    La complejidad de la dimensión física en la problemática costera del Golfo de Urabá, Colombia.

    El Golfo de Urabá es un sector litoral estratégico para Colombia. El papel de la zona costera en las obras de infraestructura y los planes de desarrollo del área es un elemento prioritario que debe ser considerado y analizado en detalle. Los procesos de erosión y sedimentación que ocurren actualmente se han reconocido desde hace varias décadas como uno de los ejes de sus problemas ambientales. En este trabajo se hace un análisis de la complejidad física del problema a través de la integración del conocimiento actual y el análisis de datos obtenidos en el Crucero Oceanográfico Urabá 1, con el fin de detectar patrones a escala del Golfo y vacíos en la información así como obtener una visión integrada de los procesos costeros con las dinámicas de transporte. En el sector norte dominan los procesos erosivos que tienen diferentes connotaciones en la costa oriental y occidental. Las direcciones dominantes de deriva no permiten que los sedimentos arenosos del río Atrato se distribuyan hacia estas costas, mientras que se acumulan en el sector sur. Hay diferentes aspectos sobre la dispersión y acumulación de sedimentos que requieren mayor estudio, dentro de los cuales resalta el caso de la sedimentación de Bahia Colombia, vital para el transporte del producto regional.The Gulf of Uraba is an strategic littoral region for Colombia. The coastal zone role on infrastructure and development planning is a prionty and should be considered and analyzed in detail. The erosion - sedimentation processes in the gulf have been recognized since several decades ago as one of the central axes of the environmental problems there. This work presents an analysis of the physical complexity of the problem through an integration of the present knowledge and new data collected during the Oceanographic Cruise Urabá 1. The goal is to obtain an integrated vision of the coastal processes and the transport dynamics in the gulf. Towards the north region erosion is dominant with different connotations on the east and western flanks. Dominant littoral drift direction doesn't allow sand sediments from Atrato river to be distributed towards these coasts, while they are accumulated at the south region. There are several issues about sediment dispersion and accumulation that requiere further studies, among these, sedimentation of Colombia Bay, which is vital for the regional product transport

    Thermodynamic Simulation of the RDX-Aluminum Interface Using ReaxFF Molecular Dynamics

    We use reactive molecular dynamics (RMD) simulations to study the interface between cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX) and aluminum (Al) with different oxide layers to elucidate the effect of nanosized Al on thermal decomposition of RDX. A published ReaxFF force field for C/H/N/O elements was retrained to incorporate Al interactions and then used in RMD simulations to characterize compound energetic materials. We find that the predicted adsorption energies for RDX on the Al(111) surface and the apparent activation energies of RDX and RDX/Al are in agreement with ab initio calculations. The Al(111) surface-assisted decomposition of RDX occurs spontaneously without potential barriers, but the decomposition rate becomes slow when compared with that for RDX powder. We also find that the Al(111) surface with an oxide layer (Al oxide) slightly increases the potential barriers for decomposition of RDX molecules, while α-Al_2O_3(0001) retards thermal decomposition of RDX, due to the changes in thermal decomposition kinetics. The most likely mechanism for the thermal decomposition of RDX powder is described by the Avrami–Erofeev equation, with n = 3/4, as random nucleation and subsequent growth model. Although the decomposition mechanism of RDX molecules in the RDX/Al matrix complies with three-dimensional diffusion, Jander’s equation for RDX(210)/Al oxide and the Zhuralev–Lesokin–Tempelman (Z-L-T) equation for RDX(210)/Al_2O_3(0001) provide a more accurate description. We conclude that the origin of these differences in dynamic behavior is due to the variations in the oxide layer morphologies

    Production and vegetative growth of coffee trees under fertilization and shade levels

