“Thinking through Your Neighborhood “ a participation process to recover public space. Northern Seville city center

Urban renewal processes are essential for a better life in the city. Streets, squares and, ultimately, public spaces are where human interaction,, creativity, diversity and participation occur. Therefore, public spaces are where urban life unfolds, where contacts and connections are made and where the collaborative activities take place. The current urban model has pushed social interaction from public to private areas. This is mainly due to the presence of new elements which have gradually taken more and more space, such as cars, and also to the lack of equipment to empower public areas. Thus, La Revuelta Neighbourhood Association is promoting a participatory process to design our mobility and accessibility system. The main aim of this process is to joint- ly and democratically define and transform our neighbourhood regarding the use of our streets and public spaces. We believe that the role of public spaces should be recovered as a cornerstone in the revitalization of the city and its neigbourhoods, to encourage social interaction and to increase urban sociability and social cohe- sion.

AER tools for Communications and Debugging

Address-event-representation (AER) is a communications protocol for transferring spikes between bio-inspired chips. Such systems may consist of a hierarchical structure with several chips that transmit spikes among them in real time, while performing some processing. To develop and test AER based systems it is convenient to have a set of instruments that would allow to: generate AER streams, monitor the output produced by neural chips and modify the spike stream produced by an emitting chip to adapt it to the requirements of the receiving elements. In this paper we present a set of tools that implement these functions developed in the CAVIAR EU projectUnión Europea IST-2001-34124 (CAVIAR)Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC-2003-08164-C03-0

Introduction: Immune response stimulation may be an adjuvant to antimicrobial treatment. Here, we evaluated the impact of immune response modification by lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), combined with imipenem or ceftazidime, in murine models of peritoneal sepsis (PS) and pneumonia induced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Methods: The imipenem and ceftazidime-susceptible strain (Pa39) and imipenem and ceftazidime- resistant strain (Pa238) were used. Ceftazidime pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters were determined. The therapeutic efficacy and TNF- and IL-10 levels were determined in murine mod- els of PS and pneumonia induced by Pa39 and Pa238 and treated with LPC, imipenem or ceftazidime, alone or in combination. Results: In the PS model, LPC+ceftazidime reduced spleen and lung Pa238 concentrations (−3.45 and −3.56 log10 CFU/g; P < 0.05) to a greater extent than ceftazidime monotherapy, while LPC + imipenem maintained the imipenem efficacy (−1.66 and −1.45 log10 CFU/g; P > 0.05). In the pneumonia model, LPC + ceftazidime or LPC + imipenem reduced the lung Pa238 concentrations (−2.37 log10 CFU/g, P = 0.1, or −1.35 log10 CFU/g, P = 0.75). For Pa39, no statistically significant difference was observed in the PS and pneumonia models between combined therapy and monotherapy. Moreover, LPC + imipenem and LPC+ceftazidime significantly decreased and increased the TNF- and IL-10 levels, respectively, in com- parison with the untreated controls and monotherapies. Conclusions: These results demonstrate the impact of immune response modification by LPC plus antibiotics on the prognosis of infections induced by ceftazidime-resistant P. aeruginosa.introducción: La estimulación de la respuesta inmunitaria podría ser adyuvante al tratamiento antimi- crobiano.

Synergistic Activity of Niclosamide in Combination With Colistin Against Colistin-Susceptible and Colistin-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae

Colistin is among the few antibiotics effective against multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates. However, in the last few years, colistin-resistant A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae strains have emerged. Therefore, combination therapies, between colistin and other old drugs, restoring the activity of colistin are required. The main objective of this study was to analyse the activity of niclosamide, an anthelmintic drug, in combination with colistin against colistin-susceptible (Col-S) and colistin-resistant (Col-R) A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae. The MIC were determined by microdilution assay and the time-kill curves were performed. The zeta potential of Col-S and Col-R of A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae in presence of niclosamide was assessed. Niclosamide in combination with colistin showed improved activity against Col-S and Col-R A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae. Time-killing curves showed synergic activity between niclosamide and colistin against Col-S and Col-R A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae, especially when niclosamide or colistin was added for second time at 4 h of the 24 h killing curve. Col-R A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae in presence of niclosamide exhibited a greater negative charge (−34.95 ± 0.35 mV and −38.85 ± 0.92 mV; P < 0.05) than Col-R A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae in absence of niclosamide (−26.85 ± 3.65 mV and −35.27 ± 0.72 mV). These data suggest that niclosamide might be combined with colistin, being a potential alternative for treatment of Col-R Gram-negative bacilli infections.Instituto de Salud Carlos IIIProyectos de Investigacion en Salud PI16/01378Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad CP15/0135

New challenges in archaeopalynology: pollen analysis on roman bivalve shells from south-western Europe and North Africa

    Get PDF
The European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) is a native species that was consumed as a luxurious product by the Romans. In the Strait of Gibraltar area, between southwest Iberia and North Africa, numerous oyster shells have been found in Roman archaeological sites located in both, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The origin of these oysters is unknown, as so if theywere farmed or harvested in thewild and/or even imported for consumption. This study presents the results of pollen analysis of oyster shells from six archaeological sites in the Strait of Gibraltar area dated between the 1st and 6th centuries AD. This is the first time that such research is undertaken in the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa; the second worldwide for a discipline rarely known until now: conchopalynology. Our study suggests that differences observed in pollen spectra could be used to identify the origin of the consumed specimens, i.e. where they were grown or harvested, discriminating whether oyster shells originated from the Mediterranean Sea or the Atlantic Ocean coastline. This work was funded by the projects GARVM III (PID2019-108948RB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033), ARQUEOSTRA (FEDER-UCA18-104415), ARQUEOFISH (P18-FR-1483, PAIDI 2020), and GARVMTRANSFER (PDC2021-121356-I00)

The aim of this study was to analyze proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) for the possible presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). We studied three groups: Sub-Group 1 was composed of 10 patients with PVL, (6 of whom had developed OSCC); Sub-Group 2 comprised 5 patients with OSCC but no preceding PVL; and Sub-Group 3 were 5 controls with clinically normal oral mucosa. Oral biopsies from all cases were examined for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) by nested PCR. EBV was detected in 60% of Sub-Group 1 patients (PVL ) and in 40% of Sub-Group 2 (OSCC), but in 0% of SubGroup 3 (controls)
