Boosting Backward Search Throughput for FM-Index Using a Compressed Encoding

    Get PDF
The rapid development of DNA sequencing technologies has demanded for com- pressed data structures supporting fast pattern matching queries. FM-index is a widely-used compressed data structure that also supports fast pattern matching queries. It is common for the exact matching algorithm to be memory bound, resulting in poor performance. Searching several symbols in a single step improves data locality, although the memory bandwidth requirements remains the same. We propose a new data-layout of FM-index, called Split bit-vector, that compacts all data needed to search k symbols in a single step (k-step), reducing both memory movement and computing requirements at the cost of increasing memory footprint.Universidad de Málaga. A characteristic of concurrent engineering is the intensive information interchange between areas that are involved through the product life cycle. Shared information structures to integrate different software applications have become necessary to support effectively the interchange of information. While . much work has been done into the concepts of Product and Manufacturing Models, there is a need to make them able to support Assembly related activities. The research reported in this thesis explores and defines the structures of a Product Model and. a Manufacturing Model to support assembly related information. These information models support the product development process, especially during the early stages of the product life cycle. The structures defined for the models allow information interactions between them and with application software; these interactions are essential to support an effective concurrent environment. The Product Model is a source and repository of the product information, whilst the Manufacturing Model holds information about the manufacturing processes and resources of an enterprise. A combination of methods was proposed in order to define the structure for the information models. An experimental software system was created and used to show that the structure defined for the Product Model and the Manufacturing Model can support· a range of assembly-related software applications through the concurrent development of the product, system and process, from conceptual design through to planning. The applications implemented in the experimental system were Design for Assembly and Assembly Process Planning. The real data used for the tests was obtained from an industrial collaborator who manufactures large electrical machines. This research contributes to the understanding of. the general structural requirements of the decision support systems based on information models, and to the integration of Design for Assembly and Assembly Process Planning

In order to compare the collections, an analysis was performed of physics textbooks of the 19th century as well as of instruments in research laboratories, and modern school laboratories. For this purpose a classification scheme, based on didactic criteria, was applied. In this way, we obtained a profile for each collection, which highlights the existence of a set of characteristic patterns. The results of our study contribute to a deeper knowledge of how physics was taught in the past, and especially in Spain in the 19th century

In this article we make a review of the concept of resilience and its main implications for practice. We carried out an analysis of different intervention programs for parents with preadolescent and adolescent children to broaden our understanding about the practical implications of this concept. Given the absence of interventions based on promoting parental resilience, we present a program for the prevention and promotion of parental competencies to support positive parenting and promote in parents an improvement in their level of resilience and emotional well-being. The main objectives of this program are: the development of strategies to manage the adverse situations that arise in the daily life related to the task of educating children; to promote parental skills that enable families to effectively respond to children's behavioral problems, to facilitate good emotional management of behavior problems, and to be able to recover from the impact caused. The program follows an experiential methodology, families are active agents in the process of change, and is accompanied by a rigorous implementation and evaluation to analyze the changes that occur as the intervention progresses.

The aim of this work is to show the evolution of the relief that shapes the unit of Mounts of Malaga, revising briefly its geological evolution (until today) and the climatic, hydrographic, edaphic and human factors which act on it. For this purpose, materials such as graphics, aerials and “in situ” photographies and specific cartographies have been used. The given conclusions prove the complexity of the orographic range and its dynamism throughout time (both in the past and in the future) allowing a continuous evolution of its components (hillsides, soil, vegetation …) and even, regressions of these (as it happens in the case of fluvial nets, which may disappear generating paleochannels which are difficult to follow in plain sight

γ-Al2O3 as acid catalyst for dehydration of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Currently, the search and development of sustainable feedstocks for chemicals derived from petrol have gained worldwide attraction because of the instability of the price of crude oil, the reduction of fossil oil reserves, and the environmental concerns associated to the greenhouse effect caused by CO2 emissions, being biomass one of the world’s most important renewable carbon sources. The major component of plant-derived biomass are carbohydrates, being of great importance to develop efficient and green approaches to their valorization by conversion into high value-added products. Thus, glucose can be transformed by dehydration into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which is a versatile and key intermediate for the production of a wide variety of biobased chemicals and it is attracting much attention in biofuels and chemical industry. Different catalytic systems have been evaluated for HMF production from C6 carbohydrates as glucose, mostly based on heterogeneous catalysis as alternative to the use of liquid mineral acids. On the other hand, the high surface area, large pore size and thermal and hydrothermal stabilities of some mesoporous solids make them suitable for many catalytic processes. In the present work, the dehydration of glucose to HMF has been evaluated by using different mesoporous γ-Al2O3 with acid, neutral or basic character, in a biphasic water–MIBK solvent system to avoid the HMF degradation and its possible reaction with the intermediates from glucose to give soluble polymers and humins or acetalization with glucose. Different experimental parameters, such as reaction temperature and time, as well as the addition of inorganic salts have been studied in order to reach the maximum HMF yield.Universidad de Málaga. Valorization of carbohydrates: dehydration of sorbitol to isosorbide in the presence of acidic zeolites

Currently, the growing interest in the use of biomass as a renewable and sustainable raw material for the production of energy, chemicals and biofuels is driving the development of new catalytic processes and technologies for its conversion. In this context, the transformation of lignocellulosic biomass can lead to a variety of platform chemicals, with a broad spectrum of applications. Sorbitol is one of the useful biomass-derived chemicals that is obtained by catalytic hydrogenation of glucose, which subsequent dehydration and intramolecular cyclization in acid medium gives rise to the formation of isosorbide. This is a high value-added chemical widely used as intermediate in the pharmaceutical industry, additive polymers such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and production of biodegradable polymers. Mineral acids such as sulphuric and hydrochloric acids have efficient catalytic properties for dehydration of sorbitol. However, the well-known drawbacks associated to homogeneous catalysis have promoted the studies of heterogeneous catalytic processes. Thus, solid acid catalysts such as zeolites, tetravalent metal phosphates and sulfated copper oxide have been reported as alternative solid catalysts. Nevertheless, sometimes, drastic experimental conditions are required to reach a high catalytic activity. In the present work, different commercial zeolites, in their protonic form, have been evaluated as acid solid catalysts for sorbitol dehydration, and several experimental variables have been optimizedUniversidad de Málaga.
