<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Potential functional allele T/C single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of Interleukin 10 (IL-10) promoter -819 (rs1800871) has been implicated in gastric cancer risk. We aimed to explore the role of T/C SNP of IL-10 -819 in the susceptibility to gastric cancer through a systematic review and meta-analysis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Each initially included article was scored for quality appraisal. Desirable data were extracted and registered into databases. 11 studies were ultimately eligible for the meta-analysis of IL-10 -819 T/C SNP. We adopted the most probably appropriate genetic model (recessive model). Potential sources of heterogeneity were sought out via subgroup and sensitivity analyses, and publication biases were estimated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>IL-10 -819 TT genotype is associated with the overall reduced gastric cancer risk among Asians and even apparently observed among high quality subgroup Asians. IL-10-819 TT genotype is not statistically associated with the overall reduced gastric cancer susceptibility in persons with <it>H. pylori </it>infection compared with controls without <it>H. pylori </it>infection. IL-10 -819 TT genotype is reversely associated with diffuse-subtype risk but not in intestinal-subtype risk. IL-10 -819 TT genotype is not reversely associated with non-cardia or cardia subtype gastric cancer susceptibility.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>IL-10 -819 TT genotype seems to be more protective from gastric cancer in Asians. Whether IL-10 -819 TT genotype may be protective from gastric cancer susceptibility in persons infected with <it>H. pylori </it>or in diffuse-subtype cancer needs further exploring in the future well-designed high quality studies among different ethnicity populations. Direct sequencing should be more used in the future.</p

A novel pollution pattern: Highly chlorinated biphenyls retained in Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) and Whiskered tern (Chlidonias hybrida) from the Yangtze River Delta

AbstractContamination of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated diphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) and their methylated counterparts (MeO-PBDEs) were determined in Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) and Whiskered tern (Chlidonias hybrida) from two drinking water sources, e.g. Tianmu lake and East Tai lake in Yangtze River Delta, China. A novel PCBs contamination pattern was detected, including 11% and 6.9% highly chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs with eight to ten chlorines) in relation to total PCB concentrations in the Black-crowned night heron and Whiskered tern eggs, respectively. The predominating OCPs detected in the present study were 4,4′-DDE, with concentration range 280–650 ng g−1 lw in Black-crowned night heron and 240–480 ng g−1 lw in Whiskered tern, followed by β-HCH and Mirex. 6-MeO-BDE-90 and 6-MeO-BDE-99 are the two predominant congeners of MeO-PBDEs whereas 6-OH-BDE-47 contributes mostly to the OH-PBDEs in both species. Contamination level was considered as median or low level compared global data

Synergistic photoelectrochemical performance of La-doped RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti electrodes

Abstract(#br)RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti electrodes with low-content La-doping are prepared by thermal decomposition method. The effect of La doping on their electrochemical performance upon UV illumination are investigated. The doped electrodes show higher density of cracks and rugosity in microscale on the surface than the undoped ones. They also have a negative shift of the onset potential of oxygen evolution from 1.1 V to 1.0 V and higher current intensity under UV irradiation as well. Electrochemical impedence spectroscopy analysis demonstrates a better electrical conductivity of the doped film. Electron paramagnetic resonance results show that the obtained La-doped TiO 2 surface provides a higher density of oxygen vacancies. This anode also has 7.5% higher degradation rate of the methylene blue than La-undoped ones under UV irradiation. This is probably due to the increased surface rugosity and better electric conductivity, higher density of oxygen vacancies under UV irradiation by the doping of La ions

Variations in olfactory function among bipolar disorder patients with different episodes and subtypes

PurposeMost studies on olfactory function in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) have not distinguished between the different subtypes or between the acute phase (mania or depression) and euthymic state. In this study, we compared olfactory function among BD patients with different subtypes and episodes to explore the potential use of olfactory function as a biomarker for the early identification of BD.Patients and methodsThe study sample consisted of 117 BD patients who were hospitalized between April 2019 and June 2019, and 47 healthy volunteers as controls. The BD patients were divided into a bipolar I disorder (BD I) (n = 86) and bipolar II disorder (BD II) group (n = 31) according to the different subtypes, and divided into depressive BD (n = 36), manic BD (n = 44), or euthymic BD (n = 37) groups according to the types of episodes they experienced. We assessed olfactory sensitivity (OS) and olfactory identification (OI) via the Sniffin’ Sticks test and used the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) and Young Manic Rating Scale (YMRS) to evaluate BD characteristics among all subjects.ResultsCompared with controls, the participants with BD showed decreased OS and OI. We found statistically significant differences in OS and OI between the BD I group and controls, as well as differences in OS between the BD I and BD II group. Least-significant difference multiple comparisons revealed statistically significant differences in OS between the depressive BD group, manic BD group and controls and also between the manic BD and euthymic BD group. OI was positively correlated with the YMRS score in the BD I group and OS was negatively correlated with the HAMD score in the BD II group.ConclusionThis may be the first study to compare olfactory function in patients with BD I vs. BD II via pairwise comparisons. Our findings suggest that OS may have potential as a biomarker for distinguishing the different subtypes of BD and as a state-related biomarker for differentiating the acute phase from the euthymic state of BD. However, further prospective research is warranted

Czochralski technique growth of pure and rare-earth-doped SrWO 4 crystals

Abstract Pure and rare-earth (Nd 3+ , Tm 3+ and Er 3+ )-doped strontium tungstates of good optical quality with sizes of about f20 mm  50 mm were grown successfully by the Czochralski technique. The (0 0 1) orientation was found to be the favorable direction for crystal growth. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) of pure strontium tungstate were measured. The concentrations of Nd 3+ , Tm 3+ and Er 3+ were measured and their segregation coefficients were also calculated. The absorption and emission spectra of rare-earth-doped crystals as a function of the s and p polarizations were presented and discussed. Favorable values of the absorption cross section centered at about 800 nm suggest that Nd 3+ -and Tm 3+ -doped strontium tungstates are promising candidates for laser diode (LD) pumping.

Despite the importance of grapevine cultivation in human history and the economic values of cultivar improvement, large-scale genomic variation data are lacking. Here the authors resequence 472 Vitis accessions and use the identified genetic variations for domestication history, demography, and GWAS analyses
