    Navigation of the TSS-1 mission

    The Tethered Satellite System Mission was analyzed to determine its impacts on the Mission Control Center (MCC) Navigation section's ability to maintain an accurate state vector for the Space Shuttle during nominal and off-nominal flight operations. Tether dynamics expected on the Shuttle introduces new phenomena when determining the best estimation of its position and velocity. In the analysis, emphasis was placed on determining the navigation state vectors accuracies resulting when the tether induced forces were and were not modeled as an additional acceleration upon processing tracking measurements around a TSS-1 trajectory. Results of the analyses show that when the forces are not modeled in the state vector generation process, the resulting solution state reflects a solution about the center of gravity of the tethered system and not that of the orbiter. The Navigation team's ability to provide accurate state vector estimates necessary for trajectory planning are impeded. In addition to this consequent, is an impact on Onboard Navigation state vector accuracies. These analyses will show that in order to preserve an accurate state onboard the orbiter a new operational procedure would have to be adopted

    Screaming into the Ether: Assessing E-Resources Outreach through Digital Touchpoints

    What is the impact of social media, targeted email, and other intentional promotional efforts on e-resource usage? Is there a correlation between e-resources marketing and the use of those resources? What data can we gather, what can we learn, and how can this be used to improve our communications with faculty and outreach via social media and digital spaces?This presentation will explore the findings from the first year of a multi-year study on marketing e-resources at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Librarians at the William H. Hannon Library examined the usage of specific e-resources over the course of the 2016-2017 academic year, and overlaid the usage with a timeline of physical and digital promotions for the same e-resources within the communications cycle, including social media outreach, internal and external email marketing, library instruction, and LibGuides. The presenters will discuss their findings and provide step-by-step instructions for attendees who wish to replicate the process at their home institutions. The presenters will also offer timely recommendations for improving e-resources outreach based on their combined experiences as Collection Development and Outreach librarians, respectively

    Tuning a Simulated Annealing metaheuristic for cross-domain search

    Simulated Annealing is a well known local search metaheuristic used for solving computationally hard optimization problems. Cross-domain search poses a higher level issue where a single solution method is used with minor, preferably no modification for solving characteristically different optimisation problems. The performance of a metaheuristic is often dependant on its initial parameter settings, hence detecting the best configuration, i.e. parameter tuning is crucial, which becomes a further challenge for cross-domain search. In this paper, we investigate the cross-domain search performance of Simulated Annealing via tuning for solving six problems, ranging from personnel scheduling to vehicle routing under a stochastic local search framework. The empirical results show that Simulated Annealing is extremely sensitive to the initial parameter settings leading to sub-standard performance when used as a single solution method for cross-domain search. Moreover, we demonstrate that cross-domain parameter tuning is inferior to domain-level tuning highlighting the requirements for adaptive parameter configurations when dealing with cross-domain search

    A comparative study of fuzzy parameter control in a general purpose local search metaheuristic

    There is a growing number of studies on general purpose metaheuristics that are directly applicable to multiple domains. Parameter setting is a particular issue considering that many of such search methods come with a set of parameters to be configured. Fuzzy logic has been used extensively in control applications and is known for its ability to handle uncertainty. In this study, we investigate the potential of using fuzzy systems to control the parameter settings of a threshold accepting (TA) metaheuristic for improving the overall effectiveness of a cross-domain approach. We have evaluated the performance of various general purpose local search metaheuristics which mix multiple heuristics at random and apply the TA metaheuristic with fixed threshold, crisp (non-fuzzy) rule-based control of the threshold and various fuzzy systems controlling the threshold. The empirical results show that the approach using the TA with crisp rule-based control performs the best across six problem domains from a benchmark

