    "Civil defense is YOUR job!" : American civil defense programs directed towards children.

    During World War II and the Cold War, Civil Defense agencies needed to get the American people behind their programs. Civil Defense officials used new methods of informing the public while encouraging active participation. To this end, officials saw children as a sly means to improve adult education, since they would tell their parents nearly everything they learned. By teaching the children and teenagers civil defense lessons in entertaining ways, they could comprehend and regurgitate the information. The children would then encourage their parents to be a part of Civil Defense. To appeal to a younger audience, the normal rhetoric of facts on the effects of nuclear war could not be used. Instead, the government needed to find new ways of captivating youth while also instilling vital defense information. By looking at comic books, the identification tag program, Stars for Defense radio show, toys, and games, this thesis will show how the various civil defense agencies recruited the youth of America into their ranks. The literature on Civil Defense focuses on a shelter-centric approach where the programs related to bomb and fallout shelters take the lead role. The primary objective of this thesis is to highlight the programs instituted by Civil Defense officials in order to appeal to children and teenagers and add them to the larger historiography. The comics allowed students to visualize the roles of civil defense and why preparedness is important in time of war. The identification tags made children and adults feel secure knowing that important information was recorded. Stars for Defense brought music and comedy into the mix by pulling in listeners with their favorite celebrities. Finally, the toys and games put children in the literal shoes, and gas masks, of civil defense officials. These programs found new and interesting methods to accomplish the goal of educating the adult population by keeping children actively engaged in learning about Civil Defense

    MARKETING CHARACTERISTICS ASSOCIATED WITH SEAFOOD COUNTERS IN GROCERY STORES

    This study provides a benchmark analysis of seafood counter characteristics corresponding to the peaking of per capita seafood demand in the U.S. Logistic regression results show separate seafood counters are less likely in small stores, in rural stores, and in stores in low or medium income areas. Chain stores and stores with a significant number of non-white customers were more likely to have a seafood counter. Stores in the East South Central region were less likely, and stores in New England more likely, to have a seafood counter. The likelihood that stores will develop seafood counters was related to differences in sales volume, floor space, urban/rural location, income level of clients and regional location. Continuing innovations in marketing technology of seafood counters are likely to provide expanded marketing opportunities in the future.Marketing,

    Customizing the therapeutic response of signaling networks to promote antitumor responses by drug combinations

    Drug resistance, de novo and acquired, pervades cellular signaling networks (SNs) from one signaling motif to another as a result of cancer progression and/or drug intervention. This resistance is one of the key determinants of efficacy in targeted anti-cancer drug therapy. Although poorly understood, drug resistance is already being addressed in combination therapy by selecting drug targets where SN sensitivity increases due to combination components or as a result of de novo or acquired mutations. Additionally, successive drug combinations have shown low resistance potential. To promote a rational, systematic development of combination therapies, it is necessary to establish the underlying mechanisms that drive the advantages of combination therapies, and design methods to determine drug targets for combination regimens. Based on a joint systems analysis of cellular SN response and its sensitivity to drug action and oncogenic mutations, we describe an in silico method to analyze the targets of drug combinations. Our method explores mechanisms of sensitizing the SN through a combination of two drugs targeting vertical signaling pathways. We propose a paradigm of SN response customization by one drug to both maximize the effect of another drug in combination and promote a robust therapeutic response against oncogenic mutations. The method was applied to customize the response of the ErbB/PI3K/PTEN/AKT pathway by combination of drugs targeting HER2 receptors and proteins in the down-stream pathway. The results of a computational experiment showed that the modification of the SN response from hyperbolic to smooth sigmoid response by manipulation of two drugs in combination leads to greater robustness in therapeutic response against oncogenic mutations determining cancer heterogeneity. The application of this method in drug combination co-development suggests a combined evaluation of inhibition effects together with the capability of drug combinations to suppress resistance mechanisms before they become clinically manifest

    NASA Limited Inflight Lab Sensor

    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is currently developing the capabilities needed to send humans to Mars in 2030 for a three year mission. Astronaut health must be monitored monthly during such a lengthy mission. The UA Enterprise Senior Design Team worked to design a reusable, novel blood panel cartridge system to monitor astronaut health and to minimize waste production. Most current cartridges are composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). PDMS microchannels were fabricated to conduct simple proof of concept experiments for the design of a novel cartridge. To determine an ideal blood cleaning solution, bovine blood will be injected into the microchannels at a fixed flowrate and then cleaned using different reagents. The presence of blood and protein residue will then be assessed using trypan blue staining and fluorescently-tagged bovine serum albumin. In addition, a novel, reusable cartridge schematic was produced and modeled in AutoCAD and MATLAB. This design incorporated an additional inlet to allow for cleaning of the device and a novel streptavidin/biotin enzyme reservoir for reintroduction of fresh enzymes. Miniaturized analytical techniques as well as performance tests for each priority analytical method were incorporated in the final design. The proposed device shows promise for this NASA mission

    There is no doubt that in today’s practice of emergency medicine it is imperative to be familiar with how the law relates to administrative and clinical practice. It is my pleasure to announce, as section editor, the new Legal Medicine section of the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine. It is anticipated that the articles will cover a variety of areas and cases in the law. Some articles may focus on a particular disease or entity, with representative malpractice cases, and clinical caveats. Other articles may focus on legal concepts that enter the arena of emergency medicine. I have provided brief examples of each of these in this initial manuscript. Other articles could also cover original research related to law such as the standard of care in a given clinical situation or legal concepts such as consent, do-not-resuscitate, and AMA among others. I am hopeful that it will be of great interest to the readers. We welcome submissions and contributions for consideration
