    Slope and generalization properties of neural networks

    Neural networks are very successful tools in for example advanced classification. From a statistical point of view, fitting a neural network may be seen as a kind of regression, where we seek a function from the input space to a space of classification probabilities that follows the "general" shape of the data, but avoids overfitting by avoiding memorization of individual data points. In statistics, this can be done by controlling the geometric complexity of the regression function. We propose to do something similar when fitting neural networks by controlling the slope of the network. After defining the slope and discussing some of its theoretical properties, we go on to show empirically in examples, using ReLU networks, that the distribution of the slope of a well-trained neural network classifier is generally independent of the width of the layers in a fully connected network, and that the mean of the distribution only has a weak dependence on the model architecture in general. The slope is of similar size throughout the relevant volume, and varies smoothly. It also behaves as predicted in rescaling examples. We discuss possible applications of the slope concept, such as using it as a part of the loss function or stopping criterion during network training, or ranking data sets in terms of their complexity

    Eating disorders - knowledge, attitudes, management and clinical experience of Norwegian dentists

    Background The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge, attitudes and clinical experience with regard to patients with eating disorders (ED) among Norwegian dentists. Methods In 2010, a questionnaire was sent to all dentists in Norway (N = 4282) comprising 33 questions related to demographics of the participating dentists, their knowledge of ED (general and oral health aspects), clinical experience, attitudes and perceived management preferences. Results The participation rate was 40 % (47 % women and 53 % men). Their knowledge about ED was often retrieved from common media sources and the greater part of the participants reported they had seen very few patients with ED during their professional career. Female dentists reported superior knowledge about ED compared to males, but the former experienced greater difficulties to inform about the condition. Referrals of the patient to other health facilities were significantly more common among female compared to male dentists. The majority of dentists (76 %) reported a need of more education related to ED management. Conclusions The Norwegian dentists in this study reported limited clinical experience and insufficient knowledge regarding ED. There is therefore a need to increase both undergraduate and continuing education in this field, which can improve preventive and management measures that a dentist can provide for ED patients.publishedVersio

    Exact spectral norm regularization for neural networks

    We pursue a line of research that seeks to regularize the spectral norm of the Jacobian of the input-output mapping for deep neural networks. While previous work rely on upper bounding techniques, we provide a scheme that targets the exactspectral norm. We showcase that our algorithm achieves an improved generalization performance compared to previous spectral regularization techniques while simultaneously maintaining a strong safeguard against natural and adversarialnoise. Moreover, we further explore some previous reasoning concerning the strong adversarial protection that Jacobian regularization provides and show that it can be misleading

    Evaluation of Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and postal survey in follow-up of children and adolescents discharged from psychiatric outpatient treatment: a randomized controlled trial

    Systematic evaluation of child and adolescent psychiatric outpatient treatment is important but time-consuming. The aim of this paper was to study whether Interactive Voice Response (IVR) is a more effective method than a questionnaire sent by post when following up outpatient treatment in child and adolescent psychiatry. Eighty patients were recruited from a child and adolescent psychiatric outpatient unit in Sweden. One parent of each of the patients was randomized to complete the BCFPI follow-up form, using either IVR (n = 40) or postal survey (n = 40) one month after discharge. The response rate for complete answers was 65% in the IVR group and 38% in the postal survey group (p = 0.014). There was less need for reminders in the IVR group (p = 0.000). IVR is a promising and cost-effective method for evaluating evidence-based treatment in child and adolescent psychiatric care

    Interactive voice response - an automated follow-up technique for adolescents discharged from acute psychiatric inpatient care : a randomised controlled trial

    Follow-up methods must be easy for young people to handle. We examine Interactive Voice Response (IVR) as a method for collecting self-reported data. Sixty inpatients were recruited from a child and adolescent psychiatric emergency unit in Malmö, Sweden and called every second (N = 30) or every fourth (N = 30) day from discharge until first visit in outpatient care. A pre-recorded voice asked them to evaluate their current mood using their mobile phones. Average response rate was 91%, and 71% had a 100% response rate. Gender, age and length of inpatient treatment did not affect response rate, nor did randomisation. Boys estimated their current mood on average as 3.52 units higher than girls, CI = (2.65, 4.48). Automated IVR is a feasible method of collecting follow-up data among adolescents discharged from a psychiatric emergency unit

    Estimating the probability distributions of radioactive concrete in the building stock using Bayesian networks

    The undesirable legacy of radioactive concrete (blue concrete) in post-war dwellings contributes to increased indoor radon levels and health threats to occupants. Despite continuous decontamination efforts, blue concrete still remains in the Swedish building stock due to low traceability as the consequence of lacking systematic documentation in technical descriptions and drawings and resource-demanding large-scaled radiation screening.The paper aims to explore the predictive inference potential of learning Bayesian networks for evaluating the presence probability of blue concrete. By integrating blue concrete records from indoor radon measurements, pre-demolition audit inventories, and building registers, it is possible to estimate buildings with high probabilities of containing blue concrete and encode the dependent relationships between variables. The findings show that blue concrete is estimated to be present in more than 30% of existing buildings, more than the current expertassumptions of 18–20%. The probability of detecting blue concrete depends on the distance to historical blue concrete manufacturing plants, building class, and construction year, but it is independent of floor area and basements. Multifamily houses and buildings built between 1960 and 1968 or nearby manufacturing plants are more likely to contain blue concrete. Despite heuristic, the data-driven approach offers an overview of the extent and the probability distribution of blue concrete-prone buildings in the regional building stock. The paper contributes to method development for pattern identification for hazardous building materials, i.e., blue concrete, and the trained models can be used for risk-based inspection planning before renovation and selective demolition

    An open prospective study evaluating efficacy and safety of a new medical device for rectal application of activated carbon in the treatment of chronic, uncomplicated perianal fistulas

    Purpose: It has been proposed that biological/chemical substances in the intestine might play a role in the occurrence and deterioration of perianal fistulas. Elimination of such unidentified factors from the lower gastrointestinal tract might offer a new strategy for the management of anal fistulas. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical effects on non-Crohn’s disease perianal fistula healing, and the safety and tolerability of a new medical device that applies high-purity, high-activity granular activated carbon locally into the rectum twice daily of patients with perianal fistulas without any concomitant medication. Methods: An open, single-arm, prospective study with active treatment for 8 weeks and an optional follow-up until week 24 (ClinicalTrial.govidentifier NCT01462747) among patients with chronic, uncomplicated perianal fistulas scheduled for surgery was conducted. Results: Of 28 patients included, 10 patients (35.7%) showed complete fistula healing (closed, no discharge on palpation) after 8 weeks; seven of these patients, corresponding to 25% of the enrolled patients, remained in remission for up to 31 weeks. At week 8, there was a statistically significant reduction in the discharge visual analog scale (p = 0.04), a significant improvement in the patient-perceived quality of life for the category of embarrassment (p = 0.002), and a trend toward improvement in the other assessment categories. Conclusions: The treatment was well tolerated, and patient acceptance was high. The results support the efficacy and safety of locally administered activated carbon for the treatment of patients with chronic uncomplicated perianal fistulas not receiving any other medication for fistula problems
