    Boundary layer stability on a yawed spinning body of revolution and its effect on the magnus force and moment

    The parameters are established which are important to the stability of a boundary layer flow over a yawed spinning cylinder in a uniform stream. It is shown that transition occurs asymmetrically in general and this asymmetry can be important for the prediction of aerodynamic forces and moments (e.g., the Magnus effect). Instability of the steady-state boundary layer flow is determined using small disturbance theory. Although the approach is strictly valid only for the calculation of the conditions for stability in the small, experimental data indicate that in many problems, it provides a good estimate for the transition to turbulence

    Status of the Pacific Mackerel resource during 1997 and management recommendations for the fishery

    Based on a California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) projected biomass estimate of 91,200 metric tons for July 1, 1997, the recommended commercial fishery quota for the 1997/98 fishing season is 22,000 metric tons. Age-specific abundance for 1996 was estimated using output from a stock assessment model called ADEPT and certain assumptions about growth and fishing mortality during the first half of 1997. In this year's assessment, abundance estimates made by ADEPT were expanded back in time to cover the 68-year period of 1929 through 1996. The commercial fishery quota recommendation is based upon the prescribed harvest formula for Pacific mackerel that is specified in the California Fish and Game Code. Several sources of information are available for the Pacific mackerel stock, all of which suggest a smaller biomass than was present in the 1980's. Landings from both California and Ensenada, Mexico have sharply decreased and catch rates from the southern California Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessel (CPFV) fleet have declined. Fishery-independent indices of abundance from aerial spotter observations and California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) ichthyoplankton surveys show similar trends. The 1997 biomass estimate is higher than last year's estimate of 47,160 metric tons because data added to the model this year increased abundance for fish of 1994 and older year classes (age 2+). This year's results indicate there were more fish in the older year classes than estimated in previous assessments. (27pp.

    Primordial black hole evolution in tensor-scalar cosmology

    A perturbative analysis shows that black holes do not remember the value of the scalar field Ï•\phi at the time they formed if Ï•\phi changes in tensor-scalar cosmology. Moreover, even when the black hole mass in the Einstein frame is approximately unaffected by the changing of Ï•\phi, in the Jordan-Fierz frame the mass increases. This mass increase requires a reanalysis of the evaporation of primordial black holes in tensor-scalar cosmology. It also implies that there could have been a significant magnification of the (Jordan-Fierz frame) mass of primordial black holes.Comment: 4 pages, revte

    On the degeneracies of the mass-squared differences for three-neutrino oscillations

    Using an algebraic formulation, we explore two well-known degeneracies involving the mass-squared differences for three-neutrino oscillations assuming CP symmetry is conserved. For vacuum oscillation, we derive the expression for the mixing angles that permit invariance under the interchange of two mass-squared differences. This symmetry is most easily expressed in terms of an ascending mass order. This can be used to reduce the parameter space by one half in the absence of the MSW effect. For oscillations in matter, we derive within our formalism the known approximate degeneracy between the standard and inverted mass hierarchies in the limit of vanishing θ13\theta_{13}. This is done with a mass ordering that permits the map Δ31↦−Δ31\Delta_{31} \mapsto -\Delta_{31}. Our techniques allow us to translate mixing angles in this mass order convention into their values for the ascending order convention. Using this dictionary, we demonstrate that the vacuum symmetry and the approximate symmetry invoked for oscillations in matter are distinctly different.Comment: 5 pages, revised manuscrip

    The problems associated with data acquisition and reduction in the U. Va. superconducting magnetic suspension and balance facility are similar to those in free-flight ranges (or tunnels). The model undergoes a quasi-six-degree-of-freedom motion which must be monitored both in position and angular orientation from which the aerodynamics must be inferred. The data acquisition problem is made more difficult because geometric constraints prevent direct visual access to the model in the Mach 3 wind tunnel. The methods, accuracies, and problems associated with the acquisition of data are discussed

    New round spore mutations in Neurospora crassa accompanying changes in a duplication closely linked to the R locus

    Various genotypes can result in round ascospores in N. crassa (Mitchell 1966 Neurospora Newsl. 10:6; Barry et al. 1972 Neurospora Newsl. 19:17). I have observed that round ascospores can also originate in crosses where one parent is the apparent breakdown of a partial diploid heterozygous at the heterokaryon incompatibility locus het-5. The breakdown may remove one of the duplicated chromosome segments carrying a het-5 allele and possibly extend past the duplication and affect the nearby Round spore locus (R)

    We introduce an algebraic framework for interacting quantum systems that enables studying complex phenomena, characterized by the coexistence and competition of various broken symmetry states of matter. The approach unveils the hidden unity behind seemingly unrelated physical phenomena, thus establishing exact connections between them. This leads to the fundamental concept of {\it universality} of physical phenomena, a general concept not restricted to the domain of critical behavior.     Effect of motion frequency spectrum on subjective comfort response

    In order to model passenger reaction to present and future aircraft environments, it is necessary to obtain data in several ways. First, of course, is the gathering of environmental and passenger reaction data on commercial aircraft flights. In addition, detailed analyses of particular aspects of human reaction to the environment are best studied in a controllable experimental situation. Thus the use of simulators, both flight and ground based, is suggested. It is shown that there is a reasonably high probability that the low frequency end of the spectrum will not be necessary for simulation purposes. That is, the fidelity of any simulation which omits the very low frequency content will not yield results which differ significantly from the real environment. In addition, there does not appear to be significant differences between the responses obtained in the airborne simulator environment versus those obtained on commercial flights

    Theoretical and experimental comparison of vapor cavitation in dynamically loaded journal bearings

    Vapor cavitation for a submerged journal bearing under dynamically loaded conditions was investigated. The observation of vapor cavitation in the laboratory was done by high-speed photography. It was found that vapor cavitation occurs when the tensile stress applied to the oil exceeded the tensile strength of the oil or the binding of the oil to the surface. The theoretical solution to the Reynolds equation is determined numerically using a moving boundary algorithm. This algorithm conserves mass throughout the computational domain including the region of cavitation and its boundaries. An alternating direction implicit (MDI) method is used to effect the time march. A rotor undergoing circular whirl was studied. Predicted cavitation behavior was analyzed by three-dimensional computer graphic movies. The formation, growth, and collapse of the bubble in response to the dynamic conditions is shown. For the same conditions of dynamic loading, the cavitation bubble was studied in the laboratory using high-speed photography
