Segmentation of the C57BL/6J mouse cerebellum in magnetic resonance images
The C57BL mouse is the centerpiece of efforts to use gene-targeting technology to understand cerebellar pathology, thus creating a need for a detailed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) atlas of the cerebellum of this strain. In this study we present a methodology for systematic delineation of the vermal and hemispheric lobules of the C57BL/6J mouse cerebellum in magnetic resonance images. We have successfully delineated 38 cerebellar and cerebellar-related structures. The higher signal-to-noise ratio achieved by group averaging facilitated the identification of anatomical structures. In addition, we have calculated average region volumes and created probabilistic maps for each structure. The segmentation method and the probabilistic maps we have created will provide a foundation for future studies of cerebellar disorders using transgenic mouse models
Rotation of planet-harbouring stars
The rotation rate of a star has important implications for the detectability,
characterisation and stability of any planets that may be orbiting it. This
chapter gives a brief overview of stellar rotation before describing the
methods used to measure the rotation periods of planet host stars, the factors
affecting the evolution of a star's rotation rate, stellar age estimates based
on rotation, and an overview of the observed trends in the rotation properties

Over 50% of the global population now lives in urban areas. Over the past century, urban areas have expanded at a
greater rate than population growth, increasing requirements
for resources and producing greater impacts on the natural
environment. Urban societies have also changed, with a
greater diversity of cultures, high population densities, and
rising demand for services, resulting in an increasing
complexity of human urban systems. Urban systems influence
and are influenced by infrastructure systems, which
affect the design and management of the built, social, and
natural environments, including future infrastructure decisions
Carbon Nanotube Based Magnetic Tunnel Junctions
Spin-coherent quantum transport in carbon nanotube magnetic tunnel junctions
was investigated theoretically. A spin-valve effect is found for metallic,
armchair tubes, with a magneto-conductance ratio ranging up to 20%. Because of
the finite length of the nanotube junctions, transport is dominated by resonant
transmission. The magnetic tunnel junctions are found to have distinctly
different transport behavior depending on whether or not the length of the
tubes is commensurate with a 3N+1 rule, with N the number of basic carbon

No more 'business as usual' with audit and feedback interventions: towards an agenda for a reinvigorated intervention
Background: Audit and feedback interventions in healthcare have been found to be effective, but there has been little progress with respect to understanding their mechanisms of action or identifying their key ‘active ingredients.’
Discussion: Given the increasing use of audit and feedback to improve quality of care, it is imperative to focus further research on understanding how and when it works best. In this paper, we argue that continuing the ‘business as usual’ approach to evaluating two-arm trials of audit and feedback interventions against usual care for common problems and settings is unlikely to contribute new generalizable findings. Future audit and feedback trials should incorporate evidence- and theory-based best practices, and address known gaps in the literature.
Summary: We offer an agenda for high-priority research topics for implementation researchers that focuses on reviewing best practices for designing audit and feedback interventions to optimize effectiveness
Therapy Insight: Parenteral Estrogen treatment for Prostate Cancer—a new dawn for an old therapy
Oral estrogens were the treatment of choice for carcinoma of the prostate for over four decades, but were abandoned because of an excess of cardiovascular and thromboembolic toxicity. It is now recognized that most of this toxicity is related to the first pass portal circulation, which upregulates the hepatic metabolism of hormones, lipids and coagulation proteins. Most of this toxicity can be avoided by parenteral (intramuscular or transdermal) estrogen administration, which avoids hepatic enzyme induction. It also seems that a short-term but modest increase in cardiovascular morbidity (but not mortality) is compensated for by a long-term cardioprotective benefit, which accrues progressively as vascular remodeling develops over time. Parenteral estrogen therapy has the advantage of giving protection against the effects of andropause (similar to the female menopause), which are induced by conventional androgen suppression and include osteoporotic fracture, hot flashes, asthenia and cognitive dysfunction. In addition, parenteral estrogen therapy is significantly cheaper than contemporary endocrine therapy, with substantive economic implications for health providers
