Alexis de Tocqueville qualifies the race based slavery of the United States as the greatest evil in the history of man. Through the lens of Tocqueville, I will examine the origin, nature, and characteristics of the race based system of slavery that was born in colonial times up to the implementation of the Civil Rights movement of 1964. The focus of this presentation will be on the dramatic effect that climate and topography have on the development of regional character, and the accuracy of Tocqueville\u27s predictions concerning the future of race relations in the United States
