SDSS J163459.82+204936.0: A Ringed Infrared-Luminous Quasar with Outflows in both Absorption and Emission Lines

SDSS J1634+2049 is a local (z = 0.1293) infrared-luminous quasar with LIR= 10^11.91 Lsun. We present a detailed multiwavelength study of both the host galaxy and the nucleus. The host galaxy demonstrates violent, obscured star formation activities with SFR ~ 140 Msun yr^-1, estimated from either the PAH emission or IR luminosity. The optical to NIR spectra exhibit a blueshifted narrow cuspy component in Hb, HeI5876,10830 and other emission lines consistently with an offset velocity of ~900 km/s, as well as additional blueshifting phenomena in high-ionization lines , while there exist blueshifted broad absorption lines (BALs) in NaID and HeI*3889,10830, indicative of the AGN outflows producing BALs and emission lines. Constrained mutually by the several BALs with CLOUDY, the physical properties of the absorption-line outflow are derived as follows: 10^4 < n_H <= 10^5 cm^-3, 10^-1.3 <= U <= 10^-0.7 and 10^22.5<= N_H <= 10^22.9 cm^-2 , similar to those derived for the emission-line outflows. The similarity suggests a common origin. Taking advantages of both the absorption lines and outflowing emission lines, we find that the outflow gas is located at a distance of 48 - 65 pc from the nucleus, and that the kinetic luminosity of the outflow is 10^44-10^46 erg s^-1. J1634+2049 has a off-centered galactic ring on the scale of ~ 30 kpc that is proved to be formed by a recent head-on collision by a nearby galaxy. Thus this quasar is a valuable object in the transitional phase emerging out of dust enshrouding as depicted by the co-evolution scenario.Comment: 13 figures, 6 tables; accepted for publication in Ap

Objective: This phase Ia study was designed to assess the pharmacokinetic (PK) characters of free vincristine (F-VCR, refer to as non-liposomal VCR and VCR released from liposome) and total vincristine (T-VCR, the sum of both liposomal VCR and F-VCR), urinary excretion and safety of intravenous administration of vincristine sulfate liposomes injection (VSLI) in Chinese patients with malignant lymphoma and compare the results with those for conventional vincristine sulfate injection (VSI).Methods: In the phase Ia, randomized, open-label, two sequence cross-over study, patients from one group were exposed to treatment 1 including cytoxan (cyclophosphamide power injection), hydroxyrubicin (adriamycin power injection), oncovin (VSI), and prednisone tablets (standard CHOP scheme) before crossed over to treatment 2 (modified CHOP scheme in which VSI was replaced with VSLI). Patients from another group received treatments in reverse order. Results: In this phase Ia study, a total of eight subjects participated. VCR elimination from the circulation after injection of VSLI was characterized by a significantly increased maximum concentration (Cmax, 86.6 ng/mL) and plasma area under the plasma concentration-time curve from zero to infinity (AUC0-Inf, 222.1 ng/mL h), markedly decreased distribution volume (Vz, 224.1 L) and plasma clearance (CL, 8.9 L/h) compared to lower Cmax (26.6 ng/mL) and AUC0-Inf (95.1 ng/mL h), larger Vz (688.8 L) and CL (22.1 L/h) for VSI. The small proportion of F-VCR following infusion of VSLI in circulation was reflected by very low Cmax (1.8 ng/mL) and AUC0-Inf (50.5 ng/mL h). Less than 3% of the administered dose of VSLI was excreted in urine and the extent was similar to that for VSI. The elimination percentage of 40–21–14% for VSI changed to 6.2–24–39% for VSLI at intervals of 0–5, 5–13 and 13–25 h, respectively. Significant difference of toxicity between VSLI and VSI was not observed. Conclusion: VSLI exhibits higher AUC0-Inf of T-VCR, lower CL and Vz compared with VSI. VSLI was well tolerated, maybe due to the markedly decreasing AUC0-Inf of F-VCR. The majority of VCR was enveloped in liposome and VCR was released gradually from liposome following injection of VSLI. Liposomal encapsulation of VCR does not alter the route and extent of VCR excretion in urine

