    I’ll (Not) be Home for Christmas: The Impact of the Pandemic on Evaluation Apprehension and Self-Disclosure during the 2020 Holidays

    Social distancing was encouraged and sometimes enforced via lockdowns during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, people still needed to socialize to combat feelings of loneliness, so many turned to social media. While online interactions were encouraged, sharing about behaviors considered unsafe during the pandemic was met with increased shaming and vitriol. This study focuses on understanding whether and why online self-disclosure behaviors changed during the holiday season – a time many people believe should be spent with family and loved ones – because of the pandemic. We collected two rounds of survey data in December 2020 from Facebook and Instagram users. Our results show significant differences between the kinds of information disclosed online between 2019 and 2020. We also found that evaluation apprehension moderated the relationship between predicted and reported behaviors for socially desirable information – such as wearing a mask and working from home

    A Sensual Retreat From an Urban Landscape

    The visual sense has been given predominance in many parts of experience in the Western culture. The commodity of visual images has resulted in architecture being critiqued primarily in the form of printed and digital media, designed with only one sense in mind. However, architecture is inescapably sensual by nature and building cannot be reduced as objects to depict abstract architectural ideas. The intent of this thesis explores the sensual experiences of space through a series of choreographed moments. The qualitative aspects of light, sound, materiality, and water are studied and cued within these moments to enrich our bodily dialogue with space. This sequence will occur in Downtown Silver Spring, MD where a proposed civic park and spa will induce a multi-sensorial experience while integrating architecture to its urban landscape

    The “Journey” of Doctoral Study in Applied Psychology: Lived Experiences of Students in Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology

    A qualitative methodology was adopted to explore the lived experiences of doctoral level students in applied psychology. A total of 15 students ranging in age from 24 to 43, who were at varying levels of their doctoral education, participated in individual semi-structured interviews exploring themes related to influences for the pursuit of graduate study, experiences in their program of study, and general reflections of the graduate school journey. All interviews were conducted from a constructivist-interpretivist model, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using a phenomenological coding approach (Creswell, 2012; Moustakas, 1994). Emergent broad themes included antecedents leading to graduate study, current experience of doctoral education, and reflections on the doctoral experience. Implications for future research are discussed and recommendations for graduate programs based on findings are provided

    Palaeomagnetic re-investigation of early permian rift basalts from the Baoshan block, SW China: Constraints on the site-of-origin of the gondwana-derived eastern cimmerian terranes

    A palaeomagnetic investigation was carried out on a series of rift basalts (Woniusi Formation) that accumulated on the Baoshan block (SW China) in the Early Permian, the aim being to provide quantitative palaeogeographical information on the eastern Cimmerian terrane as it detached from eastern Gondwana. Reliable data were obtained from four locations/28 individual cooling units, and when combined with the findings of an earlier study (three locations/19 sites) indicate that breakup occurred at 41.9°S (with errors, 34.2-51.2°S). Using this information, we fit Baoshan against Gondwana within a narrow longitudinal belt close to where northeast Greater India and northwest Australia were once in close proximity. Furthermore, we suggest that Sibumasu (Simao-Burma-Malyasia-Sumatra; the largest of the eastern Cimmerian blocks) lay directly to the east, offshore of Australia; Qiangtang and Lhasa almost certainly sat to the west (off northern Greater India-SE Arabia), but we are uncertain as to their exact configuration. Our findings are compared with several rather different models that have been published in recent years. The new palaeomagnetic constraint highlights the flexibility authors currently have in reconstructing the region, principally because of the overall lack of similar high-quality data from the various blocks. We explain how new data could resolve these ambiguities, thereby offering more robust explanations for eastern Gondwana's late Palaeozoic development