    It is difficult to separate the effects of light reduction versus nutrient and water competition in agroforestry systems. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of shading and fertilizer supply on the vegetative development and yield of Coffea arabica over six years. The coffee trees were covered with shade screens (photosynthetically active radiation reduction up to 48%) and fertilized from 100 to 40% of the recommended amount from 2001 on. Leaf area, number of leaves, number of nodes, leaf area per branch and, yield were determined. Although no effect of fertilization was found, shading influenced the number of nodes, leaf area and production from the third year on. The number of nodes and yield decreased as shading increased. The effect of the yield bienniallity was more evident in the unshaded trees, which yielded an average of 2,646 kg ha¹. The trees under 48% shading yielded an average of 2,094 kg ha¹. After 2004 the leaf area per branch increased as the shade increased, at the end of both the maximum and minimum growth periods. During the first three years, the coffee trees do not change their vegetative or productive characteristics as a response to shading. The shade effects become more intense after the beginning of the higher yield period. The shaded coffee trees have a larger leaf area and a smaller number of nodes than the coffee trees under full sun. The yield decreases as photosynthetically active radiation limitation increases, and yield bienniallity is less intense in shaded trees.Em sistemas agroflorestais é difícil separar os efeitos da competição por luz daquela por água e nutrientes. O objetivo do experimento foi avaliar o efeito do sombreamento e do fornecimento de fertilizantes sobre o desenvolvimento vegetativo e a produtividade de cafeeiros arábica ao longo de seis anos. Os cafeeiros foram cobertos com telas sombreadoras (redução da radiação fotosinteticamente ativa em até 48%) e fertilizados de 100 até 40% da recomendação. Foram determinados a área da folha, o número de folhas, o número de nós, a área foliar por ramo e a produtividade dos cafeeiros. Embora não houvesse efeito da fertilização, o sombreamento influenciou o número de nós, a área da folha e a produção a partir do terceiro ano. O número de nós e a produtividade reduziram conforme aumentou o sombreamento. Cafeeiros sob pleno sol apresentaram maior bienalidade da produção e produtividade média de 2646 kg ha¹. Cafeeiros sob 48% de sombreamento produziram em média 2094 kg ha¹. Após três anos a área foliar aumentou com o aumento do sombreamento, tanto no final do período de maior quanto de menor crescimento. Nos três primeiros anos, os cafeeiros não diferiram nas características vegetativas ou reprodutivas devido ao sombreamento. Os efeitos do sombreamento tornam-se mais intensos após o início do período de altas produtividades. Cafeeiros sombreados apresentam folhas maiores e menor número de nós do que cafeeiros sob pleno sol. Nos anos de alta produtividade esta decresce com o aumento do sombreamento e a bienalidade é menos intensa nos cafeeiros sombreados

    Characterization of rice yield based on biomass and SPAD-based leaf nitrogen for large genotype plots

    The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) images for biomass and nitrogen estimation offers multiple opportunities for improving rice yields. UAV images provide detailed, high-resolution visual information about vegetation properties, enabling the identification of phenotypic characteristics for selecting the best varieties, improving yield predictions, and supporting ecosystem monitoring and conservation efforts. In this study, an analysis of biomass and nitrogen is conducted on 59 rice plots selected at random from a more extensive trial comprising 400 rice genotypes. A UAV acquires multispectral reflectance channels across a rice field of subplots containing different genotypes. Based on the ground-truth data, yields are characterized for the 59 plots and correlated with the Vegetation Indices (VIs) calculated from the photogrammetric mapping. The VIs are weighted by the segmentation of the plants from the soil and used as a feature matrix to estimate, via machine learning models, the biomass and nitrogen of the selected rice genotypes. The genotype IR 93346 presented the highest yield with a biomass gain of 10,252.78 kg/ha and an average daily biomass gain above 49.92 g/day. The VIs with the highest correlations with the ground-truth variables were NDVI and SAVI for wet biomass, GNDVI and NDVI for dry biomass, GNDVI and SAVI for height, and NDVI and ARVI for nitrogen. The machine learning model that performed best in estimating the variables of the 59 plots was the Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) model with a correlation factor of 0.98 for wet biomass, 0.99 for dry biomass, and 1 for nitrogen. The results presented demonstrate that it is possible to characterize the yields of rice plots containing different genotypes through ground-truth data and VIs

