Structural, elastic and thermal properties of cementite (FeC) calculated using Modified Embedded Atom Method
Structural, elastic and thermal properties of cementite (FeC) were
studied using a Modified Embedded Atom Method (MEAM) potential for iron-carbon
(Fe-C) alloys. Previously developed Fe and C single element potentials were
used to develop an Fe-C alloy MEAM potential, using a statistically-based
optimization scheme to reproduce structural and elastic properties of
cementite, the interstitial energies of C in bcc Fe as well as heat of
formation of Fe-C alloys in L and B structures. The stability of
cementite was investigated by molecular dynamics simulations at high
temperatures. The nine single crystal elastic constants for cementite were
obtained by computing total energies for strained cells. Polycrystalline
elastic moduli for cementite were calculated from the single crystal elastic
constants of cementite. The formation energies of (001), (010), and (100)
surfaces of cementite were also calculated. The melting temperature and the
variation of specific heat and volume with respect to temperature were
investigated by performing a two-phase (solid/liquid) molecular dynamics
simulation of cementite. The predictions of the potential are in good agreement

Translating Building Information Modeling to Building Energy Modeling Using Model View Definition
This paper presents a new approach to translate between Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Building Energy Modeling (BEM) that uses Modelica, an object-oriented declarative, equation-based simulation environment. The approach (BIM2BEM) has been developed using a data modeling method to enable seamless model translations of building geometry, materials, and topology. Using data modeling, we created a Model View Definition (MVD) consisting of a process model and a class diagram. The process model demonstrates object-mapping between BIM and Modelica-based BEM (ModelicaBEM) and facilitates the definition of required information during model translations. The class diagram represents the information and object relationships to produce a class package intermediate between the BIM and BEM. The implementation of the intermediate class package enables system interface (Revit2Modelica) development for automatic BIM data translation into ModelicaBEM. In order to demonstrate and validate our approach, simulation result comparisons have been conducted via three test cases using (1) the BIM-based Modelica models generated from Revit2Modelica and (2) BEM models manually created using LBNL Modelica Buildings library. Our implementation shows that BIM2BEM (1) enables BIM models to be translated into ModelicaBEM models, (2) enables system interface development based on the MVD for thermal simulation, and (3) facilitates the reuse of original BIM data into building energy simulation without an import/export process
Kelvin Probe Studies of Cesium Telluride Photocathode for AWA Photoinjector
Cesium telluride is an important photocathode as an electron source for
particle accelerators. It has a relatively high quantum efficiency (>1%), is
sufficiently robust in a photoinjector, and has a long lifetime. This
photocathode is grown in-house for a new Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA)
beamline to produce high charge per bunch (~50 nC) in a long bunch train. Here,
we present a study of the work function of cesium telluride photocathode using
the Kelvin Probe technique. The study includes an investigation of the
correlation between the quantum efficiency and the work function, the effect of
photocathode aging, the effect of UV exposure on the work function, and the
evolution of the work function during and after photocathode rejuvenation via

Visualization of human retinal micro-capillaries with phase contrast high-speed optical coherence tomography
We present high-speed Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (Fd-OCT) with the phase variance based motion contrast method for visualizing retinal micro-circulation in vivo. This technique allows non-invasive visualization of a two-dimensional retinal perfusion map and concurrent volumetric morphology of retinal microvasculature with high sensitivity. The high-speed acquisition rate at 125kHz A-scans enables reduction of motion artifacts with increased scanning area if compared to previously reported results. Several scanning schemes with different sampling densities and scanning areas are evaluated to find optimal parameters for in vivo imaging. In order to evaluate this technique, we compare OCT micro-capillary imaging using the phase variance technique with fundus fluorescein angiography (FA). Propionibacterium acnes bacteriophages display limited genetic diversity and broad killing activity against bacterial skin isolates.
