Collisional properties of ultracold K-Rb mixtures
We determine the inter-species s-wave triplet scattering length a3 for all
K-Rb isotopic mixtures by measuring the cross-section for collisions between
41K and 87Rb in different temperature regimes. The positive value
a3=+163(+57,-12)a0 ensures the stability of binary 41K-87Rb Bose-Einstein
condensates. For the fermion-boson mixture 40K-87Rb we obtain a large and
negative scattering length which implies an efficient sympathetic cooling of
the fermionic species down to the degenerate regime.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; revised version (references added and small

How Events Come Into Being: EEQT, Particle Tracks, Quantum Chaos, and Tunneling Time
In sections 1 and 2 we review Event Enhanced Quantum Theory (EEQT). In
section 3 we discuss applications of EEQT to tunneling time, and compare its
quantitative predictions with other approaches, in particular with
B\"uttiker-Larmor and Bohm trajectory approach. In section 4 we discuss quantum
chaos and quantum fractals resulting from simultaneous continuous monitoring of
several non-commuting observables. In particular we show self-similar,
non-linear, iterated function system-type, patterns arising from quantum jumps
and from the associated Markov operator. Concluding remarks pointing to
possible future development of EEQT are given in section 5.Comment: latex, 27 pages, 7 postscript figures. Paper submitted to Proc.

Impairing the production of ribosomal RNA activates mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 signalling and downstream translation factors
Ribosome biogenesis is a key process for maintaining protein synthetic capacity in dividing or growing cells, and requires coordinated production of ribosomal proteins and ribosomal RNA (rRNA), including the processing of the latter. Signalling through mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) activates all these processes. Here, we show that, in human cells, impaired rRNA processing, caused by expressing an interfering mutant of BOP1 or by knocking down components of the PeBoW complex elicits activation of mTORC1 signalling. This leads to enhanced phosphorylation of its substrates S6K1 and 4E-BP1, and stimulation of proteins involved in translation initiation and elongation. In particular, we observe both inactivation and downregulation of the eukaryotic elongation factor 2 kinase, which normally inhibits translation elongation. The latter effect involves decreased expression of the eEF2K mRNA. The mRNAs for ribosomal proteins, whose translation is positively regulated by mTORC1 signalling, also remain associated with ribosomes. Therefore, our data demonstrate that disrupting rRNA production activates mTORC1 signalling to enhance the efficiency of the translational machinery, likely to help compensate for impaired ribosome production

Hybrid de novo whole-genome assembly and annotation of the model tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta
Despite the use of Hymenolepis diminuta as a model organism in experimental parasitology, a full genome description has not yet been published. Here we present a hybrid de novo genome assembly based on complementary sequencing technologies and methods. The combination of Illumina pairedend, Illumina mate-pair and Oxford Nanopore Technology reads greatly improved the assembly of the H. diminuta genome. Our results indicate that the hybrid sequencing approach is the method of choice for obtaining high-quality data. The fnal genome assembly is 177Mbp with contig N50 size of 75kbp and a scafold N50 size of 2.3Mbp. We obtained one of the most complete cestode genome assemblies and annotated 15,169 potential protein-coding genes. The obtained data may help explain cestode gene function and better clarify the evolution of its gene families, and thus the adaptive features evolved during millennia of co-evolution with their hosts
GSTP1 c.313A>G polymorphism in Russian and Polish athletes
© 2017 the American Physiological Society. The GSTP1 gene encodes glutathione S-transferase P1, which is a member of the glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), a family of enzymes playing an important role in detoxification and in the antioxidant defense system. There is some evidence indicating that GSTP1 c.313A>G polymorphism may be beneficial for exercise performance. Therefore, we decided to verify the association between the frequency of GSTP1 c.313A>G variants, physical performance, and athletes’ status in two cohorts: in a group of Russian athletes (n = 507) and in an independent population of Polish athletes (n = 510) in a replication study. The initial association study conducted with the Russian athletes revealed that the frequency of the minor G allele was significantly higher in all athletes than in controls; that was confirmed in the replication study of Polish athletes. In the combined cohort, the differences between athletes (n = 1017) and controls (n = 1246) were even more pronounced (32.7 vs 25.0%, P G single nucleotide polymorphism is associated with improved endurance performance. These observations could support the hypothesis that the GSTP1 G allele may improve exercise performance by better elimination of exercise-induced ROS
A Catching Trap for All Antiproton Seasons
We describe the origin, development, and status of the Los Alamos antiproton
catching trap. Originally designed for the antiproton gravity experiment, it
now is clear that this device can be a source of low-energy antiprotons for a
wide range of physics, both on site, at CERN, and also off site.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, 6 figures available upon request, In honor of

Heating of nuclei with energetic anti-protons
International audienceHigh-energy γ rays associated with the decay of the giant dipole resonance have been measured for two fusion reactions leading to the 140Sm compound nucleus at an excitation energy of 71 MeV. The observed yield increases with the asymmetry in the ratios of the number of neutrons to protons in the entrance channel. This is interpreted as resulting from giant dipole phonons excited at the moment of collision in an N/Z asymmetric reaction
