Explanation on “Xue Bi” syndrome in Jin Kui Yao Lue

    Get PDF
‘Xue Bi’ syndrome was first described in the book ‘Jin Kui Yao Lue’ (Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber’), originally a part of ‘Shang Han Za Bing Lun’ (Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases) written by Dr Zhang Zhong-jing in the East Han Dynasty. In Chapter 6 “On Pulse and Symptoms and Treatments of Xue Bi 血痹’ and Xu Lao 虚劳” Dr Zhang Zhong-jing said that, “the patient suffering from ‘xue bi’ syndrome with weak pulse palpable both superficially and deeply on the ‘cun’ and ‘guan’ positions, a thin and tense pulse on the ‘chi’ position, and an external symptom is numbness of the limbs like that of ‘feng bi’ ( wind paralysis), ….’. On the reason of ‘Xue Bi’, Dr Zhang Zhong-jing said that, “powerful and wealthy people generally have weak bone and fat muscle. If they slept without cover after being exhausted with sweating, they could be attacked by slight wind; as a result, Xue Bi may occur.” Today, most of scholars believe that ‘Xue Bi’ belongs to categories of symptoms of peripheral neuritis and other conditions

Rate optimal multiple testing procedure in high-dimensional regression

Multiple testing and variable selection have gained much attention in statistical theory and methodology research. They are dealing with the same problem of identifying the important variables among many (Jin, 2012). However, there is little overlap in the literature. Research on variable selection has been focusing on selection consistency, i.e., both type I and type II errors converging to zero. This is only possible when the signals are sufficiently strong, contrary to many modern applications. For the regime where the signals are both rare and weak, it is inevitable that a certain amount of false discoveries will be allowed, as long as some error rate can be controlled. In this paper, motivated by the research by Ji and Jin (2012) and Jin (2012) in the rare/weak regime, we extend their UPS procedure for variable selection to multiple testing. Under certain conditions, the new UPT procedure achieves the fastest convergence rate of marginal false non-discovery rates, while controlling the marginal false discovery rate at any designated level α\alpha asymptotically. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method.Comment: 27 page

Chen Zhong De Chi Bang, which won the second Mao Dun Literary Prize in 1985, is a contemporary Chinese novel written by Zhang Jie. As one of the literature works for foreigners to learn about China, it has been translated into two English versions, one by Gladys Yang and the other by Howard Goldblatt. Through carding relevant documents, it is found that researches on Chen Zhong De Chi Bang focus on artistic features, different versions and English versions’ reception while studies on its English versions are mainly from translator’s subjectivity, feminism and translation strategies three aspects. After analyzing previous studies, the thesis hopes to provide a new perspective on studying Chen Zhong De Chi Bang

Emerging from Anonymity: The First Generation of Writers of Songs and Drama in Mid-Ming Nanjing

    Get PDF
This article traces the first generation of writers of songs and drama in Nanjing who emerged from the anonymous context of early Ming court entertainment and established their name and reputation in the second half of the fifteenth century. These writers—Shi Zhong (1437-after 1516), Chen Duo (1454?-1507?), and Xu Lin (1462-1538)—represented a different mode of writing songs and drama. For them it was no longer a professional occupation, as in the case of the court performers, but became part of their cultural and social life. The extent to which our knowledge of these first generation qu writers depends on local sources and on acts of remembrance by later Nanjing authors is also examined
