    Noncompliance

    Among challenging behavior, noncompliance has the unique characteristic of describing the failure to engage in, or the absence of, a specific behavior (i.e., compliance). Recognizing that the term “compliance” has negative connotations for many, we propose an alternative term, “cooperation,” to describe the behavior expected of children with autism who exhibit noncompliance. This chapter initially reviews the functional behavior assessment of noncompliance using indirect assessment, descriptive assessment, and functional analysis. Next, we examine antecedent and consequent interventions for active cooperation (i.e., following an instruction to complete a task), such as implementing the high-probability request sequence, reducing response effort, manipulating the delivery of instructions, and providing reinforcement. The third section focuses on interventions designed for passive cooperation (e.g., tolerating a medical device, remaining in the presence of a feared stimulus), which include exposure, noncontingent reinforcement, differential reinforcement of other behavior, and escape extinction. Overall, this chapter provides an overview of research and practices to support individuals who contend with noncompliance in children with autism

    The Arts as a Teaching Tool and the Power of Collaboration and Co-teaching

    Over the last seventeen years, an arts education initiative has transformed the dynamics of an isolated rural school into a model for rural arts access. Three teachers from Copper Basin High School began an avalanche of possibilities in 1997 when the Annenberg Rural Challenge Grant provided funding to begin a new era in a small rural school. Isolated by geographical boundaries and stifled by economical hardships since the closing of the copper mines in 1988, something had to be done. After a series of teacher in-services for visual strategies (using art as a teaching tool reflective of Gardner\u27s Multiple Intelligences), followed with collaborations between teachers and art consultants, students were led to a deeper understanding through problem solving, critical thinking, and creative explorations. After this experiment proved successful, in a grassroots self-supporting survival move, a non-profit organization was established and grants were obtained to continue and expand the work. In 2004, an unexpected corporate partnership with Glenn Springs Holdings, Inc. was established to provide funding and support to develop the Copper Basin Learning Center. This session examines the path that led to the Learning Center, challenges faced along the way, and what works in the program and why. There is a lot of talk on the educational forefront today concerning moving from STEM to STEAM, with the arts being a significant component. Discussion will include dispelling basic assumptions and developing a workable plan of action for incorporating the arts in the school curriculum

    Atomic spectrometry update : a review of advances in environmental analysis

    This is the 31st annual review of the application of atomic spectrometry to the chemical analysis of environmental samples. This update refers to papers published approximately between August 2014 and July 2015 and continues the series of Atomic Spectrometry Updates (ASUs) in Environmental Analysis that should be read in conjunction with other related ASUs in the series, namely: clinical and biological materials, foods and beverages; advances in atomic spectrometry and related techniques; elemental speciation; X-ray spectrometry; and metals, chemicals and functional materials. In the field of air analysis, highlights within this review period included: the development of a new laser fluorescence instrument for the ultratrace determination of mercury vapour; single particle ICP-MS studies and the coupling of elemental analysers to mass spectrometers for the improved characterisation of carbonaceous aerosols. In the arena of water analysis, methods continue to be developed: for the extraction and preconcentration of elements, As, Cr, Hg and Sb species and determination of elemental constituents in colloidal and NP fractions. Emerging elements of interest include Gd derived from MRI agents discharged at low level from medical facilities in water courses. Instrumental developments reported included the use of MC-ICP-MS for isotopic tracer studies and a review of TXRF techniques and associated preconcentration procedures for trace element analysis. In the period covered by this update several articles have explored the analysis of soil extracts for geochemical prospecting. There has been widening interest in the use of CS-AAS and in the application of techniques capable of direct sample analysis such as slurry sampling ETAAS and ETV-ICP-AES. Portable XRF instrumentation is now being used in many disciplines to quantify trace elements in soils – bringing a need for better transfer of analytical knowledge to non-specialist users – and the growing use of portable XRF in proximal sensing is also noteworthy. Recent research indicates that geological applications still drive many of the instrumental and methodological advances in LA-ICP-MS. Fundamental studies continued to shed light on the processes involved and hence ways of improving the analysis of laser-produced aerosols and to minimise matrix and fractionation effects. A new technique LA-DOF-MS (distance of flight) was described. The utility of LIBS and portable XRF for in situ survey work continues to show promise but issues such as appropriate calibration regimes and data processing protocols will still need to be addressed

    Guidance of sentinel lymph node biopsy decisions in patients with T1-T2 melanoma using gene expression profiling.

