The Legacy of Race Based Slavery in the United States

    Get PDF
Alexis de Tocqueville qualifies the race based slavery of the United States as the greatest evil in the history of man. Through the lens of Tocqueville, I will examine the origin, nature, and characteristics of the race based system of slavery that was born in colonial times up to the implementation of the Civil Rights movement of 1964. The focus of this presentation will be on the dramatic effect that climate and topography have on the development of regional character, and the accuracy of Tocqueville\u27s predictions concerning the future of race relations in the United States

University of Missouri-Columbia 2007.Dissertations, Academic -- University of Missouri--Columbia -- Geological sciences. The pegmatites of San Diego County, California, are part of the Mesozoic Peninsular Ranges Batholith of southwestern California and Baja California, Mexico. Three LCT- pegmatites were studied. The pegmatites have texturally, mineralogically, and chemically distinct footwalls, pegmatitic zones, and central pocket zones. Tourmaline shows enrichment in incompatible Li from the wall zones towards the pocket indicating that the dikes crystallized inward from the wall rock contact, with the line rock crystallizing until the melt reached fluid saturation, at which point, fluid and melt separated to form the pegmatite and the pockets, respectively. Li was strongly partitioned in favor of the fluid. The isotopic composition of tourmaline is reflective of the medium from which it crystallized and is controlled by the coordination of Li in that medium. ⁷Li prefers sites with smaller coordination numbers and stronger bonds while ⁶Li fractionates into weaker sites with higher coordination numbers. Tourmaline in the pegmatitic zone is isotopically heavier than that in the pocket zone, suggesting that ⁷Li was enriched in the melt and that the bonds of Li in the melt are stronger than the hydrated bonds of Li in the fluid. The [sigma] ⁷Li values in tourmaline crystallized in the pocket are similar to those in the line rock tourmaline, which is consistent with the accumulation of the bulk of the initial Li that was in the original melt in the pocket fluid, as this would result in little change in the isotopic composition of the Li

Normative Beliefs and Social Support in Weight Loss Communication

    Get PDF
As obesity rates have increased in the past decade, interpersonal communication about weight has taken on greater importance. In this study, we investigate normative beliefs about weight loss communication and the social support provided through such communication. A sample of N = 196 college students reported that they considered weight loss communication to be non-normative in the United States, but that they had positive attitudes toward such communication. In addition, they felt that they would be likely to engage in such conversations themselves. When given the opportunity to respond to a hypothetical weight loss communication scenario, 93% of participants provided a response. Their responses included both action-facilitating and nurturant support, and often blended the two forms of support together. In addition, participants’ responses emphasized health, rather than weight loss alone. Building on results from this study, future health communication campaigns regarding weight loss could aim to a) increase the perception of weight loss communication as normative, b) emphasize health rather than weight loss alone, and c) provide examples of how social support is communicated in this context

Cost Estimating and Forecasting for Highway Work in Kentucky [1997]

    Get PDF
There is a need for better cost estimating and forecasting for highway work in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. KRS45.245 grants the Interim Joint Committee on Transportation oversight of the biennial highway plan, including a review of all authorized highway project phases that exceed their estimates by 15%. Estimates developed using current methods are not sufficiently accurate to preclude cost overruns in excess of 15%. Estimates are prepared before design is begun so that a project may be included in the six year plan. The estimates are not revised after a more detailed scope of the project is developed during design and after design is completed. Consequently, there have been 455 overruns since 1992. All have been approved for the necessary additional funding. Causes of cost overruns for the 455 overruns during the past five years were studies. The development of a conceptual estimating model, KYEstimate, was continued and reported on. Recommendations and conclusions are presented

Association between temperament related traits and SNPs in the serotonin and oxytocin systems in Merino sheep

ABSTRACT Animal temperament is defined as the consistent behavioral and physiological differences that are seen between individuals in response to the same stressor. Neurotransmitter systems, like serotonin and oxytocin in the central nervous system, underlie variation in behavioral traits in humans and other animals. Variations like single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes for tryptophan 5-hydroxylase (TPH2), the serotonin transporter (SLC6A4), the serotonin receptor (HTR2A), and the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) are associated with behavioral phenotype in humans. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify SNPs in those genes and to test if those variations are associated with the temperament in Merino sheep. Using ewes from the University of Western Australia temperament flock, that has been selected on emotional reactivity for more than 20 generations, eight SNPs (rs107856757, rs107856818, rs107856856 and rs107857156 in TPH2, rs20917091 in SLC6A4, rs17196799 and rs17193181 in HTR2A, and rs17664565 in OXTR) were found to be distributed differently between calm and nervous sheep. These eight SNPs were then genotyped in 260 sheep from a flock that has never been selected on emotional reactivity, followed by the estimation of the behavioral traits of those 260 sheep using an arena test and an isolation box test. We found that several SNPs in TPH2 (rs107856757, rs107856818, rs107856856 and rs107857156) were in strong linkage disequilibrium, and all were associated with behavioral phenotype in the non-selected sheep. Similarly, rs17196799 in HTR2A was also associated with the behavioral phenotype

Retrospective Study of Healthcare Resources Developed for Patients by Interprofessional Teams

Wayne State University (WSU) emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary education by having students participate in an Interprofessional Team Visit (IPTV) program. A 60-minute virtual visit is conducted to assess adults aged over 50 years within the Detroit Metropolitan Area (Metro Detroit) community. This project was designed to prepare healthcare students in evaluating the mental, physical, and social health aspects of assigned patients based on specific disciplinary assessments. Upon completion of assessments, the interdisciplinary team provided the patient with resources based on the team and the patient\u27s agreed-upon area of concern. Twenty-eight IPTV teams, consisting of a medical and occupational therapy student and a healthcare professional student from another discipline studying at WSU, were randomly created. The IPTV resource guides created by each team were reviewed and sorted into two categories based on the health or social need of the individual patient. The data identified three main areas of interest, which included medication management, diet and exercise plans, and the use of technology to stay connected to medical professionals, friends, and family. The purpose of this report is to assess the IPTV program’s findings and analyze patients’ concerns based on health or social needs and the resources presented to them
