Growth of graphene on 6H-SiC by molecular dynamics simulation
Classical molecular-dynamics simulations were carried out to study epitaxial
growth of graphene on 6H-SiC(0001) substrate. It was found that there exists a
threshold annealing temperature above which we observe formation of graphitic
structure on the substrate. To check the sensitivity of the simulation results,
we tested two empirical potentials and evaluated their reliability by the
calculated characteristics of graphene, its carbon-carbon bond-length, pair
correlation function, and binding energy.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
The Black Blood of the Tennysons: Rhetoric of Melancholy and the Imagination in Tennyson\u27s Poetry
Critics of Tennyson view his melancholy poetics as a self-evident manifestation. However, not until recently have scholars examined melancholy as a rhetorical structure in Tennyson\u27s poetry. To address this particular gap in scholarly research, this thesis examines the use of black, similar images, and descriptive language in Tennyson\u27s Mariana and the Moated Grange, Mariana in the South, and The Lady of Shalott. From a close reading of the text and a comparative analysis of Tennyson\u27s poetry, common connections between the four poems become clear. These connections emerge through the contextual evidence for melancholy existing in the imagery, diction, and syntax of Tennyson\u27s writings. Tennyson\u27s use of colors and images creates not only an atmosphere reflective of melancholia, but also manifests the melancholy effect of the restrictive Victorian gaze on the freer imaginary elements of the Romantics. This research provides a framework for identifying the traits of Tennyson\u27s melancholic rhetoric found throughout his poetry. Therefore, this framework offers a starting point for further study of the rhetorical and stylistic development of melancholy in Tennyson\u27s poetry. Additionally, by juxtaposing the obvious melancholic themes in the two Mariana poems with The Lady of Shalott, one can interpret this poem as more than a representation of the isolated poet. Thus The Lady of Shalott, when examined in tandem with The Mariana poems, affords the necessary link between the imagination and melancholy. Hence, a close examination of The Lady of Shalott illuminates the melancholy which overshadows the unbridled imaginatio

Effects of three-body interactions on the structure and thermodynamics of liquid krypton
Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations are performed to predict the
structural and thermodynamic properties of liquid krypton using a potential
energy function based on the two-body potential of Aziz and Slaman plus the
triple-dipole Axilrod-Teller (AT) potential. By varying the strength of the AT
potential we study the influence of three-body contribution beyond the
triple-dipole dispersion. It is seen that the AT potential gives an overall
good description of liquid Kr, though other contributions such as higher order
three-body dispersion and exchange terms cannot be ignored.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, LaTeX, to appear in J. Chem. Phy
On the Excess Entropy Scaling Law: a Potential Energy Landscape View
The relationship between excess entropy and diffusion is revisited by means
of large-scale computer simulation combined to supervised learning approach to
determine the excess entropy for the Lennard-Jones potential. Results reveal
that it finds its roots in the properties of the potential energy landscape
(PEL). In particular the exponential law holding in the liquid is seen to be
correlated with the landscape-influenced regime of the PEL while the fluid-like
power-law corresponds to the free diffusion regime
