Constant temperature description of the nuclear level densities
The spin and parity dependent nuclear level densities (NLD) are calculated
for medium-heavy nuclei using shell model techniques. The NLD are used to
calculate cross sections and reaction rates of interest for nuclear
astrophysics and nuclear energy applications. We investigate a new approach of
describing the shell model NLD via a constant temperature parametrization. This
approach provides new information about the effects of symmetries on the
temperature of the low-lying nuclear states, and it is shown to be more
versatile for applications

Chinaâs soft power and its cultural implication for Sri Lanka: Exploring Studentsâ perspectives
As China is now influential in most aspects of international politics, it has found a means to enhance and strengthen its influence peacefully. Chinaâs relations can be seen in almost every region in the world, particularly in Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Central Asia to enhance its influence in these regions and to project itself as a benign nation. Last decade it has rapidly expanded into the South Asian countries following an integrated strategy of economic engagement, development assistance, and cultural exchanges. Chinese initiatives in all these respects in the region have expanded through the concept of soft power. The Soft power initiative now became an increasingly important role in Chinese foreign policy strategies.
Chinaâs growing presence in Sri Lanka as a south Asian country can be seen notably through the soft power initiative. This study examines the Chinaâs growing presence in Sri Lanka in Cultural, Economic and Public diplomacy. The main focus of this study is to identify the implications of cultural diplomacy as a soft power tool. Therefore, as the study population, the present study has selected the University students of Sri Lanka. A judgmental sampling had been performed to collect the data with a structured questionnaire. The method employed for the data collection was quantitative and a correlational exploratory research design. The study reveals, there is a strong relationship between the influencing factors and the Chinaâs soft power. All three sub-dimensions, Cultural diplomacy, Economic diplomacy and Public diplomacy were jointly and individually influencing Sri Lanka as the Soft power tools. Necessary recommendations were identified to increase the level of diplomatic relations between the two countries

THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION AND THE PROPOSED REGULATION OF CIGARETTES
Since the 1930s the Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") has taken broad Jurisdiction over eveiyday products in an attempt to ensure public health. Despite that mission, the FDA In particular and the Federal government In general has done little to regulate the tobacco Industry. Recently, however, the Commissioner of the FDA, Dr. David A. Kessler. raised the possibility of regulating the cigarette industry. But is the simple regulation of cigarettes permitted by the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938, which grants the FDA jurisdiction over products? Given the unanimity of opinion on the hazards of cigarette smoking, the answer to this question is no, and yet the conclusion that cigarettes must be banned seems too radical to seriously imagine. As a result, the context in which the FDA has approached cigarette smoking should be analyzed
Associative Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria and their Potential to Support the Growth of Bioenergy Grasses on Marginal Lands
Rising demands for both food and energy have lifted up the idea of producing renewable biofuels from bioenergy grasses that can companion with associative N2ixing bacteria. Associative N2ixing bacteria can partially fulfill the N requirements of bioenergy grasses enabling successful application for marginal lands. The overall objective of this study was to measure the potential N2ixation of bacteria associated with three bioenergy grasses, giant miscanthus (Miscanthus x giganteus), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum; âAlamoâ) and energycane (hybrid of Saccharum spontaneum and S. officinarum; HO 02-147) as well as identifying N2ixing bacteria associated with these energy grasses and applying these isolates to grasses to increase biomass yield. It was hypothesized that three different energy grasses, giant miscanthus, switchgrass, and energycane have different capabilities to support the growth of associative N2ixing bacteria, and thus exhibit different rate and quantities of N2ixation. The dynamics of delta15Nair in the root-zones of three perennial bioenergy grasses, biomass yield and nitrogen derived from (%Ndfa) were obtained. Greater potential for N2ixation was identified in energycane associated plant system compared to switchgrass and giant miscanthus. Sorghum bicolor (M81-E) was used to calculate the %Ndfa. Moreover, a 15N2 enriched greenhouse study was carried out to estimate and compare the contribution of ANF to support field data. Greenhouse data further confirmed that energycane associated bacteria has greater potential N2ixation compared to giant miscanthus and switchgrass. Composition and diversity of N2ixing bacteria associated as endophytes and in the rhizosphere community of these three energy grasses were identified in marginal lands. Diverse N2ixing bacteria were observed to be associated with different grasses and Azospirillum sp. was identified in energycane. The effect of N2ixing bacteria on biomass was studied by inoculating three energy grasses with the bacteria isolated from energycane. Increased root lengths of giant miscanthus were observed upon inoculation. However, no other changes in biomass yield or shoot lengths were observed in three bioenergy grasses. Further research is needed to quantify endophytic and rhizosphere N2ixing bacteria and to determine their role in association in an effort to increase the biomass yield of other grasses and reduce N fertilizer inputs
Transcriptional Repressor Protein based Macrolide Biosensor Development with Improved Sensitivity
Macrolide antibiotics are in high demand for clinical applications. Macrolides are biosynthesized via giant assembly line polyketide synthases (PKS) which are arranged in a modular fashion. Combinatorial biosynthetic methods have been used to produce diversified macrolides by reprograming these modules and modifying tailoring enzymes required for post synthetic modifications. However it is challenging due to the size and complexity of PKSs. To overcome this challenge, new enzymes for macrolide diversification could be obtained by directed evolution where a large number of enzyme variants need to be screened. Therefore it is important to develop high throughput screening methods to identify the enzyme variants. MphR is a promiscuous macrolide sensing transcriptional repressor protein which regulates a gene cassette where Green Fluorescence Protein (GFP) is expressed upon binding of the macrolide antibiotic ligand to MphR. A system of two plasmids contains the genes required for the sensing process. This research is basically an insight of improving the sensitivity of MphR biosensor using a gene knockout approach where a gene expressing a protein related to antibiotic resistance is knocked out from the E.coli chromosome to obtain higher sensitivity of the biosensor.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1127/thumbnail.jp
Neighbourhood, city, diaspora: identity and belonging for Calcuttaâs Anglo-Indian and Chinese communities
PhDThis thesis is located in the wider debates in postcolonial cultural geography on the
city and diaspora. It engages with everyday lived spaces of Calcuttaâs Anglo-Indian
and Chinese communities through a focus on ideas of home, identity, belonging,
cosmopolitanism and nostalgia. Drawing on overlapping narratives of these two
communities in the city and in diaspora in London and Toronto, the thesis explores
the idea of Calcutta as a âdiaspora cityâ and also the notion of a âCalcutta diasporaâ. It
explores the material and imaginative entanglements of migration and places
narratives of identity and belonging for its Anglo-Indian and Chinese communities in
the context of the city. Both Anglo-Indian and Chinese communities have been an
integral part of Calcuttaâs colonial and postcolonial histories, and although many
members of both communities have migrated elsewhere in recent times, the city
remains an important locus of emotional register.
It is in this context that the thesis studies everyday lived spaces at different scales: in
the neighbourhood, in the city and in diaspora. While the actual spaces are located/
rooted in real neighbourhoods and cities inhabited by the communities, the
imagination of these spaces both in the city and in diaspora also intersect to create a
more complex relationship between minority communities and cities.
Methodologically, the thesis has adopted a multi-sited, qualitative approach to follow
the lives of the communities across cities. Whilst a large part of the material has been
drawn from in-depth interviews, the thesis also uses material drawn through
ethnographic research and participant observation at community events, maps of the
neighbourhood and city drawn by interviewees and secondary material such as
community publications and websites, films, pamphlets and newspaper reports
