    Quantification of Cross-coupling and Motion Feedthrough for Multiaxis Controllers Used in an Air Combat Flying Task

    A real-time piloted simulation of an air-to-air combat flying task using a wings-level-turn aircraft and various novel controllers was conducted. One objective is to quantify how the pilot interacts with the controllers and control modes, including: (1) controller versus aircraft response; (2) proprioceptive cross-coupling among axes of the controllers; and (3) biodynamic cross-coupling between the aircraft motions and the controllers. In order to aid in identifying the items listed above, both the target aircraft and the large amplitude multimode aerospace research simulator (LAMARS) motion system were distributed with quasi-random sums-of-sinusoids. Since the disturbances were separated in frequency, spectral analysis techniques were used to identify the three items listed. The results of the spectral analysis of controller motions from the two-axis side stick, a twist grip mounted on the side stick, a thumb button mounted on the side stick, and conventional rudder pedals are presented. Conclusions and recommendations for further research are also presented

The effector is comprised of a pair of C-shaped members that are oriented so as to face each other. Working in concert, the C-shaped members are able to hold a bar such as a chainsaw handle.     A prosthetic device has been developed for below-the-elbow amputees. The device consists of a cuff, a stem, a housing, two hook-like fingers, an elastic band for holding the fingers together, and a brace. The fingers are pivotally mounted on a housing that is secured to the amputee's upper arm with the brace. The stem, which also contains a cam, is rotationally mounted within the housing and is secured to the cuff, which fits over the amputee's stump. By rotating the cammed stem between the fingers with the lower arm, the amputee can open and close the fingers

    Controllability analysis of multi objective control systems

    The performance requirements stated in project specifications often comprise conflicting objectives. These objectives may further be a complex mix of steady state and dynamic performance. Control devices such as solenoid actuators are often chosen purely on steady state force characteristics, due to the difficulty of appraising the conflicting and generally non-linear nature of the performance objectives. This can have ramifications in terms not only of the actuator performance, but also in the overall controllability of the system when closed-loop control is implemented. An example automotive application examining the multi objective controllability of electronically actuated valves is presented. Multi objective evolutionary techniques are utilised to derive the optimal force-displacement characteristics and also dynamic characteristics of the desired actuator under the constraint of design performance criteria. The selected actuator is then assessed for its controllability and dynamic performance

    Prosthetic helping hand

    A prosthetic device for below-the-elbow amputees, having a C-shaped clamping mechanism for grasping cylindrical objects, is described. The clamping mechanism is pivotally mounted to a cuff that fits on the amputee's lower arm. The present invention is utilized by placing an arm that has been amputated below the elbow into the cuff. The clamping mechanism then serves as a hand whenever it becomes necessary for the amputee to grasp a cylindrical object such as a handle, a bar, a rod, etc. To grasp the cylindrical object, the object is jammed against the opening in the C-shaped spring, causing the spring to open, the object to pass to the center of the spring, and the spring to snap shut behind the object. Various sizes of clamping mechanisms can be provided and easily interchanged to accommodate a variety of diameters. With the extension that pivots and rotates, the clamping mechanism can be used in a variety of orientations. Thus, this invention provides the amputee with a clamping mechanism that can be used to perform a number of tasks

DOI:10.1088/1367-2630/10/3/033012An indium tin oxide-clad liquid crystal filled Fabry–Perot etalon structure has been shown to act as an effective narrow-band filter at terahertz frequencies. An applied voltage, which controls the alignment of the nematic liquid crystal allows the refractive index of the core to be tuned. Transmission spectra show well-defined resonant peaks which shift in position when the alignment is changed from planar to homeotropic. The measured transmission spectra agree well with the results of a multilayer optics model and the birefringence of the liquid crystals over this frequency range are determined as Δn = 0.15(± 0.01) and Δn = 0.08(± 0.01) for E7 and ZLI 2293, respectively

    The paper is concerned with the design of medium-stroke variable reluctance actuators that exploit the tangential component of force. A method of compensating for the roll-off in force as the stator and armature come into full alignment is presented, and the scope which this offers to tailor the force-displacement characteristic to meet the demands of a particular application is illustrated by means of a case study. The case study includes finite element analysis and experimental measurements on an actuator having a stroke of 8 mm and a rated force capability of 60 N

    A Review of the Properties of Nb3Sn and Their Variation with A15 Composition, Morphology and Strain State

    This article gives an overview of the available literature on simplified, well defined (quasi-)homogeneous laboratory samples. After more than 50 years of research on superconductivity in Nb3Sn, a significant amount of results are available, but these are scattered over a multitude of publications. Two reviews exist on the basic properties of A15 materials in general, but no specific review for Nb3Sn is available. This article is intended to provide such an overview. It starts with a basic description of the Niobium-Tin intermetallic. After this it maps the influence of Sn content on the the electron-phonon interaction strength and on the field-temperature phase boundary. The literature on the influence of Cu, Ti and Ta additions will then be briefly summarized. This is followed by a review on the effects of grain size and strain.     Clostridium perfringens α-toxin interaction with red cells and model membranes.

    The effects of Clostridium perfringens α-toxin on host cells have previously been studied extensively but the biophysical processes associated with toxicity are poorly understood. The work reported here shows that the initial interaction between the toxin and lipid membrane leads to measurable changes in the physical properties and morphology of the membrane. A Langmuir monolayer technique was used to assess the response of different lipid species to toxin. Sphingomyelin and unsaturated phosphatidylcholine showed the highest susceptibility to toxin lypolitic action, with a two stage response to the toxin (an initial, rapid hydrolysis stage followed by the insertion and/or reorganisation of material in the monolayer). Fluorescence confocal microscopy on unsaturated phosphatidylcholine vesicles shows that the toxin initially aggregates at discrete sites followed by the formation of localised "droplets" accumulating the hydrolysis products. This process is accompanied by local increases in the membrane dipole potential by about 50 (±42) mV. In contrast, red blood cells incubated with the toxin suffered a decrease of the membrane dipole potential by 50 (±40) mV in areas of high toxin activity (equivalent to a change in electric field strength of 10(7) V m(-1)) which is sufficient to affect the functioning of the cell membrane. Changes in erythrocyte morphology caused by the toxin are presented, and the early stages of interaction between toxin and membrane are characterised using thermal shape fluctuation analysis of red cells which revealed two distinct regimes of membrane-toxin interaction.Royal Society University Research Fellowshi

    Comparisons of SiO Maser and Long-Period Variable Positions in the Aquarii and Omicron Ceti Binary Systems

    We have determined that the absolute position of the centroid of SiO maser-emitting spots toward both R A~r ~nd o Cet are coincident with the position of the long-period variables (LPVs) in these binary systems to within the errors of measurement. The SiO positions were determined with the Hat Creek interferometer while the LPV positions were determined with the 8 inch (20 em) transit circle of the US Naval Observatory: These results contradict an earlier report of a circumbinary SiO maser far removed from the LPV in the R Aqr binary system, and we suggest statistical reasons for the discrepancy. We present high-resolution spectra of both sources and discuss possible models
