciences. Part of this work has involved promoting ‘Registered Reports’, wherein journals peer review papers prior to data collection and publication. Although this approach is usually seen as a relatively recent development, we note that a prototype of this publishing model was initiated in the mid-1970s by parapsychologist Martin Johnson in the European Journal of Parapsychology (EJP). A retrospective and observational comparison of Registered and non-Registered Reports published in the EJP during a seventeen-year period provides circumstantial evidence to suggest that the approach helped to reduce questionable research practices. This paper aims both to bring Johnson’s pioneering work to a wider audience, and to investigate the positive role that Registered Reports may play in helping to promote higher methodological and statistical standards.Peer reviewe