    Purpose: To determine the capability of the distal radius and ulna (DRU) classification for predicting the scoliosis progression risk within 1 year in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and to develop simple recommendations for follow-up durations. Methods: Medical records of patients with AIS at two tertiary scoliosis referral centers were retrospectively reviewed for their DRU classification and major curve Cobb angles. Baseline DRU grades and Cobb angles with subsequent 1-year follow-up curve magnitudes were studied for scoliosis progression, which was defined as exacerbation of the Cobb angle by ≥ 6°. The relationship between DRU classification and scoliosis progression risk within 1 year was investigated. Patients were divided into three groups according to the Cobb angle (10°-19°, 20°-29°, ≥ 30°). Results: Of the 205 patients with 283 follow-up visits, scoliosis progression occurred in 86 patients (90 follow-up visits). Radius and ulna grades were significantly related to scoliosis progression (p 80% of patients within 1 year. Curve progression was less likely for grades R9 and U7. Most patients with more mature DRU grades did not experience progression, even with Cobb angles ≥ 30°. Conclusion: With R6, R7, and U5, scoliosis may progress within a short period; therefore, careful follow-up with short intervals within 6 months is necessary.     Associations among Human-Associated Fecal Contamination, Microcystis aeruginosa, and Microcystin at Lake Erie Beaches

    Lake Erie beaches exhibit impaired water quality due to fecal contamination and cyanobacterial blooms, though few studies address potential relationships between these two public health hazards. Using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), Microcystis aeruginosa was monitored in conjunction with a human-associated fecal marker (Bacteroides fragilis group; g-Bfra), microcystin, and water quality parameters at two beaches to evaluate their potential associations. During the summer of 2010, water samples were collected 32 times from both Euclid and Villa Angela beaches. The phycocyanin intergenic spacer (PC-IGS) and the microcystin-producing (mcyA) gene in M. aeruginosa were quantified with qPCR. PC-IGS and mcyA were detected in 50.0% and 39.1% of samples, respectively, and showed increased occurrences after mid-August. Correlation and regression analyses showed that water temperature was negatively correlated with M. aeruginosa markers and microcystin. The densities of mcyA and the g-Bfra were predicted by nitrate, implicating fecal contamination as contributing to the growth of M. aeruginosa by nitrate loading. Microcystin was correlated with mcyA (r = 0.413, p \u3c 0.01), suggesting toxin-producing M. aeruginosa populations may significantly contribute to microcystin production. Additionally, microcystin was correlated with total phosphorus (r = 0.628, p \u3c 0.001), which was higher at Euclid (p \u3c 0.05), possibly contributing to higher microcystin concentrations at Euclid

    Application of fuzzy integrated FMEA with product lifetime consideration for new product development in flexible electronics industry

    Purpose: the aim of this paper is to minimize the risks of new product development and shorten time-to-market, particularly for high-tech enterprise where the complexity of the product generates vast amount of failure mode. Design/methodology/approach: first, the concept of Critical Consideration Factor (CCF) is introduced based on product-specific technical characteristics, expected lifetime, and yield requirement to identify and prioritize the critical failure mode in the subsequent Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), followed by process characterization on the high-risk failure mode and Critical Parameter Management (CPM) practice to realize a robust mass production system of the developed technology. The application on the development of advanced flexible substrate and surface finishes fabrication technique is presented. Findings: through the proposed methodology, the risk level of each potential failure mode can be accurately quantified to identify the critical variables. With process characterization, reliability of the product is ensured. Consequently, significant reduction in development resources and time-to-market can be achieved. Practical implications: the development strategy allows high tech enterprises to achieve a balanced ecosystem in which value created through adaption of new technology/product can be thoroughly captured through commercialization in a timely manner with no field failure. Originality/value: the proposed development strategy utilizes a unique approach with thorough considerations that enables high tech enterprise to deliver new product with rapid time-to-market without sacrificing product lifetime reliability, which is key to achieve competitive advantage in the highly dynamic market.Peer Reviewe

    The Stable Entropy Hypothesis and Entropy-Aware Decoding: An Analysis and Algorithm for Robust Natural Language Generation

    State-of-the-art language generation models can degenerate when applied to open-ended generation problems such as text completion, story generation, or dialog modeling. This degeneration usually shows up in the form of incoherence, lack of vocabulary diversity, and self-repetition or copying from the context. In this paper, we postulate that ``human-like'' generations usually lie in a narrow and nearly flat entropy band, and violation of these entropy bounds correlates with degenerate behavior. Our experiments show that this stable narrow entropy zone exists across models, tasks, and domains and confirm the hypothesis that violations of this zone correlate with degeneration. We then use this insight to propose an entropy-aware decoding algorithm that respects these entropy bounds resulting in less degenerate, more contextual, and "human-like" language generation in open-ended text generation settings
