Testing self-report time-use diaries against objective instruments in real time
This study provides a new test of time-use diary methodology, comparing diaries with a pair of objective criterion measures: wearable cameras and accelerometers. A volunteer sample of respondents (n = 148) completed conventional self-report paper time-use diaries using the standard UK Harmonised European Time Use Study (HETUS) instrument. On the diary day, respondents wore a camera that continuously recorded images of their activities during waking hours (approximately 1,500–2,000 images/day) and also an accelerometer that tracked their physical activity continuously throughout the 24-hour period covered by the diary. Of the initial 148 participants recruited, 131 returned usable diary and camera records, of whom 124 also provided a usable whole-day accelerometer record. The comparison of the diary data with the camera and accelerometer records strongly supports the use of diary methodology at both the aggregate (sample) and individual levels. It provides evidence that time-use data could be used to complement physical activity questionnaires for providing population-level estimates of physical activity. It also implies new opportunities for investigating techniques for calibrating metabolic equivalent of task (MET) attributions to daily activities using large-scale, population-representative time-use diary studies
Quantum and classical surface acoustic wave induced magnetoresistance oscillations in a 2D electron gas
We study theoretically the geometrical and temporal commensurability
oscillations induced in the resistivity of 2D electrons in a perpendicular
magnetic field by surface acoustic waves (SAWs). We show that there is a
positive anisotropic dynamical classical contribution and an isotropic
non-equilibrium quantum contribution to the resistivity. We describe how the
commensurability oscillations modulate the resonances in the SAW-induced
resistivity at multiples of the cyclotron frequency. We study the effects of
both short-range and long-range disorder on the resistivity corrections for
both the classical and quantum non-equilibrium cases. We predict that the
quantum correction will give rise to zero-resistance states with associated
geometrical commensurability oscillations at large SAW amplitude for
sufficiently large inelastic scattering times. These zero resistance states are
qualitatively similar to those observed under microwave illumination, and their
nature depends crucially on whether the disorder is short- or long-range.
Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for current and future

Acid Polishing of Lead Crystal Glass
The industrial partner manufactures high quality lead crystal glassware. The cutting of decorative features in the glass damages the surface and the cuts are optically opaque; to restore transparency, the glass is polished in a solution of hydrofluoric (HF) and sulphuric acid (H2 SO4 .) The polishing process comprises three stages:
1. immersion in a polishing tank containing acid;
2. rinsing in a tank containing water; and
3. settlement of the solid reaction products in a settlement tank.
The manufacturer hopes to optimise its polishing process to
• minimise the health/environmental impact of the process;
• maximise throughput;
• maintain the sharpness of the cut edges while still polishing to an acceptable level of transparency.
The study group was asked to focus on modelling three aspects of the process:
• the chemical reactions involved in the etching at the glass-acid solution interface;
• the removal of reaction products in the settlement tank;
• flow within the polishing tank
Advanced Caution and Warning System
The current focus of ACAWS is on the needs of the flight controllers. The onboard crew in low-Earth orbit has some of those same needs. Moreover, for future deep-space missions, the crew will need to accomplish many tasks autonomously due to communication time delays. Although we are focusing on flight controller needs, ACAWS technologies can be reused for on-board application, perhaps with a different level of detail and different display formats or interaction methods. We expect that providing similar tools to the flight controllers and the crew could enable more effective and efficient collaboration as well as heightened situational awareness
Downward shortwave surface irradiance from 17 sites for the FIRE/SRB Wisconsin experiment
A field experiment was conducted in Wisconsin during Oct. to Nov. 1986 for purposes of both intensive cirrus cloud measurments and SRB algorithm validation activities. The cirrus cloud measurements were part of the FIRE. Tables are presented which show data from 17 sites in the First ISCCP (International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project) Regional Experiment/Surface Radiation Budget (FIRE/SRB) Wisconsin experiment region. A discussion of intercomparison results and calibration inconsistencies is also included
Optical Spectroscopy of the Surface Population of the rho Ophiuchi Molecular Cloud: The First Wave of Star Formation
We present the results of optical spectroscopy of 139 stars obtained with the
Hydra multi-object spectrograph. The objects extend over a 1.3 square degree
area surrounding the main cloud of the rho Oph complex. The objects were
selected from narrowband images to have H alpha in emission. Using the presence
