Predicting Blood Glucose with an LSTM and Bi-LSTM Based Deep Neural Network
A deep learning network was used to predict future blood glucose levels, as
this can permit diabetes patients to take action before imminent hyperglycaemia
and hypoglycaemia. A sequential model with one long-short-term memory (LSTM)
layer, one bidirectional LSTM layer and several fully connected layers was used
to predict blood glucose levels for different prediction horizons. The method
was trained and tested on 26 datasets from 20 real patients. The proposed

The Financial Setting for FDI Inflows into The Czech Republic and Slovakia
This study examines the relationship between foreign direct investment in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and such potentially explanatory factors as trade flows, measures of economic and financial stability, and country risk. The authors find that as the Czech and Slovak Republics progress toward market economies, some policy points to consider include: transparency of markets, economic systems, social and political organizations; an increase in commerce and investment, which makes reversals of reforms less likely and the condition of financial factors that contribute to increased investment
Second harmonic generation, beam dynamics and spatial soliton generation in periodically poled KTiOPO4
Spatial solitons were investigated in periodically poled KTiOPO4 under conditions of second harmonic generation and many new features associated with soliton generation in quasi-phase-matched samples were observed. The effects on the second harmonic generation tuning curves of the beam narrowing mechanisms responsible for soliton generation were found to be dramatic. A dual mode adaptive basal-bolus advisor based on reinforcement learning
Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) and continuous glucose monitoring
(CGM) are commonly used by type 1 diabetes (T1D) patients to measure glucose
concentrations. The proposed adaptive basal-bolus algorithm (ABBA) supports
inputs from either SMBG or CGM devices to provide personalised suggestions for
the daily basal rate and prandial insulin doses on the basis of the patients'
glucose level on the previous day. The ABBA is based on reinforcement learning
(RL), a type of artificial intelligence, and was validated in silico with an
FDA-accepted population of 100 adults under different realistic scenarios
lasting three simulated months. The scenarios involve three main meals and one
bedtime snack per day, along with different variabilities and uncertainties for
insulin sensitivity, mealtime, carbohydrate amount, and glucose measurement
time. The results indicate that the proposed approach achieves comparable
performance with CGM or SMBG as input signals, without influencing the total
daily insulin dose. The results are a promising indication that AI algorithmic
approaches can provide personalised adaptive insulin optimisation and achieve

Natural radionuclides in soil profiles surrounding the largest coal-fired power plant in Serbia
This study evaluates the influence of the largest Serbian coal-fired power plant on radionuclide concentrations in soil profiles up to 50 cm in depth. Thirty soil profiles were sampled from the plant surroundings (up to 10 km distance) and analyzed using standard methods for soil physicochemical properties and gamma ray spectrometry for specific activities of natural radionuclides (K-40, Ra-226 and Th-232) Spatial and vertical distribution of radionuclides was determined and analyzed to show the relations between the specific activities in the soil and soil properties and the most influential factors of natural radionuclide variability were identified. The radiological indices for surface soil were calculated and radiological risk assessment was performed. The measured specific activities were similar to values of BACKGROUND: levels for Serbia. The sampling depth did not show any significant influence on specific activities of natural radionuclides. The strongest predictor of specific activities of the investigated radionuclides was soil granulometry. All parameters of radiological risk assessment were below the recommended values and adopted limits. It appears that the coal-fired power plant does not have a significant impact on the spatial and vertical distribution of natural radionuclides in the area of interest, but technologically enhanced natural radioactivity as a consequence of the plant operations was identified within the first 1.5 km from the power plant
Antimicrobial treatment of Corynebacterium striatum invasive infections: a systematic review
The aim of this study was to establish an evidence-based guideline for the antibiotic treatment of Corynebacterium striatum infections. Several electronic databases were systematically searched for clinical trials, observational studies or individual cases on patients of any age and gender with systemic inflammatory response syndrome, harboring C. striatum isolated from body fluids or tissues in which it is not normally present. C. striatum had to be identified as the only causative agent of the invasive infection, and its isolation from blood, body fluids or tissues had to be confirmed by one of the more advanced diagnostic methods (biochemical methods, mass spectrometry and/or gene sequencing). This systematic review included 42 studies that analyzed 85 individual cases with various invasive infections caused by C. striatum. More than one isolate of C. striatum exhibited 100% susceptibility to vancomycin, linezolid, teicoplanin, piperacillin-tazobactam, amoxicillin-clavulanate and cefuroxime. On the other hand, some strains of this bacterium showed a high degree of resistance to fluoroquinolones, to the majority majority of β-lactams, aminoglycosides, macrolides, lincosamides and cotrimoxazole. Despite the antibiotic treatment, fatal outcomes were reported in almost 20% of the patients included in this study. Gene sequencing methods should be the gold standard for the identification of C. striatum, while MALDI-TOF and the Vitek system can be used as alternative methods. Vancomycin should be used as the antibiotic of choice for the treatment of C. striatum infections, in monotherapy or in combination with piperacillin-tazobactam. Alternatively, linezolid, teicoplanin or daptomycin may be used in severe infections, while amoxicillin-clavulanate may be used to treat mild infections caused by C. striatum
Signaling via interleukin-4, receptor alpha chain is required for successful vaccination against schistosomiasis in BALB/c mice
Radiation-attenuated (RA) schistosome larvae are potent stimulators of innate immune responses at the skin site of exposure (pinna) that are likely to be important factors in the development of Th1-mediated protective immunity. In addition to causing an influx of neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells (DCs) into the dermis, RA larvae induced a cascade of chemokine and cytokine secretion following in vitro culture of pinna biopsy samples. While macrophage inflammatory protein 1 and interleukin-1 (IL-1) were produced transiently within the first few days, the Th1-promoting cytokines IL-12 and IL-18 were secreted at high levels until at least day 14. Assay of C3H/HeJ mice confirmed that IL-12 secretion was not due to lipopolysaccharide contaminants binding Toll-like receptor 4. Significantly, IL-12 p40 secretion was sustained in pinnae from vaccinated mice but not in those from nonprotected infected mice. In contrast, IL-10 was produced from both vaccinated and infected mice. This cytokine regulates IL-12-associated dermal inflammation, since in vaccinated IL-10/ mice, pinna thickness was greatly increased concurrent with elevated levels of IL-12 p40. A significant number of IL-12 p40 cells were detected as emigrants from in vitro-cultured pinnae, and most were within a population of rare large granular cells that were Ia, consistent with their being antigen-presenting cells. Labeling of IL-12 cells for CD11c, CD205, CD8, CD11b, and F4/80 indicated that the majority were myeloid DCs, although a proportion were CD11c F4/80, suggesting that macrophages were an additional source of IL-12 in the skin
