    Double-pulse Nd:YAG-CO2 LIBS Excitation for Bulk and Trace Analytes

    Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy [LIBS] is a commonly used technique for multi-element analyses for various applications such as space exploration, nuclear forensics, environmental analysis, process monitoring. The advantages of the LIBS technique include robustness, ease of use, field portability, and real-time, non-invasive multi-element analyses. However, in comparison to other lab based analytical techniques, it suffers from low precision and low sensitivity. In order to overcome these drawbacks, various approaches have been used, including double-pulse LIBS [DPLIBS]. Typically, various wavelength combinations of two Nd: yttrium aluminum garnet [YAG] lasers have been used for DPLIBS. However, the use of long wavelength (CO2) laser in combination with Nd:YAG laser has not been sufficiently studied. In this study, signal enhancement mechanisms in Nd:YAG:CO2 DPLIBS are investigated. Nd:YAG laser pulse at 1064 nm was used as pre-ablation laser while CO2 laser at 10.6 μm was used as reheating laser pulse. The results exhibit significant improvement in sensitivity of both bulk and trace analytes in the sample using DPLIBS as compared to conventional single-pulse LIBS [SPLIBS]. The bulk and trace analytes used for comparing figures of merit in the brass sample were Cu and Fe emission lines, respectively. Pre-pulse energies ranging from 20 to 120 mJ from a 1064 nm Nd: YAG laser reheated by a 10.6 μm TEA CO2 laser at constant energy of 400 mJ aligned in near collinear geometry. The observed signal intensity and signal-to-background ratio of bulk analyte as well as trace analyte increased significantly. In order to understand signal enhancement mechanisms, various experimental parameters apart from pre-pulse energy were also studied, including inter-pulse delay and ICCD gate delay. Time resolved studies showed that persistence of neutral lines increases by ~10 times for DPLIBS as compared to SPLIBS. Plasma was characterized by estimation of excitation temperature and electron density using the Boltzmann method and Stark broadening method, respectively. Plasma temperature was found to be higher for DPLIBS, which shows that reheating mechanism is dominant mechanism for signal enhancement and increased persistence in YAG:CO2 DPLIBS. The mechanisms involved in signal enhancement and persistence of neutral and ionic species from bulk and trace analyte are presented and their implications to improving figures of merit are discussed

    Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound treatment for essential tremor shows sustained efficacy: a meta-analysis

    Although magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a viable treatment option for essential tremor, some studies note a diminished treatment benefit over time. A PubMed search was performed adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies were included if hand tremor scores (HTS), total Clinical Rating Scale for Tremor (CRST) scores, or Quality of Life in Essential Tremor Questionnaire (QUEST) scores at regular intervals following MRgFUS treatment for essential tremor were documented. Data analyses included a random effects model of meta-analysis and mixed-effects model of meta-regression. Twenty-one articles reporting HTS for 395 patients were included. Mean pre-operative HTS was 19.2 ± 5.0. Mean HTS at 3 months post-treatment was 7.4 ± 5.0 (61.5% improvement, p \u3c 0.001). Treatment effect was mildly decreased at 36 months at 9.1 ± 5.4 (8.8% reduction). Meta-regression of time since treatment as a modifier of HTS revealed a downward trend in effect size, though this was not statistically significant (p = 0.208). Only 4 studies included follow-up ≥ 24 months. Thirteen included articles reported total CRST scores with standardized follow-up for 250 patients. Mean pre-operative total CRST score decreased by 46.2% at 3 months post-treatment (p \u3c 0.001). Additionally, mean QUEST scores at 3 months post-treatment significantly improved compared to baseline (p \u3c 0.001). HTS is significantly improved from baseline ≥ 24 months post-treatment and possibly ≥ 48 months post-treatment. There is a current paucity of long-term CRST and QUEST score reporting in the literature

    Doube-pulse Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy of Multi-element Sample Containing Low- And High-Z Analytes

    Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a portable, remote, non-invasive analytical technique which effectively distinguishes neutral and ionic species for a range of low- to high-Z elements in a multi-element target. Subsequently, LIBS holds potential in special nuclear material (SNM) sensing and nuclear forensics requiring minimal sample preparation and detecting isotopic shifts which allows for differentiation in SNM (namely U) enrichment levels. Feasible applications include not only nonproliferation and homeland security but also nuclear fuel prospecting and industrial safeguard endorsement. Elements of higher mass with complex atomic structures, such as U, however, result in crowded emission spectra with LIBS, and characteristic emission lines are challenging to discern. Preliminary research suggests double-pulse LIBS (DPLIBS) improves signal sensitivity for analytes of lower atomic mass over conventional single-pulse LIBS (SPLIBS). This study investigates signal sensitivity for low- and high-Z analytes in a glass matrix containing U (1.3%) comparing DPLIBS to SPLIBS. DPLIBS involves sequential firing of 1064 Nd: YAG (FWHM 9 ns) pre-pulse and 10.6 µm TEA CO2 (FWHM 50-100 ns) heating pulse in near collinear geometry; SPLIBS entails only the Nd:YAG laser. Optimization of experimental parameters including inter-pulse delay and energy follows identification of characteristic lines for bulk analytes Ca, Na, and Si and trace analyte U for both DPLIBS and SPLIBS. Temporally-integrated excitation temperature and electron density as well as neutral-to-ionic species ratio constitute relative figures of merit for both DPLIBS and SPLIBS plasma characterization. Temporally-resolved studies provide insight into high-Z U analyte persistence and signal enhancement with DPLIBS as compared to low-Z bulk analytes. The study predicts and discusses optimal emission conditions of U lines and relative figures of merit in both SPLIBS and DPLIBS

    Chandra X-Ray Observatory Observations of the Globular Cluster M71

    We observed the nearby, low-density globular cluster M71 (NGC 6838) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory to study its faint X-ray populations. Five X-ray sources were found inside the cluster core radius, including the known eclipsing binary millisecond pulsar (MSP) PSR J1953+1846A. The X-ray light curve of the source coincident with this MSP shows marginal evidence for periodicity at the binary period of 4.2 h. Its hard X-ray spectrum and luminosity resemble those of other eclipsing binary MSPs in 47 Tuc, suggesting a similar shock origin of the X-ray emission. A further 24 X-ray sources were found within the half-mass radius, reaching to a limiting luminosity of 1.5 10^30 erg/s (0.3-8 keV). From a radial distribution analysis, we find that 18+/-6 of these 29 sources are associated with M71, somewhat more than predicted, and that 11+/-6 are background sources, both galactic and extragalactic. M71 appears to have more X-ray sources between L_X=10^30--10^31 erg/s than expected by extrapolating from other studied clusters using either mass or collision frequency.     Biodiversity loss underlies the dilution effect of biodiversity

    The dilution effect predicts increasing biodiversity to reduce the risk of infection, but the generality of this effect remains unresolved. Because biodiversity loss generates predictable changes in host community competence, we hypothesised that biodiversity loss might drive the dilution effect. We tested this hypothesis by reanalysing four previously published meta-analyses that came to contradictory conclusions regarding generality of the dilution effect. In the context of biodiversity loss, our analyses revealed a unifying pattern: dilution effects were inconsistently observed for natural biodiversity gradients, but were commonly observed for biodiversity gradients generated by disturbances causing losses of biodiversity. Incorporating biodiversity loss into tests of generality of the dilution effect further indicated that scale-dependency may strengthen the dilution effect only when biodiversity gradients are driven by biodiversity loss. Together, these results help to resolve one of the most contentious issues in disease ecology: the generality of the dilution effect.Non peer reviewe

    Comparison of community-wide, integrated mass drug administration strategies for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis: a cost-eff ectiveness modelling study

    Background More than 1·5 billion people are aff ected by schistosomiasis or soil-transmitted helminthiasis. WHO’s recommendations for mass drug administration (MDA) against these parasitic infections emphasise treatment of school-aged children, using separate treatment guidelines for these two helminthiases groups. We aimed to evaluate the cost-eff ectiveness of expanding integrated MDA to the entire community in four settings in Côte d’Ivoire. Methods We extended previously published, dynamic, age-structured models of helminthiases transmission to simulate costs and disability averted with integrated MDA (of praziquantel and albendazole) for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis. We calibrated the model to data for prevalence and intensity of species-specifi c helminth infection from surveys undertaken in four communities in Côte d’Ivoire between March, 1997, and September, 2010. We simulated a 15-year treatment programme with 75% coverage in only school-aged children; school-aged children and preschool-aged children; adults; and the entire community. Treatment costs were estimated at US074forschoolagedchildrenand0·74 for school-aged children and 1·74 for preschool-aged children and adults. The incremental costeff ectiveness ratio (ICER) was calculated in 2014 US dollars per disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) averted. Findings Expanded community-wide treatment was highly cost eff ective compared with treatment of only school-aged children (ICER 167perDALYaverted)andWHOguidelines(ICER167 per DALY averted) and WHO guidelines (ICER 127 per DALY averted), and remained highly cost eff ective even if treatment costs for preschool-aged children and adults were ten times greater than those for school-aged children. Community-wide treatment remained highly cost eff ective even when elimination of helminth infections was not achieved. These fi ndings were robust across the four diverse communities in Côte d’Ivoire, only one of which would have received annual MDA for both schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis under the latest WHO guidelines. Treatment every 6 months was also highly cost eff ective in three out of four communities. Interpretation Integrated, community-wide MDA programmes for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis can be highly cost eff ective, even in communities with low disease burden in any helminth group. These results support an urgent need to re-evaluate current global guidelines for helminthiases control programmes to include community-wide treatment, increased treatment frequency, and consideration for lowered prevalence thresholds for integrated treatment

