Accounting Case Studies
This thesis is a combination of 11 accounting case studies. They are titled: A Tale of Two Cities, Exploring the FASB and GAAP, Presidential Debate, Tax Cuts and Job Act and Taxodus, Professional Interview, Case Competition Disney Overview, Case Competition Disney Audit Analyst, Case Competition Disney Tax Advisor, Case Competition Disney Advisory Consultant, Case Competition Disney’s Equity Position, and The Financial Crisis of 2008.These cases cover a variety of topics in the accounting and professional world. Five of the cases contain research that pertained to a case competition in which I was placed on a team and tasked with creating a hypothetical presentation for The Walt Disney Company. My team consisted of Kath Sudduth, Mark Miller, Eli Dykes, Matthew Stersic, and myself. In conclusion, this thesis is a combination of my work over the course of year on a variety of business and accounting topics
The Grate Solution: Simplifying Viking Oven Packaging Processes
The following report details work completed to improve the Viking Oven Corporation’s gas oven assembly line. The current state of the line hosts an unreliable system for packaging oven grates. Viking manufactures two types of gas ovens on the same line: open burner and closed burner. These different types require different prepackaged grates to be included in the final assembly area. Viking estimates that the wrong grates are sent to the customer ten percent of the time. The following report presents research, brainstorming, problem-solving techniques, and proposed solutions to the problem. The proposed solution would solve the problem at little to no cost for Viking Oven and save them from having to resend grates to unsatisfied customers
Reading Between the Lines: An Intervention Tool for Teaching Theory of Mind
Theory of mind (ToM) is a growing area of interest for speech language pathologists working with children with pragmatic language deficits, especially those with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Narrative intervention has been a particularly fruitful avenue for encouraging ToM development. This project attempts to compile the best strategies for ToM intervention into a program centered on picture books; to justify the tool according to evidence-based practice guidelines; and to assemble background information, materials and instructions to make it accessible to clinicians. Research about ToM’s characteristics, its role in ASD and its impact on language are reviewed, and strategies for ToM intervention, including guidelines for assessment, are discussed. Reading Between the Lines was developed with school-aged children with ASD in mind, but may be of use to clinicians working with children of varied ages, diagnoses and levels of ToM development
How do antidepressants affect sexual function?
Evidence-based answer: patients treated with elective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and the serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) venlafaxine have significantly higher rates of overall sexual dysfunction--including desire, arousal, and orgasm--than patients treated with placebo (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B, randomized controlled trials [RCTs] with heterogeneous results). Patients treated with bupropion, a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI), have rates of overall sexual dysfunction comparable to placebo (SOR: B, RCTs with heterogeneous results)
A longitudinal study of financial difficulties and mental health in a national sample of British undergraduate students
Previous research has shown a relationship between financial difficulties and poor mental health in students, but most research is cross-sectional. To examine longitudinal relationships over time between financial variables and mental health in students. A national sample of 454 first year British undergraduate students completed measures of mental health and financial variables at up to four time points across a year. Cross-sectional relationships were found between poorer mental health and female gender, having a disability and non-white ethnicity. Greater financial difficulties predicted greater depression and stress cross-sectionally, and also predicted poorer anxiety, global mental health and alcohol dependence over time. Depression worsened over time for those who had considered abandoning studies or not coming to university for financial reasons, and there were effects for how students viewed their student loan. Anxiety and alcohol dependence also predicted worsening financial situation suggesting a bi-directional relationship. Financial difficulties appear to lead to poor mental health in students with the possibility of a vicious cycle occurring

The Host Galaxies of Gamma-Ray Bursts I: ISM Properties of Ten Nearby Long-Duration GRB Hosts
We present the first observations from a large-scale survey of nearby (z < 1)
long-duration gamma-ray burst (LGRB) host galaxies, which consist of eight
rest-frame optical spectra obtained at Keck and Magellan. Along with two host
galaxy observations from the literature, we use optical emission line
diagnostics to determine metallicities, ionization parameters, young stellar
population ages, and star formation rates. We compare the LGRB host
environments to a variety of local and intermediate-redshift galaxy
populations, as well as the newest grid of stellar population synthesis and
photoionization models generated with the Starburst99/Mappings codes. With
these comparisons we investigate whether the GRB host galaxies are consistent
with the properties of the general galaxy population, and therefore whether
they may be used as reliable tracers of star formation. We find that LGRB host
galaxies generally have low-metallicity ISM environments out to z ~ 1. The ISM
properties of our GRB hosts, including metallicity, ionization parameter, and
young stellar population age, are significantly different from the general
galaxy population, host galaxies of nearby broad-lined Type Ic supernovae, and
nearby metal-poor galaxies.Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in A
