Unifying N=5 and N=6
We write the Lagrangian of the general N=5 three-dimensional superconformal
Chern-Simons theory, based on a basic Lie superalgebra, in terms of our
recently introduced N=5 three-algebras. These include N=6 and N=8
three-algebras as special cases. When we impose an antisymmetry condition on
the triple product, the supersymmetry automatically enhances, and the N=5
Lagrangian reduces to that of the well known N=6 theory, including the ABJM and
ABJ models.Comment: 19 pages. v2: Published version. Minor typos corrected, references

Global burden of human brucellosis : a systematic review of disease frequency
BACKGROUND: This report presents a systematic review of scientific literature published between 1990-2010 relating to the frequency of human brucellosis, commissioned by WHO. The objectives were to identify high quality disease incidence data to complement existing knowledge of the global disease burden and, ultimately, to contribute towards the calculation of a Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALY) estimate for brucellosis.METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Thirty three databases were searched, identifying 2,385 articles relating to human brucellosis. Based on strict screening criteria, 60 studies were selected for quality assessment, of which only 29 were of sufficient quality for data analysis. Data were only available from 15 countries in the regions of Northern Africa and Middle East, Western Europe, Central and South America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Central Asia. Half of the studies presented incidence data, six of which were longitudinal prospective studies, and half presented seroprevalence data which were converted to incidence rates. Brucellosis incidence varied widely between, and within, countries. Although study biases cannot be ruled out, demographic, occupational, and socioeconomic factors likely play a role. Aggregated data at national or regional levels do not capture these complexities of disease dynamics and, consequently, at-risk populations or areas may be overlooked. In many brucellosis-endemic countries, health systems are weak and passively-acquired official data underestimate the true disease burden.CONCLUSIONS: High quality research is essential for an accurate assessment of disease burden, particularly in Eastern Europe, the Asia-Pacific, Central and South America and Africa where data are lacking. Providing formal epidemiological and statistical training to researchers is essential for improving study quality. An integrated approach to disease surveillance involving both human health and veterinary services would allow a better understand of disease dynamics at the animal-human interface, as well as a more cost-effective utilisation of resources
<i>Plasmodium falciparum </i>var genes expressed in children with severe malaria encode CIDRα1 domains
Most severe Plasmodium falciparum infections are experienced by young children. Severe symptoms are precipitated by vascular sequestration of parasites expressing a particular subset of the polymorphic P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1) adhesion molecules. Parasites binding human endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) through the CIDRα1 domain of certain PfEMP1 were recently associated with severe malaria in children. However, it has remained unclear to which extend the EPCR‐binding CIDRα1 domains epitomize PfEMP1 expressed in severe malaria. Here, we characterized the near full‐length transcripts dominating the var transcriptome in children with severe malaria and found that the only common feature of the encoded PfEMP1 was CIDRα1 domains. Such genes were highly and dominantly expressed in both children with severe malarial anaemia and cerebral malaria. These observations support the hypothesis that the CIDRα1‐EPCR interaction is key to the pathogenesis of severe malaria and strengthen the rationale for pursuing a vaccine or adjunctive treatment aiming at inhibiting or reducing the damaging effects of this interaction
A Tunable Two-impurity Kondo system in an atomic point contact
Two magnetic atoms, one attached to the tip of a Scanning Tunneling
Microscope (STM) and one adsorbed on a metal surface, each constituting a Kondo
system, have been proposed as one of the simplest conceivable systems
potentially exhibiting quantum critical behaviour. We have succeeded in
implementing this concept experimentally for cobalt dimers clamped between an
STM tip and a gold surface. Control of the tip-sample distance with
sub-picometer resolution allows us to tune the interaction between the two
cobalt atoms with unprecedented precision. Electronic transport measurements on
this two-impurity Kondo system reveal a rich physical scenario which is
governed by a crossover from local Kondo screening to non-local singlet
formation due to antiferromagnetic coupling as a function of separation of the
cobalt atoms.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
Reduction in Fracture Rate and Back Pain and Increased Quality of Life in Postmenopausal Women Treated with Teriparatide: 18-Month Data from the European Forsteo Observational Study (EFOS)
The European Forsteo Observational Study was designed to examine the effectiveness of teriparatide in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis treated for up to 18 months in normal clinical practice in eight European countries. The incidence of clinical vertebral and nonvertebral fragility fractures, back pain, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL, EQ-5D) were assessed. Spontaneous reports of adverse events were collected. All 1,648 enrolled women were teriparatide treatment-naive, 91.0% of them had previously received other anti-osteoporosis drugs, and 72.8% completed the 18-month study. A total of 168 incident clinical fractures were sustained by 138 (8.8%) women (821 fractures/10,000 patient-years). A 47% decrease in the odds of fracture in the last 6-month period compared to the first 6-month period was observed (P < 0.005). Mean back pain VAS was reduced by 25.8 mm at end point (P < 0.001). Mean change from baseline in EQ-VAS was 13 mm by 18 months. The largest improvements were reported in the EQ-5D subdomains of usual activities and pain/discomfort. There were 365 adverse events spontaneously reported, of which 48.0% were considered related to teriparatide; adverse events were the reason for discontinuation for 79 (5.8%) patients. In conclusion, postmenopausal women with severe osteoporosis who were prescribed teriparatide in standard clinical practice had a significant reduction in the incidence of fragility fractures and a reduction in back pain over an 18-month treatment period. This was associated with a clinically significant improvement in HRQoL. Safety was consistent with current prescribing information. These results should be interpreted in the context of the open-label, noncontrolled design of the study
