An extrasolar planetary system with three Neptune-mass planets

Over the past two years, the search for low-mass extrasolar planets has led to the detection of seven so-called 'hot Neptunes' or 'super-Earths' around Sun-like stars. These planets have masses 5-20 times larger than the Earth and are mainly found on close-in orbits with periods of 2-15 days. Here we report a system of three Neptune-mass planets with periods of 8.67, 31.6 and 197 days, orbiting the nearby star HD 69830. This star was already known to show an infrared excess possibly caused by an asteroid belt within 1 AU (the Sun-Earth distance). Simulations show that the system is in a dynamically stable configuration. Theoretical calculations favour a mainly rocky composition for both inner planets, while the outer planet probably has a significant gaseous envelope surrounding its rocky/icy core; the outer planet orbits within the habitable zone of this star.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, preprint of the paper published in Nature on May 18, 200

High precision astrometry mission for the detection and characterization of nearby habitable planetary systems with the Nearby Earth Astrometric Telescope (NEAT)

(abridged) A complete census of planetary systems around a volume-limited sample of solar-type stars (FGK dwarfs) in the Solar neighborhood with uniform sensitivity down to Earth-mass planets within their Habitable Zones out to several AUs would be a major milestone in extrasolar planets astrophysics. This fundamental goal can be achieved with a mission concept such as NEAT - the Nearby Earth Astrometric Telescope. NEAT is designed to carry out space-borne extremely-high-precision astrometric measurements sufficient to detect dynamical effects due to orbiting planets of mass even lower than Earth's around the nearest stars. Such a survey mission would provide the actual planetary masses and the full orbital geometry for all the components of the detected planetary systems down to the Earth-mass limit. The NEAT performance limits can be achieved by carrying out differential astrometry between the targets and a set of suitable reference stars in the field. The NEAT instrument design consists of an off-axis parabola single-mirror telescope, a detector with a large field of view made of small movable CCDs located around a fixed central CCD, and an interferometric calibration system originating from metrology fibers located at the primary mirror. The proposed mission architecture relies on the use of two satellites operating at L2 for 5 years, flying in formation and offering a capability of more than 20,000 reconfigurations (alternative option uses deployable boom). The NEAT primary science program will encompass an astrometric survey of our 200 closest F-, G- and K-type stellar neighbors, with an average of 50 visits. The remaining time might be allocated to improve the characterization of the architecture of selected planetary systems around nearby targets of specific interest (low-mass stars, young stars, etc.) discovered by Gaia, ground-based high-precision radial-velocity surveys.Comment: Accepted for publication in Experimental Astronomy. Boundary control of semilinear elliptic equations with discontinuous leading coefficients and unbounded controls

    No full text
International audienceWe consider optimal control problems governed by semilinear elliptic equations with pointwise constraints on the state variable. The main difference with previous papers is that we consider nonlinear boundary conditions, elliptic operators with discontinuous leading coefficients and unbounded controls. We can deal with problems with integral control constraints and the control may be a coefficient of order zero in the equation. We derive optimality conditions by means of a new Lagrange multiplier theorem in Banach spaces

A lagrange multiplier theorem for control problems with state constraints

International audienceWe prove an existence theorem of Lagrange multipliers for an abstract control problem in Banach spaces. This theorem may be applied to obtain optimality conditions for control problems governed by partial differential equations in the presence of pointwise state constraints

Genericity in deterministic and stochastic differential equations

International audienceWe prove that the convergence of the approximation with time delay, as well as pathwise uniqueness, are generic properties in ordinary differential equations as well as in stochastic differential equations. This is done in the case where the coefficients are neither bounded nor time continuous. The approximation with time delay is used to obtain existence of weak solutions for SDE. We also prove L^2-convergence of this approximation when only pathwise uniqueness is assumed

Second-gradient continua as homogenized limit of pantographic microstructured plates: a rigorous proof

    No full text
International audienceSince the works by Gabrio Piola, it has been debated the relevance of higher-gradient continuum models in mechanics. Some authors even questioned the logical consistency of higher-gradient theories, and the applicability of generalized continuum theories seems still open. The present paper considers a pantographic plate constituted by Euler beams suitably interconnected and proves that Piola’s heuristic homogenization method does produce an approximating continuum in which deformation energy depends only on second gradients of displacements. The Gamma-convergence argument presented herein shows indeed that Piola’s conjecture can be rigorously proven in a Banach space whose norm is physically dictated by energetic considerations
