    Why NGOs matter for the success of sports events? The case of the America's Cup

    Get PDF
    Collaborations among companies and NGOs have been widely described in the literature. However, little has been said about how NGOs can become a key success factor for sports events. Palliating the uncertainties associated with consumer response, in this paper it is argued that NGO activist behavior is now a stronger antecedent of success in sporting events than consumer response. The America's Cup is used to illustrate how collaboration with NGOs can create value for all stakeholders and produce the desired outcome.Stakeholder Management; Value Creation; Sport Marketing; Sport events;

    Understanding the failure of the replication of the Chinese economic reforms in India through the study of Gujarat RIS and Karnataka REE

    India has failed to develop merchandise exports as China has. The Indian government is aware of this challenge and hence has created a specific plan for the industry called Plan 2025 to benchmark Chinese reforms. However, Plan 2025 fails to enhance the industry at this stage. This paper examines how some successful economic reforms in China did not have the desired impact in India. This paper shows that some key success factors of the Chinese experience have deliberately not been included in India ( absence of agglomeration effect with emerging neighbours, rent capture behaviour at a political level, same focus on IT & service instead of manufacturing from the SEZs, absence of upgrade to the current Chinese reforms). Still more significantly, there were policy mistakes. The Indian willingness to focus on knowledge generation for the manufacturing sector (as it has always done for IT & services) instead of on knowledge exploitation as China did, prevented India from using the backwardness advantage to obtain technology transfer and spillover to the rest of the economy. Therefore, this paper makes some recommendations for Indian policy-makers on how to improve the current flaws detected in the application of some Chinese economic reforms. As there is a need for state level analysis, the methodology consisted in comparing the past economic history and trajectories of two Indian States (Gujarat & Karnataka) with two Chinese Deltas (Yangtze River and Pearl River) using the approaches of the regional innovation systems (RIS) and the regional entrepreneurial ecosystems (REE)

    Stereoscopy's Impact on the Making of Digital Visual Effects in Films

    Get PDF
    Since Avatar (Cameron, 2009) released, almost every stereoscopic 3D (S3D) film contain digital visual effects (VFX). Assuming that stereoscopy and VFX nowadays go hand in hand, this article aims to study the impact of stereoscopy on the making of digital VFX. It will cross information with crew members' witnesses from the production of French films Amazonia (Ragobert, 2013), AstĂ©rix & ObĂ©lix (Tirard, 2012), and The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet (Jeunet, 2013). This case study-oriented approach will go through the three film production's stages: pre-production, on-set principle photography, and post-production; in order to provide an overview of changes in cinematographic techniques that occur when designing stereoscopic-VFX, as well as how cinema technicians manage to adapt their skills to make stereoscopic and visual effects cohabit in films' images.   What do you want to do ? Propagating Polaritons in III-Nitride Slab Waveguides

    Full text link
    We report on III-nitride waveguides with c-plane GaN/AlGaN quantum wells in the strong light-matter coupling regime supporting propagating polaritons. They feature a normal mode splitting as large as 60 meV at low temperatures thanks to the large overlap between the optical mode and the active region, a polariton decay length up to 100 ÎĽ\mum for photon-like polaritons and lifetime of 1-2 ps; with the latter values being essentially limited by residual absorption occurring in the waveguide. The fully lattice-matched nature of the structure allows for very low disorder and high in-plane homogeneity; an important asset for the realization of polaritonic integrated circuits that could support nonlinear polariton wavepackets up to room temperature thanks to the large exciton binding energy of 40 meV

    Planning and Learning: Path-Planning for Autonomous Vehicles, a Review of the Literature

    Full text link
    This short review aims to make the reader familiar with state-of-the-art works relating to planning, scheduling and learning. First, we study state-of-the-art planning algorithms. We give a brief introduction of neural networks. Then we explore in more detail graph neural networks, a recent variant of neural networks suited for processing graph-structured inputs. We describe briefly the concept of reinforcement learning algorithms and some approaches designed to date. Next, we study some successful approaches combining neural networks for path-planning. Lastly, we focus on temporal planning problems with uncertainty.Comment: AAAI-format & update

    Structuralisme et ethnographie

    Get PDF
    A principios de la década del setenta, varios investigadores de la tradición francesa, influenciados por la obra de Lévi-Strauss, viajaron a la Amazonia colombiana con la intención de aplicar su propuesta teórica en los trabajos etnográficos. El autor comparte su experiencia con los yukuna de Miritiparaná y reflexiona sobre las relaciones entre etnografía y estructuralismo. Mediante discusiones entre la lingüística y el estructuralismo, especialmente, emprende una búsqueda conceptual y metodológica frente a la forma de abordar la mitología yukuna, donde constata que la fuerza del mito reside en todo lo que se escapa a un análisis textual, principalmente en la oralidad, por ende, el mito es ante todo actos de palabras perfomativas e inscritas en un sistema

    Misères de la monnaie, monnaies de la misère

    Cet article traite de la faillite monétaire argentine et de son impact sur les conditions de vie des habitants d’une villa miseria (bidonville) de Buenos Aires. L’analyse des crises monétaires nous permet de poser le problème de la nature de l’organisation sociale et de la solidarité dans ces villas. Si le manque quasi absolu d’argent les oblige à développer des formes d’entre aides individuelles originales, on constate en même temps l’absence d’institutions et de formes d’organisation sociale autonomes. La pauvreté extrême (difficile à concevoir de l’extérieur) induit des formes de solidarité négative (violences, vols) jusque dans la villa. La faillite étatique actuelle est la conséquence de la nouvelle gestion économique et financière initiée durant la dictature militaire (1976-1983) et poursuivie jusqu’à nos jours.This article deals with currency failure in Argentina and its impact on life in a 'villa miseria' (shantytown) in Buenos Aires. An analysis of monetary crises allows us to pose the problem of the nature of social organisation and mutual support in these villas. Although an almost total lack of money forces individuals to develop novel forms of mutual aid, at the same time an absence of autonomous institutions and forms of social organisation can be noted. Extreme poverty (difficult to conceive from the outside) induces forms of negative solidarity (violence, theft) even in the villa itself. The current state collapse is the result of the new form of economic and financial management initiated during the military dictatorship (1976‑1983) and which has been followed ever since