UnlabelledInvestigation of the human microbiome has revealed diverse and complex microbial communities at distinct anatomic sites. The microbiome of the human sebaceous follicle provides a tractable model in which to study its dominant bacterial inhabitant, Propionibacterium acnes, which is thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of the human disease acne. To explore the diversity of the bacteriophages that infect P. acnes, 11 P. acnes phages were isolated from the sebaceous follicles of donors with healthy skin or acne and their genomes were sequenced. Comparative genomic analysis of the P. acnes phage population, which spans a 30-year temporal period and a broad geographic range, reveals striking similarity in terms of genome length, percent GC content, nucleotide identity (>85%), and gene content. This was unexpected, given the far-ranging diversity observed in virtually all other phage populations. Although the P. acnes phages display a broad host range against clinical isolates of P. acnes, two bacterial isolates were resistant to many of these phages. Moreover, the patterns of phage resistance correlate closely with the presence of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat elements in the bacteria that target a specific subset of phages, conferring a system of prokaryotic innate immunity. The limited diversity of the P. acnes bacteriophages, which may relate to the unique evolutionary constraints imposed by the lipid-rich anaerobic environment in which their bacterial hosts reside, points to the potential utility of phage-based antimicrobial therapy for acne.ImportancePropionibacterium acnes is a dominant member of the skin microflora and has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of acne; however, little is known about the bacteriophages that coexist with and infect this bacterium. Here we present the novel genome sequences of 11 P. acnes phages, thereby substantially increasing the amount of available genomic information about this phage population. Surprisingly, we find that, unlike other well-studied bacteriophages, P. acnes phages are highly homogeneous and show a striking lack of genetic diversity, which is perhaps related to their unique and restricted habitat. They also share a broad ability to kill clinical isolates of P. acnes; phage resistance is not prevalent, but when detected, it appears to be conferred by chromosomally encoded immunity elements within the host genome. We believe that these phages display numerous features that would make them ideal candidates for the development of a phage-based therapy for acne
Rapid Oscillations in Cataclysmic Variables. XVI. DW Cancri
We report photometry and spectroscopy of the novalike variable DW Cancri. The
spectra show the usual broad H and He emission lines, with an excitation and
continuum slope characteristic of a moderately high accretion rate. A
radial-velocity search yields strong detections at two periods, 86.1015(3) min
and 38.58377(6) min. We interpret these as respectively the orbital period
P_orb of the binary, and the spin period P_spin of a magnetic white dwarf. The
light curve also shows the spin period, plus an additional strong signal at
69.9133(10) min, which coincides with the difference frequency
1/P_spin-1/P_orb. These periods are stable over the 1 year baseline of
measurement.
This triply-periodic structure mimics the behavior of several
well-credentialed members of the "DQ Herculis" (intermediate polar) class of
cataclysmic variables. DQ Her membership is also suggested by the mysteriously
strong sideband signal (at nu_spin-nu_orb), attesting to a strong pulsed flux
at X-ray/EUV/UV wavelengths. DW Cnc is a new member of this class, and would be

Mid-Infrared Properties of Luminous Infrared Galaxies II: Probing the Dust and Gas Physics of the GOALS Sample
The Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) is a comprehensive,
multiwavelength study of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) in the local
universe. Here we present the results of a multi-component, spectral
decomposition analysis of the low resolution mid-IR Spitzer IRS spectra from
5-38um of 244 LIRG nuclei. The detailed fits and high quality spectra allow for
characterization of the individual PAH features, warm molecular hydrogen
emission, and optical depths for silicate dust grains and water ices. We find
that starbursting LIRGs, which make up the majority of GOALS, are very
consistent in their MIR properties (i.e. tau_9.7um, tau_ice, neon line and PAH
