    Scenario-Based Design Theorizing:The Case of a Digital Idea Screening Cockpit

    As ever more companies encourage employees to innovate, a surplus of ideas has become reality in many organizations – often exceeding the available resources to execute them. Building on insights from a literature review and a 3-year collaboration with a banking software provider, the paper suggests a Digital Idea Screening Cockpit (DISC) to address this challenge. Following a design science research approach, it suggests a prescriptive design theory that provides practitioner-oriented guidance for implementing a DISC. The study shows that, in order to facilitate the assessment, selection, and tracking of ideas for different stakeholders, such a system needs to play a dual role: It needs to structure decision criteria and at the same be flexible to allow for creative expression. Moreover, the paper makes a case for scenario-based design theorizing by developing design knowledge via scenarios

    Virtual reality crowd simulation: effects of agent density on user experience and behaviour

    Agent-based crowd simulations are used for modelling building and space usage, allowing designers to explore hypothetical real-world scenarios, including extraordinary events such as evacuations. Existing work which engages virtual reality (VR) as a platform for crowd simulations has been primarily focussed on the validation of simulation models through observation; the use of interactions such as gaze to enhance a sense of immersion; or studies of proxemics. In this work, we extend previous studies of proxemics and examine the effects of varying crowd density on user experience and behaviour. We have created a simulation in which participants walk freely and perform a routine manual task, whilst interacting with agents controlled by a typical social force simulation model. We examine and report the effects of crowd density on both affective state and behaviour. Our results show a significant increase in negative affect with density, measured using a self-report scale. We further show significant differences in some aspects of user behaviours, using video analysis, and discuss how our results relate to VR simulation design for mixed human–agent scenarios

    Climate-sensitive health priorities in Nunatsiavut, Canada

    Background: This exploratory study used participatory methods to identify, characterize, and rank climate-sensitive health priorities in Nunatsiavut, Labrador, Canada. Methods: A mixed method study design was used and involved collecting both qualitative and quantitative data at regional, community, and individual levels. In-depth interviews with regional health representatives were conducted throughout Nunatsiavut (n = 11). In addition, three PhotoVoice workshops were held with Rigolet community members (n = 11), where participants took photos of areas, items, or concepts that expressed how climate change is impacting their health. The workshop groups shared their photographs, discussed the stories and messages behind them, and then grouped photos into re-occurring themes. Two community surveys were administered in Rigolet to capture data on observed climatic and environmental changes in the area, and perceived impacts on health, wellbeing, and lifestyles (n = 187). Results: Climate-sensitive health pathways were described in terms of inter-relationships between environmental and social determinants of Inuit health. The climate-sensitive health priorities for the region included food security, water security, mental health and wellbeing, new hazards and safety concerns, and health services and delivery. Conclusions: The results highlight several climate-sensitive health priorities that are specific to the Nunatsiavut region, and suggest approaching health research and adaptation planning from an EcoHealth perspective

    Antecedents of achievement emotions : mixed-device assessment with Italian and Australian university students

    We focused on cross-cultural comparisons on achievement emotions, as those emotions associated to learning activities or outcomes. An advantageous way to investigate them is using on-line assessment tools, enabling users to gather data in economic ways. We involved 206 Italian and Australian first-year university students, who were administered an on-line questionnaire measuring challenge and threat appraisals, two emotion regulation strategies, and ten achievement emotions. The results indicated cross-cultural differences for threat, reappraisal, positive deactivating, negative activating, and negative deactivating emotions. Path analyses showed that challenge and threat appraisals, and reappraisal and suppression strategies, coherently predicted achievement emotions, with some exceptions, invariantly across groups. These findings confirm the usefulness of using on-line assessment, and inform on cross-cultural comparisons on achievement emotions, documenting differences in their mean levels, but supporting the universality of the relationships between antecedents and subsequent emotions.9 page(s

    Effective leadership in BMP implementations: A case study of BPM in a developing country, public sector context

    Public sector organizations across the globe have shown a keen interest in adopting BPM, yet research studies have identified many obstacles impeding successful BPM outcomes. While leadership has been emphasized as critical for BPM to succeed, it is still an under-researched area in BPM. The limited discourse on BPM leadership is a-theoretical and provides few guidelines on what effective BPM leadership is. This paper views BPM leadership from a Complexity Leadership Theory (CLT) perspective and applies the Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to assist in understanding the complex social networks in leading continuous process improvement. Employing an in-depth single case, this study explores a successful BPM initiative in a Sri Lankan public-sector organization. The study results provide a rich understanding of leadership actions that support BPM success, which can be applied by practitioners to support BPM-leadership practice, and for future research investigating the role of leadership within BPM contexts

    Influence of gender norms in relation to child’s quality of care: follow-up of families of children with SCD identified through NBS in Tanzania

    Introducing newborn screening (NBS) services for sickle cell disease (SCD) in Africa has been proven to be one of the most cost-effective approach to reducing morbidity and mortality associated with this condition. In view of this evidence, efforts have been made by countries in Africa where SCD prevalence is high to pilot NBS programmes and to strengthen comprehensive care services for SCD. While it is important to reap the benefits of NBS for SCD in Africa in terms of overall quantitative measures, it is also important to understand how certain social and cultural conditions may disproportionately influence the outcomes of screening for some groups. The aim of this study was to analyse the role of gender norms before and after NBS for SCD in Tanzania, and to assess how they influence the quality of care of diagnosed children. Using qualitative methods, we did in-depth interviews with families of children with SCD identified through the NBS services and focus group sessions with nurses working in neonatal and postnatal sections of regional referral hospitals in Dar es Salaam. By analysing the experiences of both the families and nurses, we were able to provide evidence on, firstly, the gendered relations that undergird childcare and, secondly, how those relations influence the quality of care the child may potentially receive. The results emphasize the importance of studying the social implications of SCD in Africa, especially with regard to improving the quality of care for patients with SCD in the region. We propose simple interventions, including gender-conscious health education and genetic counselling, which can help to improve the community understanding of genetic diseases while also reducing gender-related inequalities related to SCD care in Africa

    The role of affordances in children’s learning performance and efficiency when using virtual manipulative mathematics touch-screen apps

    This paper focuses on understanding the role that affordances played in children’s learning performance and efficiency during clinical interviews of their interactions with mathematics apps on touch-screen devices. One hundred children, ages 3 to 8, each used six different virtual manipulative mathematics apps during 30–40-min interviews. The study used a convergent mixed methods design, in which quantitative and qualitative data were collected concurrently to answer the research questions (Creswell and Plano Clark 2011). Videos were used to capture each child’s interactions with the virtual manipulative mathematics apps, document learning performance and efficiency, and record children’s interactions with the affordances within the apps. Quantitized video data answered the research question on differences in children’s learning performance and efficiency between pre- and post-assessments. A Wilcoxon matched pairs signed-rank test was used to explore these data. Qualitative video data was used to identify affordance access by children when using each app, identifying 95 potential helping and hindering affordances among the 18 apps. The results showed that there were changes in children’s learning performance and efficiency when children accessed a helping or a hindering affordance. Helping affordances were more likely to be accessed by children who progressed between the pre- and post-assessments, and the same affordances had helping and hindering effects for different children. These results have important implications for the design of virtual manipulative mathematics learning apps