    Inhibition of Hotspot Formation in Polymer Bonded Explosives Using an Interface Matching Low Density Polymer Coating at the Polymer–Explosive Interface

    In order to elucidate how shocks in heterogeneous materials affect decomposition and reactive processes, we used the ReaxFF reactive force field in reactive molecules dynamics (RMD) simulations of the effects of strong shocks (2.5 and 3.5 km/s) on a prototype polymer bonded explosive (PBX) consisting of cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX) bonded to hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB). We showed earlier that shock propagation from the high density RDX to the low density polymer (RDX ? Poly) across a nonplanar periodic interface (sawtooth) leads to a hotspot at the initial asperity but no additional hotspot at the second asperity. This hotspot arises from shear along the interface induced by relaxation of the stress at the asperity. We now report the case for shock propagation from the low density polymer to the high density RDX (Poly ? RDX) where we find a hotspot at the initial asperity and a second more dramatic hotspot at the second asperity. This second hotspot is enhanced due to shock wave convergence from shock wave interaction with nonplanar interfaces. We consider that this second hotspot is likely the source of the detonation in realistic PBX systems. We showed how these hotspots depend on the density mismatch between the RDX and polymer and found that decreasing the density by a factor of 2 dramatically reduces the hotspot. These results suggest that to make PBX less sensitive for propellants and explosives, the binder should be designed to provide low density at the asperity in contact with the RDX. Based on these simulations, we propose a new design for an insensitive PBX in which a low density polymer coating is deposited between the RDX and the usual polymer binder. To test this idea, we simulated shock wave propagation from two opposite directions (RDX ? Poly and Poly ? RDX) through the interface matched PBX (IM-PBX) material containing a 3 nm coating of low density (0.48 g/cm3) polymer.     Cause of Death and Predictors of All-Cause Mortality in Anticoagulated Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation : Data From ROCKET AF

Identification of causes of death and contemporary risk factors for all-cause mortality may guide interventions. Methods and Results-In the Rivaroxaban Once Daily Oral Direct Factor Xa Inhibition Compared with Vitamin K Antagonism for Prevention of Stroke and Embolism Trial in Atrial Fibrillation (ROCKET AF) study, patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation were randomized to rivaroxaban or dose-adjusted warfarin. Cox proportional hazards regression with backward elimination identified factors at randomization that were independently associated with all-cause mortality in the 14 171 participants in the intention-to-treat population. The median age was 73 years, and the mean CHADS(2) score was 3.5. Over 1.9 years of median follow-up, 1214 (8.6%) patients died. Kaplan-Meier mortality rates were 4.2% at 1 year and 8.9% at 2 years. The majority of classified deaths (1081) were cardiovascular (72%), whereas only 6% were nonhemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism. No significant difference in all-cause mortality was observed between the rivaroxaban and warfarin arms (P=0.15). Methods: Data on the incidence of appendicitis from 170 countries and two different approaches were used to estimate numbers of patients who do not receive surgery: as a fixed proportion of the total unmet surgical need per country (approach 1); and based on country income status (approach 2). Indirect costs with current levels of access and local quality, and those if quality were at the standards of high-income countries, were estimated. A human capital approach was applied, focusing on the economic burden resulting from premature death and absenteeism. Results: Excess mortality was 4185 per 100 000 cases of appendicitis using approach 1 and 3448 per 100 000 using approach 2. The economic burden of continuing current levels of access and local quality was US 92492millionusingapproach1and92 492 million using approach 1 and 73 141 million using approach 2. The economic burden of not providing surgical care to the standards of high-income countries was 95004millionusingapproach1and95 004 million using approach 1 and 75 666 million using approach 2. The largest share of these costs resulted from premature death (97.7 per cent) and lack of access (97.0 per cent) in contrast to lack of quality. Conclusion: For a comparatively non-complex emergency condition such as appendicitis, increasing access to care should be prioritized. Although improving quality of care should not be neglected, increasing provision of care at current standards could reduce societal costs substantially
