Prior work has shown a shift in stable carbon isotope values of Ictidomys tridecemlineatus incisors and fecal pellets late in the active season (Jang et al., 2012 and Chacko, 2013). The purpose of this study was to find out if the diet of I. tridecemlineatus shifts from C3 to C4 plants during the late part of the active season through direct observation of feeding activities. Observations were made at the Andrews University Airpark in SW Michigan from July to late September, 2013. Representative samples of plant and insect material fed on were collected and analyzed for stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition. We found no shift from C3 to C4 plant diet. However, there was a C13 enrichment of plant and insect material over the course of the active season

Quantum MIMO n-Systems and Conditions for Stability

In this paper we present some conditions for the (strong) stabilizability of an n-D Quantum MIMO system P(X). It contains two parts. The first part is to introduce the n-D Quantum MIMO systems where the coefficients vary in the algebra of Q-meromorphic functions. Then we introduce some conditions for the stabilizability of these systems. The second part is to show that this Quantum system has the n-D system as its quantum limit and the results for the SISO,SIMO,MISO,MIMO are obtained again as special cases.Comment: 6 page

Thermal Effects for Shaft-Pre-Stress on Rotor Dynamic System

This Paper outlines study behaviour of rotating shaft with high speed under thermal effects. The method of obtaining the frequency response functions of a rotor system with study whirl effect in this revision the raw data obtained from the experimental results (using Smart Office program) are curve-fitted by theoretical data regenerated from some of the experimental data and simulating it using finite element (ANSYS 12). (FE) models using the Eigen analysis capability were used to simulate the vibration. The results were compared with experimental data show analysis data with acceptable accuracy and performance. The rotating effect causes un-symmetry in the system matrices, resulting in complexity in decoupling the mathematical models of the system for the purpose of modal analysis. Different method is therefore required, which can handle general system matrices rather than symmetrical matrices, which is normal for passive structures. Mathematical model of the system from the test data can be assembled. The frequency response functions are extracted, Campbell diagram are draw and simulated. (FE) is used to carry out such as simulation since it has good capability for Eigen analysis and also good graphical facility. Plastic deformation mechanisms in polyimide resins and their semi-interpenetrating networks

    Get PDF
High-performance thermoset resins and composites are critical to the future growth of space, aircraft, and defense industries in the USA. However, the processing-structure-property relationships in these materials remain poorly understood. In the present ASEE/NASA Summer Research Program, the plastic deformation modes and toughening mechanisms in single-phase and multiphase thermoset resins were investigated. Both thermoplastic and thermoset polyimide resins and their interpenetrating networks (IPNs and semi-IPNs) were included. The fundamental tendency to undergo strain localization (crazing and shear banding) as opposed to a more diffuse (or homogeneous) deformation in these polymers were evaluated. Other possible toughening mechanisms in multiphase thermoset resins were also examined. The topological features of network chain configuration/conformation and the multiplicity of phase morphology in INPs and semi-IPNs provide unprecedented opportunities for studying the toughening mechanisms in multiphase thermoset polymers and their fiber composites

Tuberculosis (TB) remains an escalating health crisis globally which prompts new approaches to find more effective therapeutic strategies. Medicinal plants of Malaysia have a significant role to play in being able to provide new therapeutic remedies. The local people of Kampung Peta (Jakun tribe), Endau Rompin claimed that local preparations of some plants are used to treat symptoms of tuberculosis. There is a need to validate the claim by tradition healers scientifically. The aim of this research is to search for anti-TB from plants of Taman Negara Johor Endau-Rompin, exploiting the traditional medical practices of the Jakun people. Aqueous and organic extracts of these plant species were screened for their antimycobacterial activity using agar disk diffusion assay, Tetrazolium Microplate Assay and agar plate assay against Mycobacterium smegmatis. The effect of the extract on mycobacterial cell at the cellular level was investigated upon treatment with the crude extracts via time-kill analysis, leakage of compound absorbing at 280nm, and field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The findings revealed that methanol extract of Nepenthes ampularia displayed the largest zone of inhibition (DIZ=18.67 ± 0.58 mm). Ethyl acetate extract of Musa gracilis and hexane extract of N. ampularia exhibited the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC=0.39 mg/mL). Hexane extract of N. ampularia showed the lowest minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC= 1.56 mg/mL). At 3-fold of MIC, hexane extract of N. ampularia, ethyl acetate extract of M. gracilis and ethyl acetate extract of N. ampularia killed the entire bacterial cell within 8 h of exposure by causing the cell lysis. The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of phytoconstituents that might contribute to the antimycobacterial effect. The study scientifically justified the use of the selected medicinal plant species by Jakun people. Further studies on N. ampularia and M. gracilis could lead to the development of new anti-TB drugs
