    Towards an ecological index for tropical soil quality based on soil macrofauna

    The objective of this work was to construct a simple index based on the presence/absence of different groups of soil macrofauna to determine the ecological quality of soils. The index was tested with data from 20 sites in South and Central Tabasco, Mexico, and a positive relation between the model and the field observations was detected. The index showed that diverse agroforestry systems had the highest soil quality index (1.00), and monocrops without trees, such as pineapple, showed the lowest soil quality index (0.08). Further research is required to improve this model for natural systems that have very low earthworm biomass

    Delays in Biological Regulatory Networks

    International audienceIn this article, we propose a refinement of the modeling of genetic regulatory networks based on the approach of René Thomas. The notion of delays of activation/inhibition are added in order to specify which variable is faster affected by a change of its regulators. The formalism of linear hybrid automata is well suited to allow such refinement. We then use HyTech for two purposes: (1) to find automatically all paths from a specified initial state to another one and (2) to synthesize co nstraints on the delay parameters in order to follow any specific path

    X-Ray and Infrared Enhancement of Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 1E 2259+58

    The long term (~1.5 years) X-ray enhancement and the accompanying infrared enhancement light curves of the anomalous X-ray pulsar 1E 2259+58 following the major bursting epoch can be accounted for by the relaxation of a fall back disk that has been pushed back by a gamma-ray flare. The required burst energy estimated from the results of our model fits is low enough for such a burst to have remained below the detection limits. We find that an irradiated disk model with a low irradiation efficiency is in good agreement with both X-ray and infrared data. Non-irradiated disk models also give a good fit to the X-ray light curve, but are not consistent with the infrared data for the first week of the enhancement.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    The "quasi-stable" lipid shelled microbubble in response to consecutive ultrasound pulses

    Controlled microbubble stability upon exposure to consecutive ultrasound exposures is important for increased sensitivity in contrast enhanced ultrasound diagnostics and manipulation for localised drug release. An ultra high-speed camera operating at 13 × 10 6 frames per second is used to show that a physical instability in the encapsulating lipid shell can be promoted by ultrasound, causing loss of shell material that depends on the characteristics of the microbubble motion. This leads to well characterized disruption, and microbubbles follow an irreversible trajectory through the resonance peak, causing the evolution of specific microbubble spectral signatures. © 2012 American Institute of Physics

    Universality of Shot-Noise in Multiterminal Diffusive Conductors

    We prove the universality of shot-noise in multiterminal diffusive conductors of arbitrary shape and dimension for purely elastic scattering as well as for hot electrons. Using a Boltzmann-Langevin approach we reduce the calculation of shot-noise correlators to the solution of a diffusion equation. We show that shot-noise in multiterminal conductors is a non-local quantity and that exchange effects can occur without quantum phase coherence even at zero electron temperature.     Phase dependent current statistics in short-arm Andreev interferometer

    We calculate analytically the current statistics for a short diffusive wire between the normal reservoir and a short superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junction, at arbitrary applied voltages and temperatures. The cumulant-generating function oscillates with the phase difference ϕ\phi across the junction, approaching the normal-state value at ϕ=π\phi=\pi. At T=0 and at the applied voltage much smaller than the proximity gap Δϕ\Delta_\phi, the current noise PIP_I doubles and the third current cumulant C3C_3 is 4 times larger with respect to their values in the normal state; at eVΔϕeV \gg \Delta_\phi they acquire large excess components. At the gap edge, eV=ΔϕeV = \Delta_\phi, the effective transferred charge defined through dPI/dIdP_I/dI and dPI/dVdP_I/dV approaches 0e0e and 3e3e, respectively, which makes doubtful the interpretation of these quantities as physical elementary transferred charge. At T0T \neq 0, C3C_3 shows a non-monotonous voltage dependence with a dip near eV=ΔϕeV = \Delta_\phi.Comment: 13 pages, to be published in Proc.     Semi-classical Theory of Conductance and Noise in Open Chaotic Cavities

    Conductance and shot noise of an open cavity with diffusive boundary scattering are calculated within the Boltzmann-Langevin approach. In particular, conductance contains a non-universal geometric contribution, originating from the presence of open contacts. Subsequently, universal expressions for multi-terminal conductance and noise valid for all chaotic cavities are obtained classically basing on the fact that the distribution function in the cavity depends only on energy and using the principle of minimal correlations.Comment: 4 pages, 1 .eps figur

    Nature of nuclear rings in unbarred galaxies: NGC 7742 and NGC 7217

    We have studied the unbarred Sb galaxy with a nuclear star-forming ring, NGC 7742, by means of 2D spectroscopy, long-slit spectroscopy, and imaging, and have compared the results with the properties of another galaxy of this type, NGC 7217, which is studied by us earlier. Both galaxies have many peculiar features in common: each has two global exponential stellar disks with different scalelengths, each possesses a circumnuclear inclined gaseous disk with a radius of 300 pc, and each has a global counterrotating subsystem, gaseous one in NGC 7742 and stellar one in NGC 7217. We suggest that past minor merger is the probable cause of all these peculiarities, including appearance of the nuclear star-forming rings without global bars; the rings might be produced as resonance features by tidally induced oval distortions of the global stellar disks.Comment: Accepted to AJ, 11 PS/EPS figures (5 figures were added in color

    Exploring the Structure of Distant Galaxies with Adaptive Optics on the Keck-II Telescope

    We report on the first observation of cosmologically distant field galaxies with an high order Adaptive Optics (AO) system on an 8-10 meter class telescope. Two galaxies were observed at 1.6 microns at an angular resolution as high as 50 milliarcsec using the AO system on the Keck-II telescope. Radial profiles of both objects are consistent with those of local spiral galaxies and are decomposed into a classic exponential disk and a central bulge. A star-forming cluster or companion galaxy as well as a compact core are detected in one of the galaxies at a redshift of 0.37+/-0.05. We discuss possible explanations for the core including a small bulge, a nuclear starburst, or an active nucleus. The same galaxy shows a peak disk surface brightness that is brighter than local disks of comparable size. These observations demonstrate the power of AO to reveal details of the morphology of distant faint galaxies and to explore galaxy evolution.Comment: 5 pages, Latex, 3 figures.
