Exciton-polariton behaviour in bulk and polycrystalline ZnO
We report detailed reflectance studies of the excitonāpolariton structure of thin film polycrystalline ZnO
and comparison with bulk crystal behaviour. Near-normal incidence reflectance spectra of these samples are
fitted using a two-band dielectric response function. Our data show that the reflectance data in polycrystalline
ZnO differ substantially from the bulk material, with FabryāPerot oscillations at energies below the transverse A
exciton and above the longitudinal B exciton in the films. In the strong interaction regime between these energies no
evidence is seen of the normally rapid oscillations associated with the anomalous waves. We demonstrate that the
strong interaction of the damped exciton with the photon leads to polaritons in this region with substantial damping
such that the FabryāPerot modes are eliminated. Good qualitative agreement is achieved between the model and

Association analysis of \u3ci\u3ePRNP\u3c/i\u3e gene region with chronic wasting disease in Rocky Mountain elk
Background: Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) of cervids including white-tailed (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni), and moose (Alces alces). A leucine variant at position 132 (132L) in prion protein of Rocky Mountain elk confers a long incubation time with CWD, but not complete resistance. However, variants in regulatory regions outside the open reading frame of PRNP have been associated with varying degrees of susceptibility to prion disease in other species, and some variants have been observed in similar regions of Rocky Mountain elk PRNP. Thus, additional genetic variants might provide increased protection, either alone or in combination with 132L.
Findings: This study provided genomic sequence of all exons for PRNP of Rocky Mountain elk. Many functional sites in and around the PRNP gene region were sequenced, and this report approximately doubled (to 75) the number of known variants in this region. A haplotype-tagging approach was used to reduce the number of genetic variants required to survey this variation in the PRNP gene region of 559 Rocky Mountain elk. Eight haplotypes were observed with frequencies over 1.0%, and one haplotype was present at 71.2% frequency, reflecting limited genetic diversity in the PRNP gene region.
Conclusions: The presence of 132L cut odds of CWD by more than half (Odds Ratio = 0.43; P = 0.0031), which was similar to a previous report. However after accounting for 132L, no association with CWD was found for any additional variants in the PRNP region (P \u3e 0.05)

Application of wastewater to the land has been designated a viable alternative for wastewater treatment by the Water Pollution Act Amendments of 1972 (PL 92-500). However, very little information is available concerning the long-term effects of applying wastewater to the land. The general objective of this study was to determine the long-term effects of employing secondary treated municipal wastewater as irrigation water. The study compared the quality of soils, crops, groundwater, and applied water to a site receiving normal irrigation water (control site) to a site (treated site) which had utilized seondary treated municipal effluent for irrigation water during a 20-year period. WALLABY Early Science - I. The NGC 7162 Galaxy Group
We present Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY) early
science results from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP)
observations of the NGC 7162 galaxy group. We use archival HIPASS and Australia
Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of this group to validate the new
ASKAP data and the data reduction pipeline ASKAPsoft. We detect six galaxies in
the neutral hydrogen (HI) 21-cm line, expanding the NGC 7162 group membership
from four to seven galaxies. Two of the new detections are also the first HI
detections of the dwarf galaxies, AM 2159-434 and GALEXASC J220338.65-431128.7,
for which we have measured velocities of and km s,
respectively. We confirm that there is extended HI emission around NGC 7162
possibly due to past interactions in the group as indicated by the
offset between the kinematic and morphological major axes for NGC 7162A, and
its HI richness. Taking advantage of the increased resolution (factor of
) of the ASKAP data over archival ATCA observations, we fit a tilted
ring model and use envelope tracing to determine the galaxies' rotation curves.
Using these we estimate the dynamical masses and find, as expected, high dark
matter fractions of for all group members. The

Ch. 6. Critical Systems Heuristics: The Idea and Practice of Boundary Critique
Critical systems heuristics (CSH) is a framework for reflective professional practice organised around the central tool of boundary critique. This chapter, written jointly by the original developer, Werner Ulrich, and Martin Reynolds, an experienced practitioner of CSH, offers a systematic introduction to the idea and use of boundary critique. Its core concepts are explained in detail and their use is illustrated by means of two case studies from the domain of environmental planning and management. A particular focus is on working constructively with tensions between opposing perspectives as they arise in many situations of professional intervention. These include tensions such as āsituationā versus āsystemā, āisā versus āoughtā judgements, concerns of āthose involvedā versus āthose affected but not involvedā, stakeholdersā āstakesā versus āstakeholding issuesā, and others. Accordingly, boundary critique is presented as a participatory process of unfolding and questioning boundary judgements rather than as an expert-driven process of boundary setting. The paper concludes with a discussion of some essential skills and considerations regarding the practice of boundary critique
Most Common Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms Associated With Rheumatoid Arthritis in Persons of European Ancestry Confer Risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis in African Americans
Objective. Large-scale genetic association studies have identified \u3e20 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) risk alleles among individuals of European ancestry. The influence of these risk alleles has not been comprehensively studied in African Americans. We therefore sought to examine whether these validated RA risk alleles are associated with RA risk in an African American population. Methods. Twenty-seven candidate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped in 556 autoantibody-positive African Americans with RA and 791 healthy African American control subjects. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for each SNP were compared with previously published ORs for RA patients of European ancestry. We then calculated a composite genetic risk score (GRS) for each individual based on the sum of all risk alleles. Results. Overlap of the ORs and 95% CIs between the European and African American populations was observed for 24 of the 27 candidate SNPs. Conversely, 3 of the 27 SNPs (CCR6 rs3093023, TAGAP rs394581, and TNFAIP3 rs6920220) demonstrated ORs in the opposite direction from those reported for RA patients of European ancestry. The GRS analysis indicated a small but highly significant probability that African American patients relative to control subjects were enriched for the risk alleles validated in European RA patients (P = 0.00005). Conclusion. The majority of RA risk alleles previously validated for RA patients of European ancestry showed similar ORs in our population of African Americans with RA. Furthermore, the aggregate GRS supports the hypothesis that these SNPs are risk alleles for RA in the African American population. Future large-scale genetic studies are needed to validate these risk alleles and identify novel RA risk alleles in African Americans
