Development of a new software application for supporting research of thermo-mechanical behavior of agri-food and forest products

Development of applications and services conforming to recent standards and perspectives of ICT is important for increasing productivity in agri-food and forestry sectors to deliver desired quantities of safe and quality products to end-users. Therefore a field of study combining two national curricula: informatics and agricultural engineering was developed by the Department of Applied Informatics of the Poznan University of Life Sciences. The scope of studies corresponds to the area of research conducted in the Department and focuses on development of Web-based advisory systems for agriculture and information systems supporting research in the agri-bio-engineering. In the paper two exemplary systems are presented. They support analysis of thermo-mechanical behavior of agri-food and forest products subjected to heating, cooling, drying and storing operations. Development of the systems resulted in a significant increase in accuracy and efficiency of estimating properties of biomaterials and in more accurate predictions of the processes investigated.</jats:p

Melatonin and cortisol profiles in patients with pituitary tumors

The optic tract section at the optic chiasm is expected to disturb the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) rhythm, circadian rhythm and melatonin secretion rhythms in humans, although detailed studies have never been conducted. The aim of this paper was to describe melatonin and cortisol profiles in patients with a pituitary tumor exerting optic chiasm compression. Six patients with pituitary tumors of different size, four of whom had significant optic chiasm compression, were examined. In each brain, MRI, an ophthalmological examination including the vision field and laboratory tests were performed. Melatonin and cortisol concentrations were measured at 22:00h, 02:00h, 06:00h, and 10:00h in patients lying in a dark, isolated room. One of the four cases with significant optic chiasm compression presented a flattened melatonin rhythm. The melatonin rhythm was also disturbed in one patient without optic chiasm compression. Larger tumors may play a role in the destruction of neurons connecting the retina with the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and breaking of basic way for inhibiting effect to the SCN from the retina

Seria 1, nr 271). Nowe wydanie Vade-mecum jest wynikiem prowadzonej już od dawna przez Józefa Ferta pracy badawczej zarówno nad tekstem tego zbioru lirycznego, jak i nad jego problematyką. Oczywiście edytor korzystał z dotychczasowych osiągnięć badaczy Vade-mecum, przede wszystkim zaś z podobizny autografu wydanej przez Wacława Borowego w r. 1947 oraz z czterech wydań Juliusza Wiktora Gomulickiego, zwłaszcza zaś tych, które się znalazły w Norwida Dziełach zebranych (t. 1, 2) z r. 1966 oraz w Pismach wszystkich (t. 2) z r. 19712. J. Fert − co trzeba podkreślić z uznaniem − jest w nieustannym dialogu z literaturą przedmiotu, która przecież rośnie z roku na rok. O jego erudycji informuje dołączony do Wstępu wydania Wybór opracowań (łącznie ze spisem wziętych pod uwagę edycji), choć − jak się zdaje − należałoby dla zainteresowanego czytelnika sporządzić ponadto w tej bibliografii osobny dział wcale licznych interpretacji poszczególnych utworów wchodzących w skład VM [...]