    Fuzzy adaptive parameter control of a late acceptance hyper-heuristic

    A traditional iterative selection hyper-heuristic which manages a set of low level heuristics relies on two core components, a method for selecting a heuristic to apply at a given point, and a method to decide whether or not to accept the result of the heuristic application. In this paper, we present an initial study of a fuzzy system to control the list-size parameter of late- acceptance move acceptance method as a selection hyper-heuristic component. The performance of the fuzzy controlled selection hyper-heuristic is compared to its fixed parameter version and the best hyper-heuristic from a competition on the MAX-SAT problem domain. The results illustrate that a fuzzy control system can potentially be effective within a hyper-heuristic improving its performance

    An ordered hypergraph is a hypergraph GG whose vertex set V(G)V(G) is linearly ordered. We find the Tur\'an numbers for the rr-uniform ss-vertex tight path Ps(r)P^{(r)}_s (with vertices in the natural order) exactly when r≤s<2rr\le s < 2r and nn is even; our results imply ex>(n,Ps(r))=(1−12s−r+o(1))(nr)\mathrm{ex}_{>}(n,P^{(r)}_s)=(1-\frac{1}{2^{s-r}} + o(1))\binom{n}{r} when r\le s}(n,P^{(r)}_s) remain open. For r=3r=3, we give a construction of an rr-uniform nn-vertex hypergraph not containing Ps(r)P^{(r)}_s which we conjecture to be asymptotically extremal.Comment: 10 pages, 0 figure

    Space biology initiative program definition review. Trade study 1: Automation costs versus crew utilization

    A significant emphasis upon automation within the Space Biology Initiative hardware appears justified in order to conserve crew labor and crew training effort. Two generic forms of automation were identified: automation of data and information handling and decision making, and the automation of material handling, transfer, and processing. The use of automatic data acquisition, expert systems, robots, and machine vision will increase the volume of experiments and quality of results. The automation described may also influence efforts to miniaturize and modularize the large array of SBI hardware identified to date. The cost and benefit model developed appears to be a useful guideline for SBI equipment specifiers and designers. Additional refinements would enhance the validity of the model. Two NASA automation pilot programs, 'The Principal Investigator in a Box' and 'Rack Mounted Robots' were investigated and found to be quite appropriate for adaptation to the SBI program. There are other in-house NASA efforts that provide technology that may be appropriate for the SBI program. Important data is believed to exist in advanced medical labs throughout the U.S., Japan, and Europe. The information and data processing in medical analysis equipment is highly automated and future trends reveal continued progress in this area. However, automation of material handling and processing has progressed in a limited manner because the medical labs are not affected by the power and space constraints that Space Station medical equipment is faced with. Therefore, NASA's major emphasis in automation will require a lead effort in the automation of material handling to achieve optimal crew utilization

    Variational approach for electrolyte solutions: from dielectric interfaces to charged nanopores

    A variational theory is developed to study electrolyte solutions, composed of interacting point-like ions in a solvent, in the presence of dielectric discontinuities and charges at the boundaries. Three important and non-linear electrostatic effects induced by these interfaces are taken into account: surface charge induced electrostatic field, solvation energies due to the ionic cloud, and image charge repulsion. Our variational equations thus go beyond the mean-field theory. The influence of salt concentration, ion valency, dielectric jumps, and surface charge is studied in two geometries. i) A single neutral air-water interface with an asymmetric electrolyte. A charge separation and thus an electrostatic field gets established due to the different image charge repulsions for coions and counterions. Both charge distributions and surface tension are computed and compared to previous approximate calculations. For symmetric electrolyte solutions close to a charged surface, two zones are characterized. In the first one, with size proportional to the logarithm of the coupling parameter, strong image forces impose a total ion exclusion, while in the second zone the mean-field approach applies. ii) A symmetric electrolyte confined between two dielectric interfaces as a simple model of ion rejection from nanopores. The competition between image charge repulsion and attraction of counterions by the membrane charge is studied. For small surface charge, the counterion partition coefficient decreases with increasing pore size up to a critical pore size, contrary to neutral membranes. For larger pore sizes, the whole system behaves like a neutral pore. The prediction of the variational method is also compared with MC simulations and a good agreement is observed.Comment: This version is accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. E
