Liquid Crystal Polarimetry for Metastability Exchange Optical Pumping of 3He
We detail the design and operation of a compact, discharge light polarimeter
for metastability exchange optical pumping of 3He gas near 1 torr under a low
magnetic field. The nuclear polarization of 3He can be discerned from its
electron polarization, measured via the circular polarization of 668 nm
discharge light from an RF excitation. This apparatus measures the circular
polarization of this very dim discharge light using a nematic liquid crystal
wave retarder (LCR) and a high-gain, transimpedance amplified Si photodiode. We
outline corrections required in such a measurement, and discuss contributions
to its systematic error

Mobile phones and education in sub-Saharan Africa: from youth practice to public policy
Young people’s use of mobile phones is expanding exponentially across Africa. Its transformative potential is exciting, but findings presented in this paper indicate how the downside of mobile phone use in African schools is becoming increasingly apparent. Drawing on mixed-methods field research in 24 sites across Ghana, Malawi and South Africa and associated discussions with educational institutions, public policy makers and network providers, we examine the current state of play and offer suggestions towards a more satisfactory alignment of practice and policy which promotes the more positive aspects of phone use in educational contexts and militates against more damaging ones
Modelling inhalation exposure to combustion-related air pollutants in residential buildings: Application to health impact assessment.
Buildings in developed countries are becoming increasingly airtight as a response to stricter energy efficiency requirements. At the same time, changes are occurring to the ways in which household energy is supplied, distributed and used. These changes are having important impacts on exposure to indoor air pollutants in residential buildings and present new challenges for professionals interested in assessing the effects of housing on public health. In many circumstances, models are the most appropriate way with which to examine the potential outcomes of future environmental and/or building interventions and policies. As such, there is a need to consider the current state of indoor air pollution exposure modelling. Various indoor exposure modelling techniques are available, ranging from simple statistical regression and mass-balance approaches, to more complex multizone and computational fluid dynamics tools that have correspondingly large input data requirements. This review demonstrates that there remain challenges which limit the applicability of current models to health impact assessment. However, these issues also present opportunities for better integration of indoor exposure modelling and epidemiology in the future. The final part of the review describes the application of indoor exposure models to health impact assessments, given current knowledge and data, and makes recommendations aimed at improving model predictions in the future
Motivated proteins: a web application for studying small three-dimensional protein motifs
<b>BACKGROUND:</b> Small loop-shaped motifs are common constituents of the three-dimensional structure of proteins. Typically they comprise between three and seven amino acid residues, and are defined by a combination of dihedral angles and hydrogen bonding partners. The most abundant of these are alphabeta-motifs, asx-motifs, asx-turns, beta-bulges, beta-bulge loops, beta-turns, nests, niches, Schellmann loops, ST-motifs, ST-staples and ST-turns.We have constructed a database of such motifs from a range of high-quality protein structures and built a web application as a visual interface to this. <b>DESCRIPTION:</b> The web application, Motivated Proteins, provides access to these 12 motifs (with 48 sub-categories) in a database of over 400 representative proteins. Queries can be made for specific categories or sub-categories of motif, motifs in the vicinity of ligands, motifs which include part of an enzyme active site, overlapping motifs, or motifs which include a particular amino acid sequence. Individual proteins can be specified, or, where appropriate, motifs for all proteins listed. The results of queries are presented in textual form as an (X)HTML table, and may be saved as parsable plain text or XML. Motifs can be viewed and manipulated either individually or in the context of the protein in the Jmol applet structural viewer. Cartoons of the motifs imposed on a linear representation of protein secondary structure are also provided. Summary information for the motifs is available, as are histograms of amino acid distribution, and graphs of dihedral angles at individual positions in the motifs. <b>CONCLUSION:</b> Motivated Proteins is a publicly and freely accessible web application that enables protein scientists to study small three-dimensional motifs without requiring knowledge of either Structured Query Language or the underlying database schem

Dietary patterns in India: a systematic review.
Dietary patterns analysis is an emerging area of research. Identifying distinct patterns within a large dietary survey can give a more accurate representation of what people are eating. Furthermore, it allows researchers to analyse relationships between non-communicable diseases (NCD) and complete diets rather than individual food items or nutrients. However, few such studies have been conducted in developing countries including India, where the population has a high burden of diabetes and CVD. We undertook a systematic review of published and grey literature exploring dietary patterns and relationships with diet-related NCD in India. We identified eight studies, including eleven separate models of dietary patterns. Most dietary patterns were vegetarian with a predominance of fruit, vegetables and pulses, as well as cereals; dietary patterns based on high-fat, high-sugar foods and more meat were also identified. There was large variability between regions in dietary patterns, and there was some evidence of change in diets over time, although no evidence of different diets by sex or age was found. Consumers of high-fat dietary patterns were more likely to have greater BMI, and a dietary pattern high in sweets and snacks was associated with greater risk of diabetes compared with a traditional diet high in rice and pulses, but other relationships with NCD risk factors were less clear. This review shows that dietary pattern analyses can be highly valuable in assessing variability in national diets and diet-disease relationships. However, to date, most studies in India are limited by data and methodological shortcomings
Determination of the critical current density in the d-wave superconductor YBCO under applied magnetic fields by nodal tunneling
We have studied nodal tunneling into YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) films under magnetic
fields. The films' orientation was such that the CuO2 planes were perpendicular
to the surface with the a and b axis at 450 form the normal. The magnetic field
was applied parallel to the surface and perpendicular to the CuO2 planes. The
Zero Bias Conductance Peak (ZBCP) characteristic of nodal tunneling splits
under the effect of surface currents produced by the applied fields. Measuring
this splitting under different field conditions, zero field cooled and field
cooled, reveals that these currents have different origins. By comparing the
field cooled ZBCP splitting to that taken in decreasing fields we deduce a
value of the Bean critical current superfluid velocity, and calculate a Bean
critical current density of up to 3*10^7 A/cm2 at low temperatures. This
tunneling method for the determination of critical currents under magnetic
fields has serious advantages over the conventional one, as it avoids having to
make high current contacts to the sample.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Impaired delayed but preserved immediate grasping in a neglect patient with parieto-occipital lesions
Patients with optic ataxia, a deficit in visually guided action, paradoxically improve when pantomiming an action towards memorized stimuli. Visual form agnosic patient D.F. shows the exact opposite pattern of results: although being able to grasp objects in real-time she loses grip scaling when grasping an object from memory. Here we explored the dissociation between immediate and delayed grasping in a patient (F.S.) who after a parietal-occipital stroke presented with severe left visual neglect, a loss of awareness of the contralesional side of space. Although F.S. had preserved grip scaling even in his neglected field, he was markedly impaired when asked to pretend to grasp a leftward object from memory. Critically, his deficit cannot be simply explained by the absence of continuous on-line visual feedback, as F.S. was also able to grasp leftward objects in real-time when vision was removed. We suggest that regions surrounding the parietal-occipital sulcus, typically damaged in patients with optic ataxia but spared in F.S., seem to be essential for real-time actions. On the other hand, our data indicates that regions in the ventral visual stream, damaged in D.F but intact in F.S., would appear to be necessary but not sufficient for memory-guided action
