Effect of the adsorbate stiffness on the resonance response of microcantilever sensors

The authors present a theoretical model to predict the resonance frequency shift due to molecule adsorption on micro- and nanocantilevers. They calculate the frequency shift experienced by cantilevers made of either silicon or the polymer SU-8, when two adsorbates, myosin protein and an alkanethiol, are attached to the cantilever surface. They demonstrate that the effect of the adsorbate stiffness can be comparable or even larger than the mass effect, producing positive frequency shifts. The results provide methods for decoupling both opposite effects and routes for the design of resonators with high sensitivity to molecule adsorption based on either stiffness or mass effects.Peer reviewe

Origin of the response of nanomechanical resonators to bacteria adsorption

Resonant microcantilevers are being actively investigated as sensitive mass sensors for biological detection. By performing experiments of adsorption of the bacteria Escherichia coli on singly clamped microcantilevers, we demonstrate that the effect of the added mass is not the only and may not be the main origin of the response of these sensors. The experiments show that the magnitude and sign of resonance frequency shift both depend critically on the distribution of the adsorbed bacterial cells on the cantilever. We relate this behavior to the added mass that shifts the resonance to lower frequencies and the higher effective flexural rigidity of the cantilever due to the bacteria stiffness that shifts the resonance to higher frequencies. Both effects can be uncoupled by positioning the cells where each effect dominates, near the free cantilever end for measuring the added mass or near the clamping for measuring the increase of flexural rigidity. One of the authors (D.R.) acknowledges the fellowship funded by the Autonomic Community of Madrid. The FTF gene family regulates virulence and expression of SIX effectors in Fusarium oxysporum

[EN] The FTF (Fusarium transcription factor) gene family comprises a single copy gene, FTF2, which is present in all the filamentous ascomycetes analysed, and several copies of a close relative, FTF1, which is exclusive to Fusarium oxysporum. An RNAmediated gene silencing system was developed to target mRNA produced by all the FTF genes, and tested in two formae speciales: F. oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli (whose host is common bean) and F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (whose host is tomato). Quantification of the mRNA levels showed knockdown of FTF1 and FTF2 in randomly isolated transformants of both formae speciales. The attenuation of FTF expression resulted in a marked reduction in virulence, a reduced expression of several SIX (Secreted In Xylem) genes, the best studied family of effectors in F. oxysporum, and lower levels of SGE1 (Six Gene Expression 1) mRNA, the presumptive regulator of SIX expression. Moreover, the knockdown mutants showed a pattern of colonization of the host plant similar to that displayed by strains devoid of FTF1 copies (weakly virulent strains). Gene knockout of FTF2 also resulted in a reduction in virulence, but to a lesser extent. These results demonstrate the role of the FTF gene expansion, mostly the FTF1 paralogues, as a regulator of virulence in F. oxysporum and suggest that the control of effector expression is the mechanism involved

La autopublicación en las bibliotecas: revisión sistemática de la literatura

Self-publishing is not a phenomenon that has its birth in recent times but has found in digital a catalyst to gain enormous growth in last years. The work studies through a systematic review of literature (in English, SLR), if this phenomenon has penetrated the library community and in what way it has done so. The results show a topic that has taken high relevance, although with a marked geographical tendency of Anglo-Saxon character. Self-publishing appears as an element of the collection offered and as a service to users, and in all cases, we talk about positive experiences. the rest of the non-Anglo-Saxon world is conservative on this issue but has before it a new line of research and the background of the experiences of these works to satisfy this further need of its users in the best way possible

Insight into the melt processed Polylimonene oxide/Polylactic acid blends

    Get PDF
In this work, the polymerization of limonene oxide (LO) has been optimized at room temperature with two different aluminium-based catalysts [AlMeX{2,6-(CHPh2_2)2_2-4-tBu-C6_6H2_2O}] (X = Me (1), Cl (2)). A fully bio-based ether, polylimonene oxide (PLO), has been synthesized with low molecular weight and good thermal stability, being a potential sustainable polymeric additive for other bio-based and biodegradable polymers such as polylactic acid (PLA). Hence, we have explored its ability to influence the thermal, mechanical and morphological properties of PLA by preparing their blends by melt processing. The addition of a low amount of PLO led to a nearly 10 ^\circC decrease in the PLA glass transition temperature. Moreover, a decrease in the PLA melting temperature and the degree of crystallinity was observed. Interestingly, a remarkable increase in the flexibility of PLA-based films was noticed. All the results point to the existence of strong interactions between the components, suggesting their partial miscibility.Comment: Polymer Chemistry (2023

This paper proposes NAPA (Non-supervised Adaptative Publication Algorithm) a framework for a uto-tuning unicast reliable communications over DDS. We provide the NAPA design rationale, and some implementation details. After the experimental conducted evaluation, we demonstrate how using the subscriber's feedback, as NAPA does, the publisher can vary its sending rate in order to improve the overall performance in terms of end-to-end latency and throughput in DDS applications.Universidad de Granada.
