    The curious compatibility of consensus, corporatism, and neoliberalism : The Finnish business community and the retasking of a corporatist welfare state

    This article addresses the apparent paradox of simultaneous neoliberal change and welfare-statist, corporatist continuity by presenting an empirical case study of the advent of neoliberal ideas in Finland in the 1970s and 1980s. The article focuses on the attempts of a free-market think tank, EVA, and the employers’ association, STK, to advance policies such as economic deregulation, international competitiveness, welfare retrenchment, and active social and labour market policies through the neoliberal retasking of the corporatist Finnish welfare state. EVA and the STK utilised seemingly non-neoliberal means, that is an economic policy consensus and tripartite corporatist arrangements, and reformulated their content to better correspond with business interests. Instead of demolition, the outcome has been the redefinition and incremental transformation of the state from a provider of welfare to a promoter of competitiveness, productivity, and employment.Peer reviewe

    Positive Atopy Patch Test Reaction to Malassezia furfur in Atopic Dermatitis Correlates with a T Helper 2-like Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells Response

    The yeast Malassezia furfur belongs to the normal cutaneous flora, but is also a triggering allergen that can contribute to atopic dermatitis. To illuminate the effect of circulating allergen-specific T cells in atopic dermatitis, the peripheral mononuclear cell response was correlated with the in vivo skin prick test and atopy patch test reactivity to M. furfur. None of 16 healthy controls showed any positive in vivo reaction. The 40 atopic dermatitis patients, of whom 18 had serum IgE reactivity to M. furfur, were subdivided according to their in vivo reaction to M. furfur extract into three groups: skin prick test positive/atopy patch test positive (n = 12), skin prick test positive/atopy patch test negative (n = 12), and skin prick test negative/atopy patch test negative (n = 16). The skin prick test positive/atopy patch test positive and the skin prick test positive/atopy patch test negative groups had a significantly higher peripheral mononuclear cell stimulation index than the healthy controls. Interestingly, the stimulation index values in the skin prick test positive/atopy patch test positive group were significantly higher than in the skin prick test positive/atopy patch test negative group. In the M. furfur skin prick test positive atopic dermatitis patients (n = 24) a correlation was found between stimulation index and the M. furfur atopy patch test reactions, but not between stimulation index and M. furfur-specific serum IgE levels. Skin prick test positive and/or atopy patch test positive reactions to the recombinant M. furfur allergens rMal f 1, rMal f 5, and rMal f 6 were observed in 7, 14, and 16 of the 40 atopic dermatitis patients, respectively. Further, there was a correlation between production of the T helper 2-related cytokines interleukins 4, 5, and 13 and stimulation index to M. furfur extract, but not between the T helper 1-related interferon-γ and stimulation index to M. furfur extract. Our data strongly suggest a relationship between circulating specific T cells with a T helper 2-like cytokine profile and positive atopy patch test reactions

    Neuroblastoma (NB), the most common extracranial cancer in childhood, exhibits neuroendocrine (NE) differentiation. Two well-established NE markers, chromogranin A (CgA) and synaptophysin (syn), are used in the histopathological diagnostics. Our aims were to explore if the NE markers synaptic vesicle protein 2 (SV2) and vesicular monoamine transporter 1 (VMAT1) and 2 (VMAT2) also are expressed in human NB and if so, evaluate their usefulness in NB histopathological diagnostics. Tumor specimens from 21 NB patients, before and/or after chemotherapy, were immunostained for CgA, syn, SV2, VMAT1, and VMAT2. Clinical data was extracted from patients' records. SV2 was highly expressed in NB, as was CgA while syn was less frequently expressed compared to the other two. Both VMATs were expressed in several NB, VMAT2 in more cases than VMAT1 and its expression was similar to syn. Chemotherapy did not affect the immunoreactivity in an obvious way. SV2 was highly expressed in NB and can thus be useful marker in NB diagnostics. VMAT1 and VMAT2 were also expressed in NB but similar to syn less reliable as tumor markers

    Chromogranin A (CgA) and neuron specific enolase (NSE) are important markers in adult neuroendocrine tumors (NET). Neuroblastoma (NB) has certain neuroendocrine properties. The aim of this study was to correlate blood concentrations of CgA, chromogranin B (CgB), and NSE to prognostic factors and outcome in children with NB. Blood samples from 92 patients with NB, 12 patients with benign ganglioneuroma (GN), 21 patients with non-NB solid tumors, 10 patients with acute leukemias, and 69 healthy children, were analyzed. CgA concentrations were higher in neonates vs. children older than one month in the control group (p < 0.0001), and in neonates with NB vs. the control group (p < 0.01). CgA and NSE concentrations were higher in patients with stages 3 and 4 disease (p < 0.05 and p < 0.05), in patients having tumors with amplification of MYCN (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001), or chromosome 1 p deletion (p < 0.05 and p < 0.05). NSE correlated to the tumor size at diagnosis (p < 0.001) and to tumor related death (p < 0.01) in NB. CgA and NSE concentrations were elevated in patients with NB and especially in those with advanced disease. Both CgA and NSE correlated to genetic markers, while only NSE correlated to primary tumor size and outcome in NB. We found that CgA and NSE are clinically valuable tumor markers in NB and they merit prospective clinical evaluations as such

    The in silico identification and characterization of a bread wheat/Triticum militinae introgression line : Characterization of alien introgression in wheat

    The capacity of the bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) genome to tolerate introgression from related genomes can be exploited for wheat improvement. A resistance to powdery mildew expressed by a derivative of the cross bread wheat cv. Tähti ⨯ T. militinae (Tm) is known to be due to the incorporation of a Tm segment into the long arm of chromosome 4A. Here, a newly developed in silico method termed RICh (rearrangement identification and characterization) has been applied to characterize the introgression. A virtual gene order, assembled using the GenomeZipper approach, was obtained for the native copy of chromosome 4A; it incorporated 570 4A DArTseq markers to produce a zipper comprising 2,132 loci. A comparison between the native and introgressed forms of the 4AL chromosome arm showed that the introgressed region is located at the distal part of the arm. The Tm segment, derived from chromosome 7G, harbors 131 homoeologs out of the 357 genes present on the corresponding region of Chinese Spring 4AL. The estimated number of Tm genes transferred along with the disease resistance gene was 169.     Four-gender systems in Indo-European

    A long-established tenet of Indo-European linguistics says that grammatical gender systems all along the history of this language phylum were maximally tripartite and generally tended toward a reduction of gender contrasts. In this article, we shall show that this widely-held idea overlooks the existence of four-gender systems in a substantial part of the Romance language family, a fact that has in turn gone unnoticed so far. We shall provide an analysis of the relevant Romance data, a sketchy comparison with other four-gender systems described in linguistic typological research, and a detailed reconstruction of how the gender systems in question might have developed in the Latin-Romance transition
