    SIAC Filtering for Nonlinear Hyperbolic Equations

    We present the results of the symmetric and one-sided Smoothness-Increasing Accuracy-Conserving (SIAC) filter applied to a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) approximation for two examples of nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. The traditional symmetric SIAC filter relies on having a translation invariant mesh, periodic boundary conditions and linear equations. However, for practical applications that are modelled by nonlinear hyperbolic equations, this is not feasible. Instead we must concentrate on a filter that allows error reduction for nonuniform/unstructured meshes and non-periodic boundary conditions for nonlinear hyperbolic equations. This proceedings is an introductory exploration into the feasibility of these requirements for efficient filtering of nonlinear equations

    Topology Control in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks: Problems and Solutions

    Previous work on topology control usually assumes homogeneous wireless nodes with uniform transmission ranges. In this paper, we propose two localized topology control algorithms for heterogeneous wireless multi-hop networks with nonuniform transmission ranges: Directed Relative Neighborhood Graph (DRNG) and Directed Local Spanning Subgraph (DLSS). In both algorithms, each node selects a set of neighbors based on the locally collected information. We prove that (1) the topologies derived under DRNG and DLSS preserve the network connectivity; (2) the out degree of any node in the resulting topology by DLSS is bounded, while the out degree cannot be bounded in DRNG; and (3) the topologies generated by DRNG and DLSS preserve the network bi-directionality

    A 1998 Social Accounting Matrix for Thailand

    This paper documents the features of a 1998 social accounting matrix (SAM) for Thailand. It begins with a description of the overall economy both via a macro SAM and a national accounts balance sheet. The macro SAM was the result of aggregating a micro SAM; a mapping of the final micro SAM to the macro SAM is presented. The micro SAM was a modified version of a SAM obtained from the Thai Development Research Institute (TDRI). The paper describes the modification process in detail. The original dataset obtained from TDRI was a "balanced™ matrix." The converted SAM, after the modification, was still balanced. It was therefore unnecessary to apply any balancing procedure. The final 1998 micro SAM for Thailand has 61 sectors, 3 household types, and 3 factors (labor, agricultural capital, and non-agricultural capital). Particularly helpful for the intended analysis on energy and environmental policy is that it has 8 primary energy sectors, 5 transportation sectors, and a health and medical treatment commodity account.Social accounting Thailand. ,Economic surveys Thailand. ,Household surveys Thailand. ,TMD ,

    A Case Report of Case Report Pursuit by Medical Student

    Medical students often seek case reports as vehicles for academic writing opportunities, conference presentation avenues, and residency/fellowship application highlights. Here we review a case where, due to unfortunate circumstances, a student made a unique diagnosis central to proper patient clinical care, wished to write up the case subsequently, but was ultimately excluded from the final work stemming from the patient case. We review the pitfalls that occurred in the process of pursuing publication of an interesting case, the educational value of pursuing case reports for students, the necessity for strong mentorship in this process, and general principles that medical students can follow regarding case report creation to avoid being burned

    Deformation-Driven Diffusion and Plastic Flow in Two-Dimensional Amorphous Granular Pillars

    We report a combined experimental and simulation study of deformation-induced diffusion in compacted two-dimensional amorphous granular pillars, in which thermal fluctuations play negligible role. The pillars, consisting of bidisperse cylindrical acetal plastic particles standing upright on a substrate, are deformed uniaxially and quasistatically by a rigid bar moving at a constant speed. The plastic flow and particle rearrangements in the pillars are characterized by computing the best-fit affine transformation strain and non-affine displacement associated with each particle between two stages of deformation. The non-affine displacement exhibits exponential crossover from ballistic to diffusive behavior with respect to the cumulative deviatoric strain, indicating that in athermal granular packings, the cumulative deviatoric strain plays the role of time in thermal systems and drives effective particle diffusion. We further study the size-dependent deformation of the granular pillars by simulation, and find that different-sized pillars follow self-similar shape evolution during deformation. In addition, the yield stress of the pillars increases linearly with pillar size. Formation of transient shear lines in the pillars during deformation becomes more evident as pillar size increases. The width of these elementary shear bands is about twice the diameter of a particle, and does not vary with pillar size.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure
