    Effectiveness of a Worksite-Based Lifestyle Intervention on Employees’ Obesity Control and Prevention in China: A Group Randomized Experimental Study

    Background: This study was to culturally adapt a lifestyle intervention for employees’ obesity control and prevention using a participatory process, and evaluate the effectiveness of the project at worksites. Methods: A group randomized experimental study included four worksites (two intervention, two control) in the Yangtze River Delta in China was conducted. A total of 388 participants (216 in the intervention worksites and 172 in the control worksites) were finally recruited from 955 employees at the four worksites (464 in the intervention worksites and 491 in the control worksites). The final evaluation was completed by two hundred and seventy-eight employees (159 in the intervention worksites and 119 in the control worksites, respectively). Data of demographic information, weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference and weight-related behaviors including diary behaviors and physical activities were collected before and after a 12-month intervention and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, chi-square test, linear mixed regression and logistic mixed regression. Results: Although the intervention worksites had a reduction in body mass index (23.21 to 22.95, p < 0.01), hip circumference (95.97 to 95.28, p = 0.03) and waist-to-height ratio (0.49 to 0.48, p = 0.01), the differential changes compared to those of the control group were not statistically significant. The frequency of sweet beverages (−1.81, 95%CI: −0.52, −3.11), frequency of vegetable intake (5.66, 95%CI: 1.59, 9.74), daily servings of vegetables (0.53, 95%CI: 0.24, 0.82), frequency of fruit intake (3.68, 95%CI: 1.25, 6.12), daily servings of fruit (0.26, 95%CI: 0.44, 0.92), daily servings of vegetables and fruit (0.79, 95%CI: 0.43, 1.16), daily steps (863.19, 95%CI: 161.42, 1564.97) and self-efficacy to change physical activity (OR = 1.91, 95%CI: 1.02,3.60) were more improved in the intervention group than were those measures in the control group. Conclusions: The worksite-based lifestyle intervention project for obesity control and prevention improved several employees’ dietary behaviors and physical activities at worksites in China in a short time. Long-term intervention with larger samples in more worksites should be further examined

    Nano self-assemblies based on cholate grafted poly-L-lysine enhanced the solubility of sterol-like drugs

    The physicochemical compatibility between amphiphilic polymers and hydrophobic drugs has been recognized as an important issue for improving the drug solubilisation in polymeric micelle formulations. In this work, poly-L-lysine (PLL) grafted by cholate pendants as the only hydrophobic moiety were synthesized in order to facilitate the solubilisation of sterol drugs. Results showed that micelles formed by cholate grafted PLL encapsulated significantly higher level of prednisolone and estradiol than palmitoylated PLL micelles, whereas the solubilisation capacity of non-sterol drug (griseofulvin) is inefficient for both polymers. This suggests that higher drug-polymer incorporation can be achieved by the inclusion of hydrophobic moieties with similar architecture as the drugs, i.e. 'drug-like' functional groups, which will be useful for the future design of colloidal systems for the encapsulation of specific drug.Peer reviewe

    Influence of Prolonged Visual Display Terminal Use and Exercise on Physical and Mental Conditions of Internet Staff in Hangzhou, China

    To examine the effects of prolonged visual display terminal (VDT) working hours and exercise frequency on VDT-related symptoms, we recruited 944 Chinese internet staff for the study. A self-administered questionnaire survey was used to obtain the hours of daily VDT work, exercise frequency, and the physical and mental health of the participants. The daily VDT working time of participants was 8.7 hours. Musculoskeletal pain and eye complaints were prevalent, and the participants had poor mental health status. When daily VDT operation time was more than 11 hours, VDT-related symptoms, including backache (odds ratios (OR) = 3.59), wrist pain (OR = 1.88), hip pain (OR = 2.42), dry eyes (OR = 2.22), and ocular soreness (OR = 2.16) were more likely to occur, and an increased risk of serious occupational stress (OR = 6.75) and job burnout (OR = 2.66) was found in internet workers. Compared with those who never exercised, appropriate exercise frequency (three times per week) was helpful to relieve pain in the shoulders (OR = 0.28), neck (OR = 0.45), back (OR = 0.30), lower back (OR = 0.25), and wrists (OR = 0.38), as well as to prevent vision loss (OR = 0.33) and job burnout (OR = 0.42). Therefore, avoiding excessive VDT exposure and performing moderate exercise could protect the physical and mental health of internet staff from the adverse effects of VDT

    Evaluating the diagnostic properties of the Whooley questionnaire as a case-finding instrument for depression among Chinese women during and after pregnancy

    Purpose: There is a rising prevalence in undetected perinatal depression in many countries, more effort in screening and early identification of perinatal depression is needed. While the Whooley questionnaire is the recommended case-finding strategy for perinatal depression, there is no validated Chinese version. The aim was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and stability of the translated Chinese Whooley questionnaire against gold standard measurement during and early after pregnancy. Materials and Methods: This observational study recruited 131 pregnant women from an antenatal clinic in Hong Kong from September 2019 to May 2020. We translated the Whooley questionnaire in Chinese and evaluated self-reported responses against an interviewer-assessed diagnostic standard (DSM-IV criteria) in 107 women at 26–28 gestational weeks. We calculated sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio and diagnostic odds ratio, with DSM-IV diagnosis as the gold standard. Results: The Chinese Whooley questions had a sensitivity of 79% (95% CI 54.4–93.9), a specificity of 97% (95% CI 90.4–99.3), a positive likelihood ratio of 23.2 (95% CI 7.4–72.1) and a negative likelihood ratio of 0.2 (95% CI 0.1–0.5) in identifying perinatal depression. Conclusion: The translated Chinese Whooley questionnaire has an acceptable diagnostic accuracy in identifying perinatal depression. It can be implemented in health services among Cantonesespeaking Chinese population

    In Situ Construction of Zn<sub>2</sub>Mo<sub>3</sub>O<sub>8</sub>/ZnO Hierarchical Nanosheets on Graphene as Advanced Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

    Transition-metal oxides as anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have attracted enormous interest because of their high theoretical capacity, low cost, and high reserve abundance. Unfortunately, they commonly suffer from poor electronic and ionic conductivity and relatively large volume expansion during discharge/charge processes, thereby triggering inferior cyclic performance and rate capability. Herein, a molybdenum–zinc bimetal oxide-based composite structure (Zn2Mo3O8/ZnO/rGO) with rectangular Zn2Mo3O8/ZnO nanosheets uniformly dispersed on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) has been prepared by using a simple and controllable cyanometallic framework template method. The Zn2Mo3O8/ZnO rectangular nanosheets with desirable porous features are composed of nanocrystalline subunits, facilitating the exposure of abundant active sites and providing sufficient contact with the electrolyte. Benefiting from the composition and structural merits as well as the induced synergistic effects, the Zn2Mo3O8/ZnO/rGO composite as LIB anodes delivers superior electrochemical properties, including high reversible capacity (960 mA h g–1 after 100 cycles at 200 mA g–1), outstanding rate performance (417 mA h g–1 at 10,000 mA g–1), and admirable long-term cyclic stability (862 mA h g–1 after 400 cycles at 1000 mA g–1). The mechanism of lithium storage and the formation of SEI film are systematically elucidated. This work provides an effective strategy for synthesizing promising Mo-cluster compound-based anodes for high-performance LIBs
