    Kansas State University, in cooperation with the Beef Empire Days committee, developed a new beef carcass index system for 1991, incorporating yield and quality traits as indicators of carcass merit. Development of the system considered current industry and consumer demands in a critical evaluation of final carcass ranking. The index starts from 100 points and applies positive and negative adjustments for hot carcass weight; ribeye area; adjusted 12th rib fat thickness; percent kidney, pelvic, and heart fat; and quality grade. The index was first used in 1991

    Isoproterenol and 8-bromo-cyclic adenosine monophosphate stimulate the expression of the angiotensinogen gene in opossum kidney cells. To investigate whether the expression of the renal angiotensinogen (ANG) gene is regulated by ÎČ-adrenoceptors and the cAMP-dependent protein kinase A pathway, we introduced stably the fusion gene containing the 5â€Č-flanking regulatory sequence of the ANG gene with a human growth hormone (hGH) gene as a reporter, pOGH (ANG N-1498/+18), into opossum kidney (OK) cells. We successfully obtained several stable transformants with a high expression of the pOGH (ANG N-1498/+18) fusion gene. One stable transformant (OK 27) that is able to maintain the expression of pOGH (ANG N-1498/+18) in culture for more than a year was used in the present study. The level of expression of the pOGH (ANG N-1498/+18) in OK 27 was evaluated by the amount of immunoreactive-hGH (IR-hGH) secreted into the culture medium. The addition of isoproterenol (10-11 M to 10-9 M) stimulated the expression of pOGH (ANG N-1498/+18) and increased the accumulation of intracellular cAMP. Higher concentrations of isoproterenol (that is, greater than 10-9 M) had low or minimal effect. In contrast, the addition of 8-bromo-cAMP (8-Br-cAMP) and forskolin stimulated the expression of pOGH (ANG N-1498/+18) in a dose-dependent manner. The stimulatory effect of isoproterenol was blocked by the presence of propranolol, atenolol and ICI 118,551. The addition of ICI 118,551, however, was less effective than atenolol. Furthermore, the stimulatory effect of isoproterenol and 8-Br-cAMP on the expression of the pOGH (ANG N-1498/+18) was inhibited by the presence of Rp-cAMP (an inhibitor of cAMP-dependent protein kinase AI and II). These studies demonstrated that the expression of the pOGH (ANG N-1498/+18) in OK cells is stimulated by ÎČ-adrenoceptors and the cAMP-dependent protein kinase A pathway. Our data indicate that OK 27 cells provide a useful model to study the regulation of expression of the ANG gene in vitro

    Crystal structure and magnetic modulation in ÎČ−Ce2O2FeSe2

    We report a combination of X-ray and neutron diffraction studies, Mossbauer spectroscopy and muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements to probe the structure and magnetic properties of the semiconducting beta-Ce2O2FeSe2 oxychalcogenide. We report a new structural description in space group Pna21 which is consistent with diffraction data and second harmonic generation measurements and reveal an order-disorder transition on one Fe site at TOD ~ 330 K. Susceptibility measurements, Mossbauer and muSR reveal antiferromagnetic ordering below TN = 86 K and more complex short range order above this temperature. 12 K neutron diffraction data reveal a modulated magnetic structure with q = 0.444 bN*

    Structural, item, and test generalizability of the psychopathology checklist - revised to offenders with intellectual disabilities

    The Psychopathy Checklist–Revised (PCL-R) is the most widely used measure of psychopathy in forensic clinical practice, but the generalizability of the measure to offenders with intellectual disabilities (ID) has not been clearly established. This study examined the structural equivalence and scalar equivalence of the PCL-R in a sample of 185 male offenders with ID in forensic mental health settings, as compared with a sample of 1,212 male prisoners without ID. Three models of the PCL-R’s factor structure were evaluated with confirmatory factor analysis. The 3-factor hierarchical model of psychopathy was found to be a good fit to the ID PCL-R data, whereas neither the 4-factor model nor the traditional 2-factor model fitted. There were no cross-group differences in the factor structure, providing evidence of structural equivalence. However, item response theory analyses indicated metric differences in the ratings of psychopathy symptoms between the ID group and the comparison prisoner group. This finding has potential implications for the interpretation of PCL-R scores obtained with people with ID in forensic psychiatric settings

    QCD Form Factors and Hadron Helicity Non-Conservation

    Recent data for the ratio R(Q)=QF2(Q2)/F1(Q2)R(Q)= QF_{2}(Q^{2})/F_{1}(Q^{2}) shocked the community by disobeying expectations held for 50 years. We examine the status of perturbative QCD predictions for helicity-flip form factors. Contrary to common belief, we find there is no rule of hadron helicity conservation for form factors. Instead the analysis yields an inequality that the leading power of helicity-flip processes may equal or exceed the power of helicity conserving processes. Numerical calculations support the rule, and extend the result to the regime of laboratory momentum transfer Q2Q^{2}. Quark orbital angular momentum, an important feature of the helicity flip processes, may play a role in all form factors at large Q2Q^{2}, depending on the quark wave functions.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure

    Electron energy loss and induced photon emission in photonic crystals

    The interaction of a fast electron with a photonic crystal is investigated by solving the Maxwell equations exactly for the external field provided by the electron in the presence of the crystal. The energy loss is obtained from the retarding force exerted on the electron by the induced electric field. The features of the energy loss spectra are shown to be related to the photonic band structure of the crystal. Two different regimes are discussed: for small lattice constants aa relative to the wavelength of the associated electron excitations λ\lambda, an effective medium theory can be used to describe the material; however, for a∌λa\sim\lambda the photonic band structure plays an important role. Special attention is paid to the frequency gap regions in the latter case.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

    Feeding and Distribution of Porosity in Cast Al-Si Alloys as Function of Alloy Composition and Modification

    Unmodified, Na-modified, and Sr-modified castings of Al-7 pct Si and Al-12.5 pct Si alloys were cast in molds in which it was possible to create different cooling conditions. It is shown how solidification influences the distribution of porosity at the surface and the center of the castings as a function of modification and Si content in sand- and chill-cast samples. Eutectic modification, Si content, and cooling conditions have a great impact on the distribution of porosity. Unmodified and Na-modified castings are more easily fed with porosity tending to congregate near the centerline of the casting, while Sr-modified castings solidify in a mushy manner that creates a more homogeneous distribution of porosity in the casting. The amount of porosity was highest in the Sr-modified alloys, lower in the Na-modified alloys, and lowest in the unmodified alloys. The size of the porosity-free layer and the effectiveness of the feeders were greater in the castings made with the steel chills due to the increased thermal gradients and consequent increase in the directionality of solidification

    Non-Critical Liouville String Escapes Constraints on Generic Models of Quantum Gravity

    It has recently been pointed out that generic models of quantum gravity must contend with severe phenomenological constraints imposed by gravitational Cerenkov radiation, neutrino oscillations and the cosmic microwave background radiation. We show how the non-critical Liouville-string model of quantum gravity we have proposed escapes these constraints. It gives energetic particles subluminal velocities, obviating the danger of gravitational Cerenkov radiation. The effect on neutrino propagation is naturally flavour-independent, obviating any impact on oscillation phenomenology. Deviations from the expected black-body spectrum and the effects of time delays and stochastic fluctuations in the propagation of cosmic microwave background photons are negligible, as are their effects on observable spectral lines from high-redshift astrophysical objects.Comment: 15 pages LaTeX, 2 eps figures include