    AIM: Can gene expression profiling be used to identify patients with T1-T2 melanoma at low risk for sentinel lymph node (SLN) positivity? PATIENTS & METHODS: Bioinformatics modeling determined a population in which a 31-gene expression profile test predicted \u3c5% SLN positivity. Multicenter, prospectively-tested (n = 1421) and retrospective (n = 690) cohorts were used for validation and outcomes, respectively. RESULTS: Patients 55-64 years and ≥65 years with a class 1A (low-risk) profile had SLN positivity rates of 4.9% and 1.6%. Class 2B (high-risk) patients had SLN positivity rates of 30.8% and 11.9%. Melanoma-specific survival was 99.3% for patients ≥55 years with class 1A, T1-T2 tumors and 55.0% for class 2B, SLN-positive, T1-T2 tumors. CONCLUSION: The 31-gene expression profile test identifies patients who could potentially avoid SLN biopsy

    Myocardial ischemia in the absence of epicardial coronary artery disease in Friedreich's ataxia

    We present the first in vivo detection of microvascular abnormality in a patient with Friedreich's ataxia (FA) without epicardial coronary artery disease using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). The patient had exertional chest pain and dyspnea prompting referral for cardiac evaluation. These symptoms were reproduced during intravenous adenosine infusion, and simultaneous first-pass perfusion imaging showed a significant subendocardial defect; both symptoms and perfusion deficit were absent at rest. Epicardial coronaries were free of disease by invasive angiography; together, these findings support the notion of impaired myocardial perfusion reserve in FA

    First Results from the Mojave Volatiles Prospector (MVP) Field Campaign, a Lunar Polar Rover Mission Analog

    The Mojave Volatiles Prospector (MVP) project is a science-driven field program with the goal to produce critical knowledge for conducting robotic exploration of the Moon. MVP will feed science, payload, and operational lessons learned to the development of a real-time, short-duration lunar polar volatiles prospecting mission. MVP achieves these goals through a simulated lunar rover mission to investigate the composition and distribution of surface and subsurface volatiles in a natural and a priori unknown environment within the Mojave Desert, improving our understanding of how to find, characterize, and access volatiles on the Moon. The MVP field site is the Mojave Desert, selected for its low, naturally occurring water abundance. The Mojave typically has on the order of 2-6% water, making it a suitable lunar analog for this field test. MVP uses the Near Infrared and Visible Spectrometer Subsystem (NIRVSS), Neutron Spectrometer Subsystem (NSS), and a downward facing GroundCam camera on the KREX-2 rover to investigate the relationship between the distribution of volatiles and soil crust variation. Through this investigation, we mature robotic in situ instruments and concepts of instrument operations, improve ground software tools for real time science, and carry out publishable research on the water cycle and its connection to geomorphology and mineralogy in desert environments. A lunar polar rover mission is unlike prior space missions and requires a new concept of operations. The rover must navigate 3-5 km of terrain and examine multiple sites in in just ~6 days. Operational decisions must be made in real time, requiring constant situational awareness, data analysis and rapid turnaround decision support tools. This presentation will focus on the first science results and operational architecture findings from the MVP field deployment relevant to a lunar polar rover mission

    High-fat diets and seizure control in myoclonic-astatic epilepsy: A single center's experience

    AbstractPurposeTo determine the efficacy of the Modified Atkins Diet (MAD) and Ketogenic Diet (KD) in seizure control within a population of myoclonic-astatic epilepsy (MAE) patients.MethodsThis was a retrospective, single center study evaluating the seizure control by high fat diets. Seizure diaries kept by the parents performed seizure counts. All patients met the clinical criteria for MAE.ResultsNine patients met the clinical criteria. We found that both the MAD and KD were efficacious in complete seizure control and allowed other medications to be stopped in seven patients. Two patients had greater than 90% seizure control without medications, one on the KD and the other on the MAD. Seizure freedom has ranged from 13 to 36 months, and during this time four patients have been fully weaned off of diet management. One patient was found to have a mutation in SLC2A1.ConclusionOur results suggest that strictly defined MAE patients respond to the MAD with prolonged seizure control. Some patients may require the KD for seizure freedom, suggesting a common pathway of increased requirement for fats. Once controlled, those fully responsive to the Diet(s) could be weaned off traditional seizure medications and in many, subsequently off the MAD or KD
