The epidemiology of HIV among young people in sub-Saharan Africa: know your local epidemic and its implications for prevention.

BACKGROUND: Broad patterns of HIV epidemiology are frequently used to design generic HIV programs in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: We reviewed the epidemiology of HIV among young people in sub-Saharan Africa, and explored the unique dynamics of infection in its different regions. RESULTS: In 2009, HIV prevalence among youth in sub-Saharan Africa was an estimated 1.4% in males and 3.4% in females, but these values mask wide variation at regional and national levels. Within countries there are further major differences in HIV prevalence, such as by sex, urban/rural location, economic status, education, or ethnic group. Within this highly nuanced context, HIV prevention programs targeting youth must consider both where new infections are occurring and where they are coming from. CONCLUSIONS: Given the epidemiology, one-size-fits-all HIV prevention programs are usually inappropriate at regional and national levels. Consideration of local context and risk associated with life transitions, such as leaving school or getting married, is imperative to successful programming for young people

A Call for a Unified Business Organization Law

The authors propose a wholesale reformation of business organization law. The current regime of business organization law reflects an attempt to blend the benefits of limited liability with conduit or flow-through taxation. The result has been a haphazard development of business forms, often created to satisfy shifting federal tax law guidelines. The authors trace this development, from the traditional corporation and partnership forms through limited partnerships and Subchapter S corporations to the recent organizational forms of limited liability companies and limited liability partnerships. The authors show how the search for the ideal organizational form has failed, leaving an unwieldy morass of choice of entity issues for the business owner. The authors propose a two-tier framework to overhaul existing business organization law and classification. Traditional corporations would continue in existence. The remaining myriad of business forms would be replaced by a simplified Standard Business Organization (“SBO”) governed by a Standard Business Code (“SBC”). The hallmarks of the SBO under the SBC would be limited liability for owners, pass-through taxation, free transferability of interests, perpetual existence or continuity of life, and presumed owner management. These attributes conform to the default features most desired by business owners. Consistent with recent changes by the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service in the traditional entity classification scheme for taxation purposes, the two-tier framework combines the benefits of consistency, flexibility, and simplicity. Current laws and regulations governing business organizations formed as corporations would remain intact, allowing states to continue to “race to the top” (or bottom), and affording a substantial federal entity-level tax base from these entities. The SBC would provide a flexible, owner-oriented operational structure for the SBO while avoiding entity-level taxation, except where the SBO chooses to become publicly traded. The result is a vastly simplified system of business organization law that elevates the substance of desired business organization law elements over the form of attributes necessary to satisfy federal tax guidelines

Effects Of Reform-based Mathematics Instruction On Low Achievers In Five Third-grade Classrooms

In this study we examined the responses of 16 low-achieving students to reform-based mathematics instruction in 5 elementary classrooms for 1 year. We used qualitative methods at 2 schools to identify the needs of low achievers in these classrooms, which were using an innovative curriculum. Through classroom observations and interviews with teachers, we studied the involvement of low achievers in whole-class discussions and pair work. Results suggested that both the organization and task demands of the reform classrooms presented verbal and social challenges to low achievers that need to be addressed if these students are to benefit from reform-based mathematics instruction

Publishing in Ethnobiology Letters in 2018

Ethnobiology Letters was launched in 2010 with the goal of providing a free-to-publish, open-access, online venue for short peer-reviewed articles in ethnobiology (Wolverton et al. 2010). Over the course of nine volumes, which comprise 12 issues, published since that date, Ethnobiology Letters has grown and changed, with new editors, authors, and submission categories. We write this editorial to highlight those changes, as well as to report submission and review metrics for the journal since the inception of our online journal management system. We describe the current status of Ethnobiology Letters and plans for the future of the journal.Published versio

Flagellar membrane association via interaction with lipid rafts

The eukaryotic flagellar membrane has a distinct composition from other domains of the plasmalemma. Our work shows that the specialized composition of the trypanosome flagellar membrane reflects increased concentrations of sterols and saturated fatty acids, correlating with direct observation of high liquid order by laurdan fluorescence microscopy. These findings indicate that the trypanosome flagellar membrane possesses high concentrations of lipid rafts: discrete regions of lateral heterogeneity in plasma membranes that serve to sequester and organize specialized protein complexes. Consistent with this, a dually acylated Ca(2+) sensor that is concentrated in the flagellum is found in detergent-resistant membranes and mislocalizes if the lipid rafts are disrupted. Detergent-extracted cells have discrete membrane patches localized on the surface of the flagellar axoneme, suggestive of intraflagellar transport particles. Together, these results provide biophysical and biochemical evidence to indicate that lipid rafts are enriched in the trypanosome flagellar membrane, providing a unique mechanism for flagellar protein localization and illustrating a novel means by which specialized cellular functions may be partitioned to discrete membrane domains

Notwithstanding published articles on the nature and quality of research and scholarship in practically every other business discipline, to date there has been little systematic evaluation of relevant journals in the business law discipline. This deficiency is due, in part, to the fact that business law may still be described as a developing discipline. Thus, the focus of this article is on delineating the nature of research and scholarship within the business law discipline. Specifically, the publishing practices of business law faculty from academic institutions that were members of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International), the premier international accrediting body for schools of business, were examined. The comparative perspective developed in this study provides a wide-ranging view of factors related to both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of research and scholarship among business law scholars