feature ratios). However, as their PAH EQW decreases, usually an indicator of
an increasingly dominant AGN, LIRGs cover a larger spread in these MIR
parameters. The contribution from PAHs to the total L(IR) in LIRGs varies from
2-29% and LIRGs prior to their first encounter show higher L(PAH)/L(IR) ratios
on average. We observe a correlation between the strength of the starburst
(IR8) and the PAH fraction at 8um but not with the 7.7 to 11.3 PAH ratio,
suggesting the fractional PDR emission, and not the overall grain properties,
is associated with the rise in IR8 for galaxies off the starburst main
sequence. We detect crystalline silicate features in 6% of the sample but only
in the most obscured sources (s_9.7um < -1.24). Ice absorption features are
observed in 11% (56%) of GOALS LIRGs (ULIRGs). Most GOALS LIRGs have
L(H2)/L(PAH) ratios elevated above those observed for normal star-forming
galaxies and exhibit a trend for increasing L(H2)/L(PAH) ratio with increasing
L(H2). While star formation appears to be the dominant process responsible for
exciting the H2 in most of the GOALS galaxies, a subset of LIRGs (10%) show
excess H2 emission that is inconsistent with PDR models and may be excited by
shocks or AGN-induced outflows.Comment: 21 pages with 20 figures plus 2 table
Quantum interference experiments, modular variables and weak measurements
We address the problem of interference using the Heisenberg picture and
highlight some new aspects through the use of pre-selection, post-selection,
weak measurements, and modular variables, We present a physical explanation for
the different behaviors of a single particle when the distant slit is open or
closed: instead of having a quantum wave that passes through all slits, we have
a localized particle with non-local interactions with the other slit(s). We
introduce a Gedankenexperiment to measure this non-local exchange. While the
Heisenberg picture and the Schrodinger pictures are equivalent formulations of
quantum mechanics, nevertheless, the results discussed here support a new
approach which has led to new insights, new intuitions, new experiments, and
even the possibility of new devices that were missed from the old perspective
Signal averaging x‐ray streak camera with picosecond jitter
We have developed an averaging picosecond x‐ray streak camera using a dc‐biased photoconductive switch as a generator of a high‐voltage ramp. The streak camera is operated at a sweep speed of up to 8 ps/mm, shot‐to‐shot jitter is less than ±1 ps. The streak camera has been used to measure the time history of broadband x‐ray emission from an ultrashort pulse laser‐produced plasma. Effectiveness of postoperative radiotherapy after radical cystectomy for locally advanced bladder cancer
BACKGROUND: Local-regional failure (LF) for locally advanced bladder cancer (LABC) after radical cystectomy (RC) is common even with chemotherapy and is associated with high morbidity/mortality. Postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) can reduce LF and may enhance overall survival (OS) but has no defined role. We hypothesized that the addition of PORT would improve OS in LABC in a large nationwide oncology database.
METHODS: We identified ≥ pT3pN0-3M0 LABC patients in the National Cancer Database diagnosed 2004-2014 who underwent RC ± PORT. OS was calculated using Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards regression modeling was used to identify predictors of OS. Propensity matching was performed to match RC patients who received PORT vs those who did not.
RESULTS: 15,124 RC patients were identified with 512 (3.3%) receiving PORT. Median OS was 20.0 months (95% CI, 18.2-21.8) for PORT vs 20.8 months (95% CI, 20.3-21.3) for no PORT (P = 0.178). In multivariable analysis, PORT was independently associated with improved OS: hazard ratio 0.87 (95% CI, 0.78-0.97); P = 0.008. A one-to-three propensity match yielded 1,858 patients (24.9% receiving PORT and 75.1% without). In the propensity-matched cohort, median OS was 19.8 months (95% CI, 18.0-21.6) for PORT vs 16.9 months (95% CI, 15.6-18.1) for no PORT (P = 0.030). In the propensity-matched cohort of urothelial carcinoma patients (N = 1,460), PORT was associated with improved OS for pT4, pN+, and positive margins (P \u3c 0.01 all).
CONCLUSION: In this observational cohort, PORT was associated with improved OS in LABC. While the data should be interpreted cautiously, these results lend support to the use of PORT in selected patients with LABC, regardless of histology. Prospective trials of PORT are warranted
