Duality Violation and the K --> pi pi Electroweak Penguin Operator Matrix Elements from Hadronic Tau Decays

alpha_s from tau decays revisited
Being a determination at low energies, the analysis of hadronic tau decay
data provides a rather precise determination of the strong coupling alpha_s
after evolving the result to M_Z. At such a level of precision, even small
non-perturbative effects become relevant for the central value and error. While
those effects had been taken into account in the framework of the operator
product expansion, contributions going beyond it, so-called duality violations,
have previously been neglected. The following investigation fills this gap
through a finite-energy sum rule analysis of tau decay spectra from the OPAL
experiment, including duality violations and performing a consistent fit of all
appearing QCD parameters. The resulting values for alpha_s(M_tau) are 0.307(19)
in fixed-order perturbation theory and 0.322(26) in contour-improved
perturbation theory, which translates to the n_f=5 values 0.1169(25) and

Importance Of Toll-Like Receptors For B Lymphocyte Survival In Primary Sjögren’s Syndrome
The Sjögren's syndrome is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by lymphocytic infiltration of the glands responsible for mouth and eyes dryness. A minority of infiltrating B cells is organized as germinal centers while the majority is aggregated into clusters of transitional and marginal zone B cells. The Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) recognizes microbial DNA but also, sometimes, the self DNA. It appears to be a key determinant of the survival and differentiation of B lymphocytes. After laser micro-dissection of B cells from salivary glands, analyses by quantitative RT-PCR showed that transitional B cells express high level of TLR9 mRNA unlike B cells from germinal centers. B lymphocytes from healthy donors were sorted by flow cytometry and stimulated in vitro with their TLR9. It induces survival, activation and proliferation associated with phenotypic changes. Transitional B cells exhibited characteristics of the marginal zone, whereas mature B cells expressed follicular germinal center specificities. Finally, IgM and IgG were secreted by both population, but with elevated production of autoantibodies by the transitional B cells. Increased expression of TLR9 by transitional B cells suggests that they may be highly sensitive to differentiate into autoantibody secreting cells through maturation into the marginal zone into the salivary glands. TLR9 might be a target for forthcoming biotherapies. L’expression accrue de TLR9 par les lymphocytes B transitionnels suggère qu'ils pourraient être particulièrement sensibles à une différenciation en cellules sécrétrices d'auto-anticorps par une maturation vers la zone marginale au sein des glandes salivaires. A new type of CP symmetry, family replication and fermion mass hierarchies
We study a two-Higgs-doublet model with four generalised CP symmetries in the
scalar sector. Electroweak symmetry breaking leads automatically to spontaneous
breaking of two of them. We require that these four CP symmetries can be
extended from the scalar sector to the full Lagrangian and call this
requirement the principle of maximal CP invariance. The Yukawa interactions of
the fermions are severely restricted by this requirement. In particular, a
single fermion family cannot be coupled to the Higgs fields. For two fermion
families, however, this is possible. Enforcing the absence of flavour-changing
neutral currents, we find degenerate masses in both families or one family
massless and one massive. In the latter case the Lagrangian is highly
symmetric, with the mass hierarchy being generated by electroweak symmetry
breaking. Adding a third family uncoupled to the Higgs fields and thus keeping
it massless we get a model which gives a rough approximation of some features
of the fermions observed in Nature. We discuss a number of predictions of the

Duality violations in tau hadronic spectral moments
Evidence is presented for the necessity of including duality violations in a
consistent description of spectral function moments employed in the precision
determination of from decay. A physically motivated ansatz
for duality violations in the spectral functions enables us to perform fits to
spectral moments employing both pinched and unpinched weights. We describe our
analysis strategy and provide some preliminary findings. Final numerical
results await completion of an ongoing re-determination of the ALEPH covariance
matrices incorporating correlations due to the unfolding procedure which are
absent from the currently posted versions. To what extent this issue affects

Instability of the origami of a ferrofluid drop in a magnetic field
Capillary origami is the wrapping of an usual fluid drop by a planar elastic
membrane due to the interplay between capillary and elastic forces. Here, we
use a drop of magnetic fluid whose shape is known to strongly depend on an
applied magnetic field. We study the quasi-static and dynamical behaviors of
such a magnetic capillary origami. We report the observation of an overturning
instability that the origami undergoes at a critical magnetic field. This
instability is triggered by an interplay between magnetic and gravitational
energies in agreement with the theory presented here. Additional effects of
elasticity and capillarity on this instability are also discussed.Comment: in press in PRL (2011