of strong H alpha emission, lithium absorption, location in the
Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, or previously reported x-ray emission, we were
able to identify 88 objects as young stars associated with the cloud. Strong H
alpha emission was confirmed in 39 objects with line widths consistent with
their origin in magnetospheric accretion columns. Two of the strongest
emission-line objects are young, x-ray emitting brown dwarf candidates with M8
spectral types. Comparisons of the bolometric luminosities and effective
temperatures with theoretical models suggest a medianage for this population of
2.1 Myr which is signifcantly older than the ages derived for objects in the
cloud core. It appears that these stars formed contemporaneously with low mass
stars in the Upper Scorpius subgroup, likely triggered by massive stars in the
Upper-Centaurus subgroup.Comment: 35 pages of postscript which includes seven figures (some of which

Optimal discrete stopping times for reliability growth tests
Often, the duration of a reliability growth development test is specified in advance and the decision to terminate or continue testing is conducted at discrete time intervals. These features are normally not captured by reliability growth models. This paper adapts a standard reliability growth model to determine the optimal time for which to plan to terminate testing. The underlying stochastic process is developed from an Order Statistic argument with Bayesian inference used to estimate the number of faults within the design and classical inference procedures used to assess the rate of fault detection. Inference procedures within this framework are explored where it is shown the Maximum Likelihood Estimators possess a small bias and converges to the Minimum Variance Unbiased Estimator after few tests for designs with moderate number of faults. It is shown that the Likelihood function can be bimodal when there is conflict between the observed rate of fault detection and the prior distribution describing the number of faults in the design. The characteristics of cognitive neuroscience tests in a schizophrenia cognition clinical trial: Psychometric properties and correlations with standard measures.
In comparison to batteries of standard neuropsychological tests, cognitive neuroscience tests may offer a more specific assessment of discrete neurobiological processes that may be aberrant in schizophrenia. However, more information regarding psychometric properties and correlations with standard neuropsychological tests and functional measures is warranted to establish their validity as treatment outcome measures. The N-back and AX-Continuous Performance Task (AX-CPT) are two promising cognitive neuroscience tests designed to measure specific components of working memory and contextual processing respectively. In the current study, we report the psychometric properties of multiple outcome measures from these two tests as well as their correlations with standard neuropsychological measures and functional capacity measures. The results suggest that while the AX-CPT and N-back display favorable psychometric properties, they do not exhibit greater sensitivity or specificity with functional measures than standard neurocognitive tests
Analysis of Fcγ receptor haplotypes in rheumatoid arthritis: FCGR3A remains a major susceptibility gene at this locus, with an additional contribution from FCGR3B
The Fcγ receptors play important roles in the initiation and regulation of many immunological and inflammatory processes, and genetic variants (FCGR) have been associated with numerous autoimmune and infectious diseases. The data in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are conflicting and we previously demonstrated an association between FCGR3A and RA. In view of the close molecular proximity with FCGR2A, FCGR2B and FCGR3B, additional polymorphisms within these genes and FCGR haplotypes were examined to refine the extent of association with RA. Biallelic polymorphisms in FCGR2A, FCGR2B and FCGR3B were examined for association with RA in two well characterized UK Caucasian and North Indian/Pakistani cohorts, in which FCGR3A genotyping had previously been undertaken. Haplotype frequencies and linkage disequilibrium were estimated across the FCGR locus and a model-free analysis was performed to determine association with RA. This was followed by regression analysis, allowing for phase uncertainty, to identify the particular haplotype(s) that influences disease risk. Our results reveal that FCGR2A, FCGR2B and FCGR3B were not associated with RA. The haplotype with the strongest association with RA susceptibility was the FCGR3A–FCGR3B 158V-NA2 haplotype (odds ratio 3.18, 95% confidence interval 1.13–8.92 [P = 0.03] for homozygotes compared with all genotypes). The association was stronger in the presence of nodules (odds ratio 5.03, 95% confidence interval 1.44–17.56; P = 0.01). This haplotype was also more common in North Indian/Pakistani RA patients than in control individuals, but not significantly so. Logistic regression analyses suggested that FCGR3A remained the most significant gene at this locus. The increased association with an FCGR3A–FCGR3B haplotype suggests that other polymorphic variants within FCGR3A or FCGR3B, or in linkage disequilibrium with this haplotype, may additionally contribute to disease pathogenesis
