    Long-term studies of hantavirus reservoir populations in the southwestern United States: a synthesis.

    A series of intensive, longitudinal, mark-recapture studies of hantavirus infection dynamics in reservoir populations in the southwestern United States indicates consistent patterns as well as important differences among sites and host-virus associations. All studies found a higher prevalence of infection in older (particularly male) mice; one study associated wounds with seropositivity. These findings are consistent with horizontal transmission and transmission through fighting between adult male rodents. Despite very low rodent densities at some sites, low-level hantavirus infection continued, perhaps because of persistent infection in a few long-lived rodents or periodic reintroduction of virus from neighboring populations. Prevalence of hantavirus antibody showed seasonal and multiyear patterns that suggested a delayed density-dependent relationship between prevalence and population density. Clear differences in population dynamics and patterns of infection among sites, sampling periods, and host species underscore the importance of replication and continuity of long-term reservoir studies. Nevertheless, the measurable associations between environmental variables, reservoir population density, rates of virus transmission, and prevalence of infection in host populations may improve our capacity to model processes influencing infection and predict increased risk for hantavirus transmission to humans

    Schizophrenia, narcolepsy, and HLA-DR15, DQ6

    A strong association between HLA-DR2, DQ1 and narcolepsy-cataplexy has been known since 1986. In 1990 a subdivision (HLA-DR15, DQ6) was shown to be equally associated. Narcolepsy symptoms include rapid eye movement (REM)-sleep intrusion hallucinations during the day. Some narcoleptics may be so hallucinated that they become delusional and receive a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Fifty-six inpatient schizophrenics and 56 normal controls were compared to see if there was an excess of the narcolepsy-associated antigens (NAA) among schizophrenics. Patients had frequency of the NAA 3.89 times higher than controls. After a subset was studied by night (n = 9) and day (n = 7) polysomnography, two patients were found to be true narcoleptics. Their psychosis improved with treatment for narcolepsy. When NAA(+) and NAA(-) schizophrenics were compared, the NAA(+) subgroup had significantly higher Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) scores and more hospitalizations. There were no effects attributable only to gender or race. We conclude that narcolepsy can simulate schizophrenia in some cases, and that even in nonnarcoleptic patients, the HLA-DR15, DQ6 antigens mark a group of severe schizophrenics that merits further study.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/30431/1/0000052.pd

    Project Freebird: An orbital transfer vehicle

    Freebird is a space-based orbital transfer vehicle designed to repair and deorbit orbital assets. Freebird is based at International Space Station Alpha (ISSA) at an inclination of 51.6 deg and is capable of three types of missions: crewed and teleoperated LEO missions, and extended robotic missions. In a crewed local configuration, the vehicle can visit inclinations between 30.8 deg and 72.4 deg at altitudes close to 390 km. Adding extra fuel tanks extends this range of inclination up to 84.9 deg and down to 18.3 deg. Furthermore, removing the crew module, using the vehicle in a teleoperated manner, and operating with extra fuel tanks allows missions to polar and geosynchronous orbits. To allow for mission flexibility, the vehicle was designed in a semimodular configuration. The major system components include a crew module, a 'smart box' (which contains command, communications, guidance, and navigation equipment), a propulsion pack, extra fuel tanks, and a vehicle storage facility (VSF) for storage purposes. To minimize risk as well as development time and cost, the vehicle was designed using only proven technology or technology which is expected to be flight-qualified in time for the intended launch date of 2002. And, because Freebird carries crew and operates near the space station, it must meet or exceed the NASA reliability standard of 0.994, as well as other standard requirements for such vehicles. The Freebird program was conceived and designed as a way to provide important and currently unavailable satellite repair and replacement services of a value equal to or exceeding operational costs

    Different paths to the modern state in Europe: the interaction between domestic political economy and interstate competition

    Theoretical work on state formation and capacity has focused mostly on early modern Europe and on the experience of western European states during this period. While a number of European states monopolized domestic tax collection and achieved gains in state capacity during the early modern era, for others revenues stagnated or even declined, and these variations motivated alternative hypotheses for determinants of fiscal and state capacity. In this study we test the basic hypotheses in the existing literature making use of the large date set we have compiled for all of the leading states across the continent. We find strong empirical support for two prevailing threads in the literature, arguing respectively that interstate wars and changes in economic structure towards an urbanized economy had positive fiscal impact. Regarding the main point of contention in the theoretical literature, whether it was representative or authoritarian political regimes that facilitated the gains in fiscal capacity, we do not find conclusive evidence that one performed better than the other. Instead, the empirical evidence we have gathered lends supports to the hypothesis that when under pressure of war, the fiscal performance of representative regimes was better in the more urbanized-commercial economies and the fiscal performance of authoritarian regimes was better in rural-agrarian economie

    Antiviral treatment with valacyclovir reduces virus shedding in saliva of Antarctic expeditioners

    IntroductionReactivation of herpes viruses, such as Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1), and varicella zoster virus (VZV), increases in astronauts during spaceflight, compared with their preflight and postflight levels. Reactivations can increase the risk of associated clinical conditions, such as herpes zoster, chronic neuropathic pain, vision loss, stroke, cognitive impairment, and cold sores. Furthermore, continued viral shedding for longer periods after space travel may increase the risk of viral transmission to uninfected crew contacts, including, but not limited to, the immunocompromised and newborn infants. Thus, it is essential to develop spaceflight countermeasures to prevent herpes viral reactivations to ensure the health of crewmembers and their contacts. One such countermeasure is the prophylactic administration of an antiviral drug (valacyclovir) against the alpha herpesviruses (VZV and HSV1). To determine the effectiveness of this countermeasure, we studied the shedding of EBV, VZV, and HSV1 in Antarctic expeditioners, who have similar salivary viral shedding patterns during winter-over to astronauts during long spaceflights.MethodsThe efficacy of this antiviral drug as a countermeasure was determined using three major parameters in the saliva of expeditioners during winter-over with and without administration of this drug: (i) viral load and frequency, (ii) physiological stress biomarkers [i.e., levels of cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and amylase), and (iii) immune markers (i.e., inflammatory cytokines)]. Thirty-two volunteers from two Antarctic stations (McMurdo and South Pole) participated in this study. Participants were randomly assigned to either the treatment group (valacyclovir HCl: 1 g/day) or placebo group (oyster calcium: 500mg/day). ResultsViral shedding of EBV reduced significantly (> 24-fold) in the treatment group compared with the placebo group. HSV1 was also reduced by more than fivefold, but this was not statistically significant. No VZV shedding was observed in any of the participants. In the placebo group 50% of the saliva samples had measurable viral DNA (EBV, HSV1, or both), compared with 19% of the treatment group. There was no significant change in the ratio of cortisol to DHEA or levels of alpha-amylase, indicating that physiological stress was similar between the groups. No difference was detected in levels of salivary cytokines, except IL-10, which was found in significantly lower levels in the treatment group. DiscussionThese data indicate that valacyclovir is a safe and successful intervention to reduce EBV and HSV1 shedding in individuals subjected to extreme environments and stressors
