Sport after total hip arthroplasty: undoubted progress but still some unknowns

    Get PDF
In this review, we discuss the evidence for patients returning to sport after hip arthroplasty. This includes the choices regarding level of sporting activity and revision or complications, the type of implant, fixation and techniques of implantation, and how these choices relate to health economics. It is apparent that despite its success over six decades, hip arthroplasty has now evolved to accommodate and support ever-increasing patient demands and may therefore face new challenges. This article is freely available via Open Access. Get PDF
The effects of Sr substitution on the electrical, magnetoresistance and magnetotransport properties of Nd1−xSrxMnO3 were studied. Nd1−xSrxMnO3 samples were prepared using the solid-state reaction method with x=0.12, 0.152, 0.22, 0.252 and 0.32. All samples showed an orthorhombic structure, and no impurities were detected when the samples were examined using the X-ray diffraction method. The grain size was between 10 μm and 16 μm for all samples. The sample with x=0.32 showed the smallest grain size and the lowest To value, where To reflects the MnOMn bond angle. As the Sr concentration increased, the grains grew into more pentagonal and hexagonal shapes, and the insulator–metal transition temperature, Tim, also increased from 131 K to 180 K. The exceptions were the samples with x=0.152 and 0.252, where charge ordering was found at 120 K. The samples with the most pentagonal and hexagonal shaped grains (x=0.32) had the highest Tim. The magnetoresistance (MR) values were found to increase with increasing magnetic field. The sample with x=0.32 showed the highest MR value (31.5%), the highest Tim, the smallest grain size (∼10 μm) and the least bending of the MnOMn bonding angle

This study briefly discussed about the problem and challenges faced by Sarawak handicraft entrepreneurs such as forest-based products, textile products, metal-based products, ceramic products and assorted crafts in the state. It is based on my research carried out in the year 2011 till 2012.Most entrepreneurs that are involved in this research were registered under Perbadanan Kemajuan Kraftangan Sarawak and Sarawak Craft Council by making handicrafts-as full-time or part-time jobs. Some of them have been identified actively producing handicrafts in a big and small scale.Nevertheless, to develop and expand their products in the market, they encounter several problems and challenges, relatively to the lack of raw materials. This has been a very common issue highlighted by the entrepreneurs during this research is conducted since 2011. Besides that, few of the handicraft entrepreneurs in Sarawak have been identified to face with the lack of capital, long time of product completion, inadequate of technological equipment, market and customer demand, and so forth

Recently, changes in dietary trends and modern lifestyles have led to many lifestyles related diseases. Physical activity is the best preventive measure against these diseases. Physical education (PE) has the proven potential to promote participation in physical activity. Therefore it is important to study PE enjoyment in relation to the effectiveness of PE in secondary schools in promoting active lifestyles. The objectives is to provide the enjoyment profile among selected secondary school around Kuching Sarawak and to study relationship between enjoyment and participation in physical activity among secondary schools students in Kuching, Sarawak. A total of 370 students aged between 13-16 years were selected among the six secondary schools in the vicinity of Kuching, Sarawak. From the 273 students involved 141 male and 132 of them are female. The research involved two daily schools, two elite schools and two missionary schools. Measurements were carried out by administrating two sets of questionnaire which are shorter versions of the international questionnaire for physical activity (IPAQ) and the physical education enjoyment questionnaire (PEEPQ). For analytical purposes, descriptive statistics were used for primary measures, and the Pearson correlation coefficient analysis was performed to examine the relationship between PE enjoyments and total physical activity scores. Activity Generated Excitement (AGE) revealed the strongest processes of enjoyment in this study. However, there was no significant relationship between PE enjoyment and participation in physical activity (p>0.05) among the selected secondary schools student around Kuching, Sarawak. This research finding support that the Activity Generated Excitement process is the most important factor influencing enjoyment in PE experience. Therefore, the PE class should consider this process in order to promote enjoyment among adolescents

