    Topological structure bifurcation of temperature field of deformable drop in Marangoni migration

    AbstractThe unsteady processes of the Marangoni migration of deformable liquid drops are simulated numerically in a wider range of Marangoni number (up to Ma = 500) in the present work. A steady terminal state can always be reached, and the scaled terminal velocity is a monotonic function decreasing with increasing Marangoni number, which is generally in agreement with corresponding experimental data. The topological structure of flow field in the steady terminal state does not change as the Marangoni number increases, while bifurcation of the topological structure of temperature field occurs twice at two corresponding critical Marangoni numbers. A third critical value of Marangoni number also exists, beyond which the coldest point jumps from the rear stagnation to inside the drop though the topological structure of the temperature field does not change. It is found that the inner and outer thermal boundary layers may exist along the interface both inside and outside the drop if Ma > 70. But the thickness decreases with increasing Marangoni number more slowly than the prediction of potential flow at large Marangoni and Reynolds numbers

    A novel pollution pattern: Highly chlorinated biphenyls retained in Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) and Whiskered tern (Chlidonias hybrida) from the Yangtze River Delta

    AbstractContamination of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated diphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) and their methylated counterparts (MeO-PBDEs) were determined in Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) and Whiskered tern (Chlidonias hybrida) from two drinking water sources, e.g. Tianmu lake and East Tai lake in Yangtze River Delta, China. A novel PCBs contamination pattern was detected, including 11% and 6.9% highly chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs with eight to ten chlorines) in relation to total PCB concentrations in the Black-crowned night heron and Whiskered tern eggs, respectively. The predominating OCPs detected in the present study were 4,4′-DDE, with concentration range 280–650 ng g−1 lw in Black-crowned night heron and 240–480 ng g−1 lw in Whiskered tern, followed by β-HCH and Mirex. 6-MeO-BDE-90 and 6-MeO-BDE-99 are the two predominant congeners of MeO-PBDEs whereas 6-OH-BDE-47 contributes mostly to the OH-PBDEs in both species.     Source Apportionment of Gaseous and Particulate PAHs from Traffic Emission Using Tunnel Measurements in Shanghai, China

    Understanding sources and contributions of gaseous and particulate PAHs from traffic-related pollution can provide valuable information for alleviating air contamination from traffic in urban areas. On-road sampling campaigns were comprehensively conducted during 2011–2012 in an urban tunnel of Shanghai, China. 2–3 rings PAHs were abundant in the tunnel\u27s gas and particle phases. Diagnostic ratios of PAHs were statistically described; several were significantly different between the gas and particle phases. Principal component analysis (PCA), positive matrix factorization (PMF), bivariate correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA) were applied to apportion sources of gaseous and particulate PAHs in the tunnel. Main sources of the gaseous PAHs included evaporative emission of fuel, high-temperature and low-temperature combustion of fuel, accounting for 50–51%, 30–36% and 13–20%, respectively. Unburned fuel particles (56.4–78.3%), high-temperature combustion of fuel (9.5–26.1%) and gas-to-particle condensation (12.2–17.5%) were major contributors to the particulate PAHs. The result reflected, to a large extent, PAH emissions from the urban traffic of Shanghai. Improving fuel efficiency of local vehicles will greatly reduce contribution of traffic emission to atmospheric PAHs in urban areas. Source apportionment of PM10 mass was also performed based on the organic component data. The results showed that high-temperature combustion of fuel and gas-to-particle condensation contributed to 15–18% and 7–8% of PM10 mass, respectively, but 55–57% of the particle mass was left unexplained. Although the results from the PCA and PMF models were comparable, the PMF method is recommended for source apportionment of PAHs in real traffic conditions. In addition, the combination of multivariate statistical method and bivariate correlation analysis is a useful tool to comprehensively assess sources of PAHs

    Turbulent flame propagation with pressure oscillation in the end gas region of confined combustion chamber equipped with different perforated plates

    Experiments were conducted in a newly designed constant volume combustion chamber with a perforated plate by varying the initial conditions. Hydrogen-air mixtures were used and the turbulent flame, shock wave, and the processes of flame-shock interactions were tracked via high-speed Schlieren photography. The effects of hole size and porosities on flame and shock wave propagation, intensity of the shock wave and pressure oscillation in closed combustion chamber were analyzed in detail. The effect of interactions between the turbulent flame and reflected shock or acoustic wave on the turbulent flame propagation was comprehensively studied during the present experiment. The results demonstrated that flame front propagation velocity and pressure oscillation strongly depend on the hole size and porosities of the perforated plate. The flame front propagation velocity in the end gas region increases as hole size increases and porosity decreases. The flame front propagation intensity in the end region of a confined space is strongly relevant to two competing effects: the initial turbulent formation and turbulent flame development. The experimental results indicated that an oscillating flame is associated with both the reflected shock wave and the acoustic wave. Meanwhile, different turbulent flame propagations and combustion modes were observed

    Fixed and mobile energy storage coordination optimization method for enhancing photovoltaic integration capacity considering voltage offset

    Mobile energy storage has the characteristics of strong flexibility, wide application, etc., with fixed energy storage can effectively deal with the future large-scale photovoltaic as well as electric vehicles and other fluctuating load access to the grid resulting in the imbalance of supply and demand. To this end, this paper proposes a coordinated two-layer optimization strategy for fixed and mobile energy storage that takes into account voltage offsets, in the context of improving the demand for local PV consumption. Among them, the upper layer optimization model takes into account the minimum operating cost of fixed and mobile energy storage, and the lower layer optimization model minimizes the voltage offset through the 24-h optimal scheduling of fixed and mobile energy storage in order to improve the in-situ PV consumption capacity. In addition, considering the multidimensional nonlinear characteristics of the model, the interaction force of particles in the Universe is introduced, and the hybrid particle swarm-gravitational search algorithm (PSO-GSA) is proposed to solve the model, which is a combination of the individual optimization of the particle swarm algorithm and the local search capability of the gravitational search algorithm, which improves the algorithm’s optimization accuracy. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model and method are verified by simulation analysis with IEEE 33 nodes
