Effects of Antibiotics Fed to Pigs During the Growing-Fattening Period
Many South Dakota farmers depend upon the pig enterprise for a portion of their yearly income. According to the South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, approximately 19 per cent of the cash farm income of South Dakota is obtained from the marketing of hogs. The successful swine producer’s primary objective is to receive the greatest possible financial return for his investment and labor. In order to accomplish this aim, it is often desirable to feed a ration which produces as fast a rate of gain as possible without sacrificing feed efficiency or carcass quality. The growth response obtained by feeding antibiotics to pigs was first realized in the summer of 1949. Since that time, many experiments have been performed with antibiotic supplementation of various swine rations. The work reported herein is a portion of a project conducted by the Animal Husbandry Department at South Dakota State College in an effort to determine the value of antibiotic supplementation in pig rations. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of discontinuing antibiotic supplementation during the growing-fattening period, and the value of combining more than one antibiotic in rations for growing-fattening pigs. Rate of gain, feed efficiency, and carcass quality were used in determining the value of the various treatments

Mixture Perception of rORI7 Agonists with Similar Odors
The straight-chain aldehyde hexanal has a distinct "green-grassy” smell quite different from the similar "citrus-waxy”-smelling homologues heptanal to undecanal (Kittel et al., Chemosens Percept 1:235-241, 2008). Two prior studies demonstrated the absence of cross-adaptation between hexanal and three other homologues (Kurtz et al., Chemosens Percept 3:149-155, 2010) but a significant mixture suppression between the dissimilar-smelling odorants hexanal and octanal (Kurtz et al., Chemosens Percept 4:186-194, 2009). In contrast, this study of similar-smelling octanal and decanal showed little mixture suppression. In contrast to the hexanal and octanal adaptation, data from Kurtz et al. (Chemosens Percept 3:149-155, 2010) showed a significant cross-adaptation between octanal and decanal. The differences observed between mixture suppression and adaptation suggest that these two phenomena are processed separatel

Performance Pressure and Comparison in Relational Category Learning
An important objective in higher-order cognition research isto understand how relational categories are acquired andapplied. Much of the research on relational category learninghas investigated the role of within-category comparisonopportunities in category acquisition and transfer – guided bypredictions from structure mapping theory that alignmentleads to highlighting and abstraction of shared relationalstructure (Gentner, 1983). Recent research has yielded awithin-category comparison advantage under the supervisedobservational learning mode (relative to twice as many single-item trials), but not under the supervised classification mode(Patterson & Kurtz, 2015). In the present study we investigatethe role that pressure to succeed at the training task – a criticaldifference between the two learning modes – plays in theapparent ineffectiveness of learning by comparison within theclassification mode. In a 2x2 between-subjects design wecrossed two levels of performance pressure (elevated andstandard) with two presentation formats (single-item andwithin-category pairs). The main findings are: (1) asignificant interaction showing a negative impact of increasedperformance pressure for single-item learners, but not forcomparison learners; and (2) a theoretically predicted, butempirically elusive effect of comparison over single-item inthe classification mode. We conclude that: (1) performancepressure exerts a deleterious effect on relational categorylearning (in accord with findings in the attribute categoryliterature) that opportunities to compare may compensate for;and (2) pressure to perform does not appear to underlielackluster comparison + classification performance (relativeto observational learning). Further, we offer new evidence onthe role that within-category comparison plays in relationalcategory learning
Free-Choice Profiling of OR-I7 Agonists and Homologues Using GCO
Straight chain aldehydes C-7 to C-10 excite olfactory receptor I-7 (OR-I7), while aldehydes C-6, C-11, and C-12 do not. Odorants C-6 to C-12 were analyzed using free-choice profiling to determine differences in olfactory perceptions. A panel of 12 subjects, two male and ten female, analyzed a set of seven saturated straight chain aldehydes of increasing length (C-6 to C-12). Panelists were trained with pure standards and tested in two trials using a seven-odorant probe delivered via gas chromatography-olfactometry. Generalized procrustes analysis of the panelists' scores provided information on differences of perceived odor quality. C-6 was characterized by green and grassy aromas, while C-7 to C-12 were characterized as citrus aromas with additional odor notes varying from floral, fresh, and soapy (C-7) to nutty, oily, and rancid (C-12). Differences in odor quality suggest that several different olfactory receptors including OR-I7 are involved in the processing of aldehydes C-6 to C-1
Learning to have a voice: The spouse\u27s experience of clergy sexual misconduct
In the present study, researchers utilized a systemic approach to examine the qualitative experiences of the spouses of religious leaders who engaged in sexual misconduct. Data was collected and analyzed through a process of narrative inquiry using in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Multiple rounds of consensus-based coding led to an eco-systemic framework for organizing and analyzing data. Participant descriptions of their experience were organized according to chronology and bio-psycho-social systemic level: intrapersonal, interpersonal, and contextual. These findings highlight the systemic risk factors for sexual misconduct and the need for interventions that extend beyond individuals to address marital, familial, and communal distress
Redshifts for 2410 Galaxies in the Century Survey Region
The `Century Survey' strip covers 102 square degrees within the limits 8.5h
\leq \alpha_{1950} \leq 16.5h, 29.0 degrees \leq \delta_{1950} \leq 30.0
degrees. The strip passes through the Corona Borealis supercluster and the
outer region of the Coma cluster.
Within the Century Survey region, we have measured 2410 redshifts which
constitute four overlapping complete redshift surveys: (1) 1728 galaxies with
Kron-Cousins R_{phot} \leq 16.13 covering the entire strip, (2) 507 galaxies
with R_{phot} \leq 16.4 in the right ascension range 8h 32m \leq \alpha_{1950}
\leq 10h 45m, (3) 1251 galaxies with absorption- and K-corrected R_{CCD, corr}
\leq 16.2 covering the right ascension range 8.5h \leq \alpha_{1950} \leq 13.5h
and (4) 1255 galaxies with absorption- and K-corrected V_{CCD, corr} \leq 16.7
also covering the right ascension range 8.5h \leq \alpha_{1950} \leq 13.5h. All
of these redshift samples are more than 98 % complete to the specified
magnitude limit.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, 2 abbreviated tables. In press, to