Assessment of floristic composition in a rehabilitated forest, Sarawak, Malaysia

    Get PDF
Assessment of the floristic composition provides information on forest succession stage which is important but only relatively few information are available on the rehabilitated tropical forest. The information can provide an indication of the recovery status of the forest. The objective of this study was to assess the floristic composition of selected age stands at a rehabilitated forest situated in Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus, Sarawak, Malaysia. A 20 x 20 m plot (0.04 ha) was established each in stands planted in 1991, 1999, 2008 and an adjacent natural regenerating secondary forest (± 23-year-old). All stands were tagged, identified and analyzed for species composition, Importance Value (IV), species diversity and similarity. Floristic analysis showed that in the rehabilitated forest, over 50% of the total family was dominated by the Dipterocarpaceae family but only 14% in natural regenerating secondary forest. Based on the IV Index, stand year 1991 was dominated by Shorea dasyphylla (IV=155.8) while stand year 1999, 2008 and natural regenerating secondary forest were Dryobalanops beccarii (IV=156.2), Sandoricum borneense (IV=144.4) Teijsmanniodendron holophyllum (IV=115.3), respectively. The Simpson’s diversity index at the rehabilitated forest ranged from 0.82 to 0.87 compared to 0.98 at the natural regenerating secondary forest whereas the Shannon-Wiener diversity index ranged from 2.04 to 2.29 compared to 4.23, respectively. Jaccard’s Coefficient of Similarity (Cj) between all combinations of the study plots was generally low (2.2-19.4%). Rehabilitated forest exhibited climax species community despite having lower species diversity. This can promote the conservation of these climax species

A laundry service is a company which does laundry for its clients. There are a number of different styles of laundry service, with varying rates. Laundry services are especially popular with people who are very busy, and with people and organizations which have high volumes of laundry, along with people who simply dislike doing laundry. Many communities have laundry services, which may be listed in the phone book or available through laundromats. In a classic laundry service, laundry is picked up from residences and businesses on a regular schedule. People usually pay by weight for their laundry, with the service washing, drying, and folding the laundry. Additional services like stain treatment. dry cleaning, and ironing may also be offered at some laundry services. It is also possible to drop laundry off with a laundry service. Many laundromats allow customers to drop laundry off for cleaning, also charging by weight. Customers may be able to pick from an a la carte menu which includes folding, ironing, and mending services. These services often offer quick turnaround for customers in a hurry. Some laundry services cater to specific types of customers. Diaper services, for example, just handle cloth diapers for their customers, dropping off a load of freshly laundered diapers every time they pick up a dirty load. College laundry services handle dormitory laundry for college students, which may be limited to sheets and towels owned by the service, or extended to all student laundry. Other laundry services prefer to work with industrial customers like restaurants, inns, hospitals, and animal shelters. Some are specifically certified to handle biohazardous laundry, often charging an extra fee for hazardous substances

Most tropical rainforest tree species depends on forest gaps for their successful regeneration. Evaluation on the gap or canopy openness provides an indicator on the forest development stages. This paper reported on the canopy openness (CO) of three study plots at (1-, 9-, 18-year old) rehabilitated forest sites and one study plot at natural regenerating secondary forest (± 22-year old) in UPM-Mitsubishi Corporation Forest Rehabilitation Project, Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMKB). Plot of 20 x 20 m was established where dendrometric parameters were collected while Delta-T Device HemiView system was used to take the hemispherical photograph and field observation information were used to assess the CO. Qualitative analysis of the photographs suggested there were three stages of forest growth namely gap, building and mature stand development phases. These also helped the interpretation of the quantitative analysis in relation to forest dynamics. Hemispherical photographs were used for quantitative analysis of the CO. CO showed statistical significant differences among study plots which recorded a range of 3-78%. Rapid analysis of CO on the hemispherical photographs with information from the dendrometric measurement had assisted in assessing the forest stand development. The canopy openness was dependent on the age of the rehabilitated forest. Overall, the study plots were in the different stages of stand development