Isolation of Hox Cluster Genes from Insects Reveals an Accelerated Sequence Evolution Rate
Among gene families it is the Hox genes and among metazoan animals it is the insects (Hexapoda) that have attracted particular attention for studying the evolution of development. Surprisingly though, no Hox genes have been isolated from 26 out of 35 insect orders yet, and the existing sequences derive mainly from only two orders (61% from Hymenoptera and 22% from Diptera). We have designed insect specific primers and isolated 37 new partial homeobox sequences of Hox cluster genes (lab, pb, Hox3, ftz, Antp, Scr, abd-a, Abd-B, Dfd, and Ubx) from six insect orders, which are crucial to insect phylogenetics. These new gene sequences provide a first step towards comparative Hox gene studies in insects. Furthermore, comparative distance analyses of homeobox sequences reveal a correlation between gene divergence rate and species radiation success with insects showing the highest rate of homeobox sequence evolution
Feasible mitigation actions in developing countries
Energy use is not only crucial for economic development, but is also the main driver of greenhouse-gas emissions. Developing countries can reduce emissions and thrive only if economic growth is disentangled from energy-related emissions. Although possible in theory, the required energy-system transformation would impose considerable costs on developing nations. Developed countries could bear those costs fully, but policy design should avoid a possible 'climate rent curse', that is, a negative impact of financial inflows on recipients' economies. Mitigation measures could meet further resistance because of adverse distributional impacts as well as political economy reasons. Hence, drastically re-orienting development paths towards low-carbon growth in developing countries is not very realistic. Efforts should rather focus on 'feasible mitigation actions' such as fossil-fuel subsidy reform, decentralized modern energy and fuel switching in the power sector
An acoustic emission landslide early warning system for communities in low-income and middle-income countries
This is an Open Access Article. It is published by Springer under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 Unported Licence (CC BY). Full details of this licence are available at: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Early warning systems for slope instability are needed to alert users of accelerating slope deformation behaviour, enable evacuation of vulnerable people, and conduct timely repair and maintenance of critical infrastructure. Communities exposed to landslide risk in low- and middle-income countries seldom currently instrument and monitor slopes to provide a warning of instability because existing techniques are complex and prohibitively expensive. Research and field trials have demonstrated conclusively that acoustic emission (AE) monitoring can be an effective approach to detect accelerating slope movements and to subsequently communicate warnings to users. The objective of this
study was to develop and assess a simple, robust, low-cost AE monitoring system to warn of incipient landslides, which can be widely deployed and operated by communities globally to help protect vulnerable people. This paper describes a novel AE measurement sensor that has been designed and developed with the
cost constrained to a few hundred dollars (US). Results are presented from physical model experiments that demonstrate performance of the AE system in measuring accelerating deformation behaviour, with quantifiable relationships between AE and displacement rates. Exceedance of a pre-determined trigger level of AE can be used to communicate an alarm to users in order to alert them of a slope failure. Use of this EWS approach by communities worldwide would reduce the number of fatalities caused by landslides
Baseline observations from the POSSIBLE EU® study: characteristics of postmenopausal women receiving bone loss medications
Summary: Prospective Observational Scientific Study Investigating Bone Loss Experience in Europe (POSSIBLE
EU®) is an ongoing longitudinal cohort study that utilises
physician- and patient-reported measures to describe the
characteristics and management of postmenopausal women
on bone loss therapies. We report the study design and
baseline characteristics of 3,402 women recruited from
general practice across five European countries.
Purpose The POSSIBLE EU® is a study describing the
characteristics and management of postmenopausal women
receiving bone loss medications.
Methods: Between 2005 and 2008, general practitioners
enrolled postmenopausal women initiating, switching or
continuing treatment with bone loss treatment in France,
Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. Patients and physicians
completed questionnaires at study entry and at 3-month
intervals, for 1 year.
Results: Of 3,402 women enrolled (mean age 68.2 years
[SD] 9.83), 96% were diagnosed with low bone mass; 55%
of these using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Most
women (92%) had comorbidities. Mean minimum T score
(hip or spine) at diagnosis was −2.7 (SD 0.89; median −2.7
[interquartile range, −3.2, −2.2]) indicating low bone
mineral density. Almost 40% of the women had prior
fractures in adulthood, mostly non-vertebral, non-hip in
nature, 30% of whom had at least two fractures and more
than half experienced moderate/severe pain or fatigue.
Bisphosphonates were the most common type of bone loss
treatment prescribed in the 12 months preceding the study.
Conclusions POSSIBLE EU® characterises postmenopausal
women with low bone mass, exhibiting a high rate of
prevalent fracture, substantial bone fragility and overall
comorbidity burden. Clinical strategies for managing
osteoporosis in this population varied across the five
participating European countries, reflecting their different
guidelines, regulations and standards of care
