Part 1 of the catalog presents an astronomical overview of the Guide Star Catalog, together with its history, the properties of its current implementation, and the prospects for enhancement. Part 2 presents the algorithms used in photometric and astrometric calibration of the catalog, as well as the analyses of the related errors. Part 3 presents the current structure and content, as well as future enhancements in this area. An overview of the forthcoming publications is given, both with regard to scientific papers and electronic media

Catalog Matching with Astrometric Correction and its Application to the Hubble Legacy Archive

Object cross-identification in multiple observations is often complicated by the uncertainties in their astrometric calibration. Due to the lack of standard reference objects, an image with a small field of view can have significantly larger errors in its absolute positioning than the relative precision of the detected sources within. We present a new general solution for the relative astrometry that quickly refines the World Coordinate System of overlapping fields. The efficiency is obtained through the use of infinitesimal 3-D rotations on the celestial sphere, which do not involve trigonometric functions. They also enable an analytic solution to an important step in making the astrometric corrections. In cases with many overlapping images, the correct identification of detections that match together across different images is difficult to determine. We describe a new greedy Bayesian approach for selecting the best object matches across a large number of overlapping images. The methods are developed and demonstrated on the Hubble Legacy Archive, one of the most challenging data sets today. We describe a novel catalog compiled from many Hubble Space Telescope observations, where the detections are combined into a searchable collection of matches that link the individual detections. The matches provide descriptions of astronomical objects involving multiple wavelengths and epochs. High relative positional accuracy of objects is achieved across the Hubble images, often sub-pixel precision in the order of just a few milli-arcseconds. Branco no Brasil: identidade brasileira, mestiçagem e branquitude na mídia

Análise sobre as formas mais tradicionais de se representar as relações raciais no Brasil, baseadas na narrativa da mestiçagem como o traço definidor da identidade nacional do brasileiro. Para isso, utiliza-se o conceito de branquitude como paradigma crítico de leitura desses discursos, de forma a explicitar como indivíduos brancos continuam ocupando posições de privilégio numa sociedade profundamente desigual e hierarquizada racialmente. Dessa forma, fazemos em primeiro lugar uma sucinta revisão bibliográfica acerca das representações do racismo no Brasil e sobre como certas leituras em torno do histórico de miscigenação do país podem muitas vezes ocultar mecanismos que mantém uma série de proteções e vantagens para indivíduos brancos em detrimento dos negros. Depois, a pesquisa analisa alguns artigos jornalísticos e produtos audiovisuais que servem de pistas sobre o atual debate em torno das relações raciais nos meios de comunicação de massa, e de como este ainda engatinha em relação a busca de novos entendimentos que não o do velho mito da mestiçagem que simboliza um país supostamente livre da doença social do racismo

Zeeman observations of W Sgr

A new precise method for measuring magnetic fields on Zeeman plates of the southern Cepheid 'W Sgr' is reviewed. Ten plates over the 7.6(d) period of pulsation show two extrema in the measured values of the effective magnetic field. The method has a precision of + or - 0.4 microns in the Zeeman shift corresponding to + or - 50 Gauss (g). A negative spike of -220 g occurred at the time of arrival of the compressional wave of pulsation at the stellar surface. A positive field of +270 g occurred at the phase of most rapid contraction near the temperature minimum of the pulsation cycle
