    Get PDF
Background and Objective: Microalgae are photosynthetic organisms that are in contact with several reactive oxygen species, and under these conditions microalgae produce a wide variety of antioxidant compounds to protect from highly oxidant growth conditions, these facts can be used to optimize antioxidant production, however, firstly studies of antioxidant production by microalgae should be done. This work was focused to establish differences of antioxidants formation among microalgae species and elucidate some antioxidant properties of phycocyanin.Material and Methods: Superoxide dismutase activity was performed by using a commercial kit and determined by spectrophotometry. Phycocyanin and carotenoids were quantified by spectrophotometry and tocopherols were analysed by high pressure liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector. Trolox equivalent antioxidant activity was determined by using 2,2´-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic) reagent, scavenging and synergic antioxidant activities were also ascertained. Results and Conclusion: The microalgae used in this study produces different amounts of superoxide dismutase, carotenoids, α, δ and γ-tocopherols, and phycocyanin. Trolox equivalent antioxidant activity varied according with the amount of antioxidants produced. Phycocyanin scavenge superoxide and hydrogen peroxide radicals work well to produce synergy with α-tocopherol, increasing protection of biomolecules against oxidation. One microalgae specie may be selected to produce one of the antioxidants mentioned above, but more detailed studies on growth phases are required to improve the antioxidant production. Microalgae has the potential to be considered as a natural antioxidants source.Conflict of interest: The authors declare no conflict of interest

An iridium complex featuring a metalated lutidine-derived CNP ligand reacts with KOt Bu to yield a dimeric species with the two metal centers bound to the opposite ligands through the CHN arms. Furthermore, reaction with H2 in the presence of KOt Bu of the same iridium derivative results in the hydrogenation of the –CHQCH– imidazolylidene moiety of the complex. NMR spectroscopy monitoring of the latter reaction supports the initial formation of a dihydride iridium complex containing an imidazolylidene ligand fragment that is hydrogenated after prolonged reaction time.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad de España (MINECO) y fondos FEDER de la Unión Europea-CTQ2015-69568-P, CTQ2016-80814-R y CTQ2016- 81797-RED

RF Acquisition System Based on μTCA for Testing of High-Gradient Acceleration Cavities

    Get PDF
The radio frequency (RF) laboratory hosted in the Corpuscular Physics Institute (IFIC) of the University of Valencia is designed to house a high-power and high-repetition-rate facility to test normal conduction RF accelerator cavities in the S-Band (2.9985 GHz) in order to perform R&D activities related to particle accelerator cavities. The system, which manages the entire process of RF signal generation, data acquisition and closed-loop control of the laboratory, is currently based on a modular and compact PXI platform system. This contribution details the development of a platform with similar features, but which is based on open architecture standards at both the hardware and software level. For this purpose, a complete system based on the μTCA platform has been developed. This new system must be able to work with accelerator cavities at other operating frequencies, such as 750 MHz, as well as to explore different options at firmware and software levels based on open-source codes

Construcción de un diccionario didáctico digital para la mejora del aprendizaje del latín y estudio preliminar de su extensión a otras lenguas

    Get PDF

[Purpose]: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of patients with IE in three groups of age and to assess the ability of age and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to predict mortality. [Methods]: Prospective cohort study of all patients with IE included in the GAMES Spanish database between 2008 and 2015.Patients were stratified into three age groups:<65 years,65 to 80 years,and ≥ 80 years.The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated to quantify the diagnostic accuracy of the CCI to predict mortality risk. [Results]: A total of 3120 patients with IE (1327 < 65 years;1291 65-80 years;502 ≥ 80 years) were enrolled.Fever and heart failure were the most common presentations of IE, with no differences among age groups.Patients ≥80 years who underwent surgery were significantly lower compared with other age groups (14.3%,65 years; 20.5%,65-79 years; 31.3%,≥80 years). In-hospital mortality was lower in the <65-year group (20.3%,<65 years;30.1%,65-79 years;34.7%,≥80 years;p < 0.001) as well as 1-year mortality (3.2%, <65 years; 5.5%, 65-80 years;7.6%,≥80 years; p = 0.003).Independent predictors of mortality were age ≥ 80 years (hazard ratio [HR]:2.78;95% confidence interval [CI]:2.32–3.34), CCI ≥ 3 (HR:1.62; 95% CI:1.39–1.88),and non-performed surgery (HR:1.64;95% CI:11.16–1.58).When the three age groups were compared, the AUROC curve for CCI was significantly larger for patients aged <65 years(p < 0.001) for both in-hospital and 1-year mortality. [Conclusion]: There were no differences in the clinical presentation of IE between the groups. Age ≥ 80 years, high comorbidity (measured by CCI),and non-performance of surgery were independent predictors of mortality in patients with IE.CCI could help to identify those patients with IE and surgical indication who present a lower risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality after surgery, especially in the <65-year group