Optical effects of spin currents in semiconductors

A spin current has novel linear and second-order nonlinear optical effects due to its symmetry properties. With the symmetry analysis and the eight-band microscopic calculation we have systematically investigated the interaction between a spin current and a polarized light beam (or the "photon spin current") in direct-gap semiconductors. This interaction is rooted in the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in valence bands and does not rely on the Rashba or Dresselhaus effect. The light-spin current interaction results in an optical birefringence effect of the spin current. The symmetry analysis indicates that in a semiconductor with inversion symmetry, the linear birefringence effect vanishes and only the circular birefringence effect exists. The circular birefringence effect is similar to the Faraday rotation in magneto-optics but involves no net magnetization nor breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Moreover, a spin current can induce the second-order nonlinear optical processes due to the inversion-symmetry breaking. These findings form a basis of measuring a pure spin current where and when it flows with the standard optical spectroscopy, which may provide a toolbox to explore a wealth of physics connecting the spintronics and photonics.Comment: 16 pages, 7 fig

The effects of fermentation and adsorption using lactic acid bacteria culture broth on the feed quality of rice straw

To improve the nutritional value and the palatability of air-dried rice straw, culture broth of the lactic acid bacteria community SFC-2 was used to examine the effects of two different treatments, fermentation and adsorption. Air-dried and chopped rice straw was treated with either fermentation for 30 d after adding 1.5 L nutrient solution (50 mL inocula L–1, 1.2×1012 CFU mL–1 inocula) kg–1 straw dry matter, or spraying a large amount of culture broth (1.5 L kg–1 straw dry matter, 1.5×1011 CFU mL–1 culture broth) on the straw and allowing it to adsorb for 30 min. The feed quality and aerobic stability of the resulting forage were examined. Both treatments improved the feed quality of rice straw, and adsorption was better than fermentation for preserving nutrients and improving digestibility, as evidenced by higher dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) concentrations, lower neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and NH3-N concentrations, as well as higher lactic acid production and in vitro digestibility of DM (IVDMD). The aerobic stability of the adsorbed straw and the fermented straw was 392 and 480 h, respectively. After being exposed to air, chemical components and microbial community of the fermented straw were more stable than the adsorbed straw

PurposePheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PCC/PGL; collectively known as PPGL) can be driven by germline and somatic mutations in susceptibility genes. We aimed to investigate the mutation profile and clinical features of pathogenic genes in highly genetically heterogeneous PPGL and to preliminary explore molecular therapeutic targets in PPGL.MethodsWe established a panel of 260 genes, including susceptibility genes of PPGL and other important tumorigenic genes to sequence 107 PPGL tissues.ResultsOverall, 608 genomic mutations were identified in 107 PPGL tissues. Almost 57% of PPGL tissue samples exhibited pathogenic mutations, and the most frequently mutated gene was SDHB (15/107, 14%). SDHB and HRAS were the most commonly mutated genes in germline-mutated PPGL (25/107, 23%) and nongermline-mutated PPGL (36/107, 34%), respectively. In addition, novel pathogenic mutations were detected in sporadic PPGL. PPGL with mutations in the hypoxia pathway had an earlier onset and higher norepinephrine level than those in the kinase pathway. Receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK; 22%, 24/107), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK; 14%, 15/107), and tyrosine kinase (TK; 2%, 2/107) pathways were the most frequently mutated pathways in PPGL.ConclusionOur results provided the genetic mutation profile in PPGL tissues. Genetic mutations in PPGL were mainly concentrated in the RTK, TK, and MAPK pathways, suggesting potential molecular therapeutic targets for PPGL

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors with certain comorbidities had lower quality of life (QOL). This study was performed to investigate the prevalence of comorbidities and the association between comorbidities and the QOL among Chinese colorectal cancer survivors (CCS). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,398 CCS between April and July 2013 in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China. All the participants were asked to complete a simplified Chinese version of the European Organization for Research and Treatment quality of life version 3 questionnaire and questions on sociodemographic characteristics and comorbidities. In order to mitigate the bias caused by confounding factors, multiple linear regression models were employed to calculate the adjusted means of QOL scores. RESULTS: The proportion of participants without any comorbidity was only 20.2%. The CCS with comorbidities except hypertension scored significantly lower on the European Organization for Research and Treatment quality of life version 3 questionnaire global health and functioning scales and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General scales but higher on the European Organization for Research and Treatment quality of life version 3 questionnaire symptom scores, indicating that they had poorer QOL, particularly for cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, and musculoskeletal diseases. CONCLUSION: There exists a significant association between comorbidities and QOL among Chinese CCS, and participants with comorbidities generally reported lower QOL scores. These findings suggested comprehensive care for CCS