    The Precision Array for Probing the Epoch of Reionization: 8 Station Results

    We are developing the Precision Array for Probing the Epoch of Reionization (PAPER) to detect 21cm emission from the early Universe, when the first stars and galaxies were forming. We describe the overall experiment strategy and architecture and summarize two PAPER deployments: a 4-antenna array in the low-RFI environment of Western Australia and an 8-antenna array at our prototyping site in Green Bank, WV. From these activities we report on system performance, including primary beam model verification, dependence of system gain on ambient temperature, measurements of receiver and overall system temperatures, and characterization of the RFI environment at each deployment site. We present an all-sky map synthesized between 139 MHz and 174 MHz using data from both arrays that reaches down to 80 mJy (4.9 K, for a beam size of 2.15e-5 steradians at 154 MHz), with a 10 mJy (620 mK) thermal noise level that indicates what would be achievable with better foreground subtraction. We calculate angular power spectra (CC_\ell) in a cold patch and determine them to be dominated by point sources, but with contributions from galactic synchrotron emission at lower radio frequencies and angular wavemodes. Although the cosmic variance of foregrounds dominates errors in these power spectra, we measure a thermal noise level of 310 mK at =100\ell=100 for a 1.46-MHz band centered at 164.5 MHz. This sensitivity level is approximately three orders of magnitude in temperature above the level of the fluctuations in 21cm emission associated with reionization.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, submitted to AJ.     Factors in patients’ experience of hospital care: Evidence from California, 2009–2011

    The use of measures of patient-centered care to evaluate hospital care is mandated by The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. Using three years of data from 315 California acute-care hospitals and data collected from patients via the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, we seek to evaluate patients’ hospital-care experience by (1) analyzing patients’ experience-of-care scores in light of these hospitals’ patient profiles, structural characteristics, and outcomes in 2011, and (2) determining and analyzing the extent of changes in patients’ experience of care over the three-year period 2009–2011. For 2011, we find significant variation in patients’ experience-of-care scores associated with hospitals’ different patient profiles and structural characteristics. In spite of these single-year differences, virtually all aspects of patients’ experience of care showed improvement over the 2009-2011 period

    A Review of Distributions on the String Landscape

    We review some basic flux vacua counting techniques and results, focusing on the distributions of properties over different regions of the landscape of string vacua and assessing the phenomenological implications. The topics we discuss include: an overview of how moduli are stabilized and how vacua are counted; the applicability of effective field theory; the uses of and differences between probabilistic and statistical analysis (and the relation to the anthropic principle); the distribution of various parameters on the landscape, including cosmological constant, gauge group rank, and SUSY-breaking scale; "friendly landscapes"; open string moduli; the (in)finiteness of the number of phenomenologically viable vacua; etc. At all points, we attempt to connect this study to the phenomenology of vacua which are experimentally viable.Comment: Invited review, IJMP A.     Spectroscopy of High-Redshift Supernovae from the ESSENCE Project: The First Two Years

    We present the results of spectroscopic observations of targets discovered during the first two years of the ESSENCE project. The goal of ESSENCE is to use a sample of ~200 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) at moderate redshifts (0.2 < z < 0.8) to place constraints on the equation of state of the Universe. Spectroscopy not only provides the redshifts of the objects, but also confirms that some of the discoveries are indeed SNe Ia. This confirmation is critical to the project, as techniques developed to determine luminosity distances to SNe Ia depend upon the knowledge that the objects at high redshift are the same as the ones at low redshift. We describe the methods of target selection and prioritization, the telescopes and detectors, and the software used to identify objects. The redshifts deduced from spectral matching of high-redshift SNe Ia with low-redshift SNe Ia are consistent with those determined from host-galaxy spectra. We show that the high-redshift SNe Ia match well with low-redshift templates. We include all spectra obtained by the ESSENCE project, including 52 SNe Ia, 5 core-collapse SNe, 12 active galactic nuclei, 19 galaxies, 4 possibly variable stars, and 16 objects with uncertain identifications.Comment: 38 pages, 9 figures (many with multiple parts), submitted to A
