Missing Variables in Theories of Strategic Human Resource Management: Time, Cause, and Individuals

    Get PDF
Much progress has been made with regard to theory building and application in the field of Strategic Human Resource Management (HRM) since Wright and McMahan’s (1992) critical review. While researchers have increasingly investigated the impact of HR on economic success within the Resource Based view of the firm, and have developed more middle level theories regarding the processes through which HR impacts firm performance, much work still needs to be done. This paper examines how future theorizing in SHRM should explore the concepts of time, cause, and individuals. Such consideration will drive more longitudinal research, more complex causal models, and consideration of multi-level phenomena

Substance Abuse and Mental Disorders Among State and Federal Prison Inmates.

    Get PDF
Research consistently demonstrates that prison inmates are more likely than the general population to suffer from both mental disorders and substance abuse. The current study explored the relationship between diagnoses of mental disorders and maladaptive substance use among state and federal prison inmates. Linear regression analysis was used to ascertain the prevalence of comorbidity of substance abuse and mental disorder, and multiple models were constructed to determine the direction of relationship between the two disorders. Overall, mental disorders and substance use were positively related within the sample, though mixed conclusions were drawn regarding the exact nature of their relationship. Recommendations for future study and improvements to the specificity of mental disorders and substance use measures are made

Realism in the Philosophy of Orestes A. Brownson

Thesis (Ph.D)--Boston UniversityThe primary purpose of this dissertation is to explicate and assess the realistic elements in the philosophical position of Orestes A. Brownson. From a critical viewpoint, Brownson disavows one of the main trends of modern philosophy from Descartes onward. His fundamental conviction is that there are three chief factors which have vitiated the great bulk of modern philosophy: first, the tendency to treat the question of method before that of principles; second, relative to method itself, the tendency to employ what Brownson labels the method of "exclusive psychology;" third, the consequent tendency of such a method toward an epistemological idealism, according to which the idea or mental representation is the direct and immediate object of conscious awareness. While Brownson disavows the general trend of modern philosophy, his attack, more specifically, is directed against Descartes, regarded as the major representative of the method of "exclusive psychology", and against Locke taken as representative of the sensistic approach in philosophy. Finally, he directs his attack upon the German philosophers in general, and Kant in particular, although he does accept in substance at least, the Kantian thesis that there are certain pre-empirical elements in the knowledge situation. However, Brownson's claim is that though pre-empirical they none the less have an objective status. In the last analysis, Brownson's rejection of the positions of the aforementioned philosophers is due to his conviction that their respective positions logically, if not psychologically, culminate in skepticism. Avoiding “musty mutton chops”: the network narrative of an American merchant in London, 1771-1774

Historians have increasingly been using network and narrative analysis as a means by which to explore their data. By doing so, they are able to explore how actors of interest used their relationships to undertake business and economic endeavors, and how, in turn, these were shaped by the discourse to which they had access. This paper presents a novel methodology using visual analytics to combine both social network (relationship) and textual (sentiment) analysis to visualize the information contained in historical sources over time. The definition of network narrative posited in this paper allows the historian to quantify and therefore assess the impact of, and reaction to, endogenous and exogenous events on actor networks. In order demonstrate the applicability of this approach, we apply it to the case study of Joshua Johnson, an American merchant in London during the 1772 credit crisis. This paper builds on the more recent network studies which show that networks were not only complex, but changed over time in reaction to events

    Recurrence Spectroscopy in Time-Dependent Fields

Closed-orbit theory is a semiclassical technique for explaining the spectra of Rydberg atoms in external fields. We derive an alternative version of closed-orbit theory that applies when the external fields are time dependent. We compare the results of this theory with experiments on lithium atoms in a weak oscillating electric field

Helicity Parton Distributions from Spin Asymmetries in W-Boson Production at RHIC

We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the cross section and longitudinal spin asymmetry in single-inclusive charged-lepton production, pp -> l X, at RHIC, where the lepton is produced in the decay of an electroweak gauge boson. Our calculation is presented in terms of a multi-purpose Monte-Carlo integration program that may be readily used to include experimental spin asymmetry data in a global analysis of helicity parton densities. We perform a toy global analysis, studying the impact of anticipated RHIC data on our knowledge about the polarized anti-quark distributions.Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures included.
